Drive Cruise Lunch
11 th March 2012

Sunny? Sunday Cruise Run
(Editorial: Is this “Classic” or not!!!!!)
Sunday morning saw rain as we left Noosa for Eumundi to meet for our trip to
Caloundra and a Ferry Cruise through the Pumicestone Passage. We were on board
with our old friends from Sydney, George & Judy in their rented Commodore with
George taking the wheel. Unfortunately it was a little too wet to carry passengers in
the Chevy’s dicky seat. We met around 30 members and visitors and left Eumundi
in the sun after a briefing by Alan Salmon with a copy of directions to our
destination. “I’ll take that, I don’t want us getting lost!” says I to Annie, and we
headed down through Yandina to Woombye with more rain at Nambour. We were
leading the way and George seemed to be determined to shake off those following.
There was no more rain as we travelled through Palmwoods, Eudlo and Mooloolah.
Then crossing the Bruce Highway and on to Caloundra. At Nicklin Way we turned
into Pelican Waters Boulevard where I had to refer to the supplied map to find our
way to the ferry. Consequently instead of reading the instructions I just followed the
sketch all the way to the Caloundra Power Boat Club (our lunch stop). After standing
around waiting for about 20 minutes wondering why everyone else hadn’t turned up
we finally realised there was no ferry terminal…. Hey wait a minute isn’t that the
ferry over there going out into the Passage with all the others on board!!! Apparently
they had a great and very informative trip with a great Morning Tea included. It was
time to look at the instructions and find out I had directed us straight past the ferry
terminal and onto our lunch destination. Oh well…… We decided to head into
Caloundra, found a coffee shop and watched the passing parade of ships in the
Pumicestone Passage until it was time to head back to the lunch spot, join the others
and face the music!!!
The rest of the afternoon was spent eating lunch, socialising and putting out on the
new club pathfinder.
President’s Report
I am pleased to announce that at the General Meeting held 14 th March 2012 we
as a Club were able to resolve vacancies on the Committee namely VP and
editor and as Acting President, I and the Committee would like to thank the
following members for putting up their hand.
Peter O’Toole was nominated and elected as Vice President and
Jay Bowden was nominated and elected as Editor.
Their photos and contact details have been added to the Committee page in this
magazine.
Anzac Day 2012 is rapidly approaching and as previously advised we have
once again been asked by the RSL Tewantin-Noosa Sub Branch to provide our
assistance in transporting invalid RSL veterans so that they may be allowed to
participate in their parade. Anyone who can assist with this please review the
flier in the magazine and contact Max Parnell.
Following on from last month, we have confirmed with the International Rally
of Queensland that this years’ stopover is in Pomona on Saturday and not
Cooroy as previous. We are endeavouring to obtain more info as to our possible
involvement in supporting the local community of Pomona during the stopover
in late May and whether something along the lines of Cooroy is acceptable.
Members who have recently visited the NBCCC Website would have noticed
subtle changes to Menu button selections and page presentations. The aim is to
make the site more user friendly and present our Club information in a clearer
manner. By the way if you are not aware, the Classic Lines magazine is
displayed on the website as is past issues.
Currently we have little or no Club Merchandise particularly in the clothing
category and this is currently being investigated. Some samples were shown at
the last Meeting and if any member, particularly the Ladies, have any
suggestions in this regard please contact myself or Peter O’Toole.
Have a look at the upcoming Social Event fliers as there is some enjoyable and
interesting outings organised.
Vale REID DOCHERTY (Member No.187)
It is with sadness that I report the passing of Reid after a hard fought bout with
lung cancer. Reid was passionate about Italian cars and had purchased an Alfa
Romeo Giulieta Cloverleaf which had only just been delivered, unfortunately
he never got to try out it’s 230 hp !
He and his wife Colleen who died some 12 months ago , also from cancer, had
an unusual Fiat Coupe that they enjoyed and used at many of our Club
functions .
Reid and Colleen had no children but maintained that their family was the
children that they had watched over as headmaster / headmistress during their
long NSW education department careers. Reid will be missed by the many
friends he has accumulated since locating to Noosa on retirement .
His funeral will be held on Friday 23 rd at Drysdale Funerals .
St Agnes' Home for the Aged
Claude, the hypnotist, declared, "I'm here to put you into a trance.
I intend to hypnotize each and every member of the audience."
The excitement was palpable as Claude withdrew a beautiful, antique watch
from his coat pocket.
"I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It's a very special
watch. It's been in my family for six generations."
He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting,
"Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch..."
The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth,
back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface.
Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch until, suddenly,
it slipped from the hypnotist's fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into a
hundred pieces.
"Crap!" said the hypnotist.
It took three days to clean up the Old Peoples' Home.
Claude was never invited back.

Front Cover Story by Ron Mills (Editor - Précised version)
I arrived in Australia in 1979 with my wife Denise and two young daughters via
a number of countries. Originally, I intended to start my own consultancy in
Sydney, but decided on Melbourne due to the proximity of the greater number
of businesses that would require my particular expertise. Bought an acre in Park
Orchards on the outskirts and built a Spanish style house complete with pool
and a four car garage. What to put in the garage besides a new Rover SD1 and
my wife's Mini Clubman? This was not too difficult to decide as I was then
approaching what might be termed as the age of male menopause. I wanted an
exotic European sports car with a soft top and one with a classic pedigree and
probably with four seats with our two young daughters in mind; also, one that
would not cost an arm and a leg.. My thoughts immediately turned to an E Type
Jaguar Roadster, but they were around $100,000, only had two seats and I could
not fit my six foot-odd frame behind the early models. Aston Martin DB5 and
DB6 models were twice the price and out of my league. I then looked at nearly
every other make of sports car from AC's to TVR's including German and
Italian makes. Only two cars seemed to fit the bill – the 450SL Mercedes
Convertible and Triumph Stag. The Triumph had proper upholstered seats that
could easily take two growing children. But what did I know about the Triumph
Stag? The styling was Italian by Giovanni Michelotti, it had a small V8 engine,
came with a detachable hard top and... and...what? I had never really looked at
one, but had heard they were famous for overheating in the UK and probably
were a damn sight worse in Australian conditions. On inspecting one or two I
discovered they were a luxury two door sports car with many good features and
Triumphs looked as though they had tried to include as many features as
possible into it, or in other words had crammed a pint into a half-pint pot; the
vehicle had a monocoque construction with fully independent suspension with
MacPherson front struts, semi-trailing arms at the rear and De Dion double
wishbones, coil springs and Koni shocks, four speed OHC 2997 cc V8 three
speed automatic or four speed manual with overdrive in third and fourth gear,
twin Zenith Stromberg carburetters and with power steering, front disc brakes
and drum rear, a soft top that could be folded down under a tonneau cover, roll
bar, detachable hard top, electric windows and a top speed of around 200 kph,
or 120 mph. I started to look for one to buy with the thoughts of stripping down
the engine in an attempt to cure the overheating that I was certain I would
encounter. I looked for nearly one year throughout all states for a manual
model. They were very difficult to find and as rare as hen's teeth and so I spoke
to Kellow Faulkner who had been the main importer in Victoria and they told
me they had imported 98 in total, but only two of them were manual – 96 were
automatic! I accepted what they told me, but I doubted most people who want a
true sports car with 'grunt' would order an automatic one. Each time one was

advertised in Victoria they disappeared within minutes then eventually, I saw a
red one advertised with the comments of 'no calls before 9.00 a.m'. I drove to
the approximate area of the address by figuring out where the suburb might be
by the telephone number (there were no mobiles to speak of in those days) and
phoned dead-on 9.00 a.m. Within ten minutes I was talking face-to-face to the
seller while his phone rang constantly with eager buyers offering to pay more
than what he was asking, but I beat them to it by waving cash under the buyers
nose and paid him what he asked. The Stag had 33,000 kms on the clock and
appeared in excellent condition. In those days I caught well over one hundredand
twenty international and domestic flights a year on business totaling around
400,000 kms and also drove or was driven near to 50,000 kms by road. A
number of times each year I drove the Stag to country Victoria, South Australia
and NSW. Petrol consumption was excellent on long hauls and the best I got
was somewhere around 40 mpg or 14 kpl even at a constant 100 kph
radius arm. I encounted some problems with the car and went through some
horror stories with motor mechanics that were beyond belief from a point of
downright anger to hysterical laughter. Fortunately somebody then told me of a
mechanic in Ringwood who knew about Pommy cars and I found him to be
excellent at servicing and repairing any make of vehicle to a point that the local
main Ford dealer took their cars to him when they could not rectify or diagnose
faults.
I have always believed in using or showing something exotic or unique rather
than storing it away or stuck on a pedestal without being used. I used the Stag
as a business car during the week and thrashed it on many weekends. This
seemed to attract 'yobs' in big V8's on the open road and nothing gave me
greater delight than letting them get within a few meters of my tailpipe at
speeds of 140+kph and flicking the car out of overdrive and sticking my foot
down on the accelerator at the same time. This produced the revs to leap around
1,500 rpm in a split-second and the speed by a further 20+ kph or so. It was
worth watching the face of the driver in the rear-view mirror because their
eyeballs nearly fell out of their head or they frantically looked around them to
see if their vehicle had stopped or their engine had blown-up. However, I
stopped that stunt after a few years due to punching a hole in my diff casing
through stripping a tooth off my differential. It was not only expensive to
replace a differential or crown wheel, but difficult to find them locally too. I
also had to act more responsibly because road laws were tightening up. The
final inducement and perhaps an omen to slow down in the Stag might have
also been due to winding up in a cemetery; quite literally! I had been travelling
at high speed when a motor cyclist came alongside me around 150 kph and
given me a casual look as though, 'is that all you can do?' and accelerated away
with a cocky and exaggerated swerve in front of me. I took off after him and did

the same around 180 kph without the swerve and frightened the living daylights
out of him. I went on to 200 kph with my foot flat down and noticed he had
backed-off considerably. I immediately slowed to within the speed limit as I
was approaching a built-up area and a battered truck carrying sand or earth. The
truck driver seemed to indicate for me to overtake or that he was turning left by
leaning out of the cab and flapping his arm in circles. Just as I drew alongside
him he turned right and I had nowhere to go except right too to avoid a
collision. Only then I realised he was turning into a driveway of a cemetery and
I had no option but to go through the gates first with my right foot firmly on the
brake. It was not the thing to do with a crowd of mourners silently waiting for a
slow hearse with bunches of flowers and then being scattered by a madman in
an open-top bright red sports car coming to a skidding halt and the profanities
of an irate truck driver ringing in their ears. They must have thought I was
Beelzebub himself and I rapidly backed out and was gone before anyone could
take my number plate or see if I really did have two horns protruding from my
head and a long red pointed tail.
The Stag has been highly reliable and survived on routine servicing and
minimal repairs for over thirty years. The only thing that has failed has been the
clock, a German one I might add and the only non-British part in the whole car,
and now done around 480,000 K's after having the engine stripped down about
20,000 K's ago and a bare metal respray. It has given me immense pleasure,
especially when towing home a neighbour's broken-down new Mercedes on
two occasions. It has been a great car, greatly admired and has now slowed
down just like its owner..
PREVIOUS MEETING Minutes of the previous General Meeting 15 th June
2011 held at the club rooms of Auto Barn Nambour displayed on the front table
in meeting room.
CORRESPONDENCE IN & OUT Nothing of note to discuss
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Bruce Chamberlain
Bruce stated that in consultation with the executive committee, he resigned
from the positions of Vice President and Editor and took on the role of
President. The executive committee supported this move. Vacancies now exist
for Vice President and Editor.
Some changes are under way for the Web site to make it better to navigate. The
home page header has been reduced for subsequent Menu penetration pages to
save page space and altered to show only the club logo.
Donations for the next six months will be put on hold due to the reduced profits
from the Classic and the Hill. There have been comments made in the past that
the club was becoming more like a service club than a car club. We are
currently consolidating some of our funds in a term deposit. Volunteers BBQ
went well, with quite a lot of food left over due to some people who said they
would attend not showing on the day. We have plans to use surplus later.
Secretary Report – Neil Cope
Neil said that we still have problems with emails due to people changing
internet provider. Could members advise the secretary or the membership
secretary when changes occur. It is planned to put a reminder in Classic Lines
as well.

Treasurers Report – Randall Jenvey
Hill & Classic down about $18,000 overall when compared to previous years
and with the reduction in Sponsors for the year the forecast will result in $3000
-- $4000 for the year. The conservative approach in previous years has paid off.
Social - Alan Salmon
The cruise on the Pumicestone Passage at Caloundra was very successful with
30 members plus friends taking part. I am currently finalising June Observation
Fun Run.
Membership – Bill Williams
No changes in membership in the past month.
Hill – Adam Krueger
Profit down on 2011 Hill, sponsorship getting harder. Sponsors need a return
on investment. As members we need to use our sponsors whenever possible,
we need to tell them that we are from the club. At the very least we should ask
for a quote. Event costs are rising at 5 -10% a year but we can’t continue to
raise entry fees to cover these costs.
Classic – Garry Bates
Garry stated that the classic needs to broaden our appeal. We need to do the
following – talk with councils and sponsors, need to organise Marque and shop
owners, need people with ideas, need to have someone involved in the classic
who is media savvy. Integration of the show into a classic weekend. Bowdens
keen to be involved on the Saturday with a visit to their shed as part of a run.
Still think that fashion is a good idea.
Sporting – Len Falknau
Morgan Park first event for the year turned out to be a great weekend. Gatton
Sprints on next weekend, club members making up 10% of the entries. A skid
pan day is planned either Lakeside or Gympie in cooler months. Bruce
suggested that they combine with Westfield club may help reduce costs.
Nominations from the floor were then called for the vacant positions. Peter
O’ Toole nominated for Vice president seconded by Lou Szekely, no other
nominations were received Peter was appointed to the position of Vice
President.
Jay Bowden nominated for Editor seconded by Alan Salmon no other
nominations were received Jay was appointed to the position of Editor.

OPEN FORUM Chaired by Bruce Chamberlain
Grayham Bickley said that in the past debrief of Hill & Classic occurred prior
to the volunteers BBQ, this allowed all those involved to have a say.
Grayham also said that having a pause from donations is also a good idea.
Garry bates said that maybe our focus for donation should be narrower than it
has in the past, for example a local person was taking part in the Endeavour
Rally last year, maybe we could have supported him.
Merchandise: Currently have nothing much in stock, Need shirts. Adam
provided some samples in two styles. They were well received by those
present.
Concessional Registration – Jay Bowden asked about the process for
concessional registration, Bruce said that the membership secretary manages
this function and people should ensure that chassis number and engine numbers
match what is shown on registration papers.
Macleans Bridge at Lakeside.. Daryl Shaw told the group that he was coordinating
the event. There will be a regularity event on Saturday with the
show on Sunday. This is a major social event with something for everyone. It
is an opportunity to look for entries for our event and we need to support the
Triumph club if we want them to support our event. There will be
approximately 1500 cars we need to get there early by 8.30am. Details in
Classic Lines.
Raffles – Bruce said that Christina Rolton had suggested that we run raffles at
some of our social events, proceeds going towards the Christmas Function.
Alan said he was in favour of it at larger functions only such as Xmas in July &
Australia Day function.
Thank You to Paul & Michelle Holter for organising venue and making their
premises Autobarn Nambour available to meeting attendees.
The next meeting of the executive will be held at the Board Room Tewantin
Noosa Golf Club Tewantin , 18 th April 5.30 pm
Sporting Results
Gatton Sprints never fails to turn on a fantastic event and this year was one of
the best with a massive showing from the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club
members with 14 members making the trip out to the salad bowl of
Queensland to compete .The event also coincided with Dave Gaines's 50th
birthday which was celebrated on the Friday night before racing started. A
huge thanks to all our members that chipped in to help with track preparation
and Max Parnell for his efforts in the scrutineers bay .Saturday we were
greeted with overcast threatening skies which luckily held off until later in the
afternoon for us to have a dry track for most of the day . Ian Marshall was the
standout setting a blistering pace with his datto 16000 running exceptionally
well. Max and Steve had a ding dong battle for times before Max pulled out a
blinder in his last run for the event and knocked a full second off his previous
run times .We had a real father and son event with both Rob Van W and Neil
Cope having their sons co driving with them for the weekend with a real
spirited competition between them . Bruce Anderson ran the Renault open
wheeler at Gatton for the first time and is getting faster and faster at each
event which was no mean feat when you consider how much concrete was
about. Darryl Shaw once again had a huge smile on his face as the big Jag
went really well and is a really reliable well presented race car, Dags you
should be proud of it! Despite the rain we all had a fantastic time and look
forward to our next events at McLean’s Bridge and Oakey Street Sprints.
Racing in New Zealand by
Jim Waugh
Member Jim Waugh has recently
returned from New Zealand where
he with his Formula Vee and a few
other Aussies tried their luck in
Historic racing at three circuits in
the South island. After arriving in
Christchurch 17 th Jan he toured
some of the island’s touristy
locations and saw first hand
Christchurch where the main city
centre is barricaded off and most of
the buildings are being demolished,
excavators with hydraulic jack
hammers working until late as
twilight exists in the South Island

.
Other destinations as part of a bus trip included Omarama, onto Dunedin, the Taieri
Gorge Steam Train plus a trip around town and a visit to the steepest street in the
world and at night the Haggis ceremony. Dunedin to Lake Manapoare to Le Anau , a
trip to Milford Sound and a large boat trip to the ocean. Le Anau to Queenstown,
doing jet boating at Shotover and the Shipers Canyon 4 w drive and jet boating as well
with a ride in the Gondola and an evening meal at the homestead – Walter Peaker
Station which only has access by the steam ship TSS Carnslaw. Queenstown to Haast
Pass to Fox Flacier with a helicopter flight over the Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph
Glacier and an Ice landing. Up to Gleymouth with the Tranz Alpine Train and beach
to Christchurch. A wonderful trip the bus driver was excellent with driving and
commentaryOther places visited were Hanmer Springs then onto the west coast and
up to Nelson and onto Picton for boating on the Marlborough Sound, did the mail run
and another 2 hour trip around the sound. Captain Cook liked the place so much he
visited 5 times. Back down the east coast to Kaikaura then west back to Hanmer
Springs for Quad biking, 18 holes of golf and a go in the thermal pools.
Down to Christchurch to start the first of 3 race meetings in 3 weeks. Rapoona is fairly
long with 14 corners. Alan, Don and he had to race against F2 cars with wings and
slicks and with some 80 KPH speed differential on the straights. Common sense
prevailed and they were shifted to vintage and specials where they were able to pass a
few cars in the other four races.
Down to Timaru where we had 9 races all short and Alan and he were in with the
Formula Juniors plus a few specials. Track had 10 corners with the faster cars having
to brake before the finish line to make turn one which made for close racing. Then onto
Invercargill to look at Bert Munroe’s old bikes and membrobilia at a hardware store in
the main street. We could only get accommodation at Riverton nearly 50km from the
track because a big farming show was on at the same time as our racing. It’s a power
circuit so most races he was at the wrong end of the field. Formula Juniors are not that
reliable as axles and other things break so you can pass them that way. Fred Sayers in
the Mini suffered a few paint scrapes on Sundays’ first race he spun in front of another
car and got hit on the back wheel, bending the suspension, so missed out on the last 2
races.
All in all a great trip with enjoyable motor racing to boot and they will looking to
compete again in NZ next January at the Beny Houlm Festival, North Island and
others are welcome. See Jim Waugh for details.
