Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2004Baptism of the LordYears ago on a summer camping trip at a national park, oneof the rangers stopped by to tell us a few stories about adventureand nature's power. No story captured our attention, though, like the one he shared about himself. He had been aWall street lawyer who gave it all up to start life anew. Many of us felt a twinge of envy and even a bit of hope.Jesus comes from an obscure background to take centerstage in God's Plan of Salvation. His stories and messagecapture His audience as they hear a new teaching authority -clear, inviting, and filled with persuasive power. In the perfectsetting of Heaven, in the perfect company of the saints, the perfect story is that God loves us, forgives us, and callsus to Himself. It is God who sends Jesus, anoints Him asMessiah, and embraces Him as Son. Jesus' new beginning ismarked by the Father's acknowledgment that on Jesus Hisfavor rests.Witnessing the baptism of an adult inspires faith. The baptismof a child inspires hope. The baptism of Jesus inspireslove. This fundamental sacrament initiates a marvelous newbeginning, a perfect journey of faith that takes us ever closerto God's love. It brings us new life, a new start, a sense ofhope with the knowledge that we share in God's favor.P lease pray for the sick of our parish....Father Damian AduguSanta AgnelloRudolph AsanovichDoris AurelioMaxine BellamyTom BernackiCorinne BjelichAgnes BlocherEdward BonchikMichael BostonAlvina BrazinaKristina BrentStephany BurneyMary BuroshDorothy CampbellCarol CarolloMary “Pat” CaseyJacqueline MorrowChristianSarah CondesVincent CorselloMike CurtainMarian DaleCecilia FaryJohn FetzkoElizabeth FollmerJohn FordePhyllis GarberDarla GarciaAndrea GarritanoJoseph GasiorekJames GaskeyDoris GeorgasDorothy GillespieGrace GrantMarguerite GrothouseVirginia HaleAmy HayesVirginia HenderlongEvelyn HennesIrene HollandBetty HoltRay HumpferElisha JachnaElizabeth JacobMarian JohnsonJoseph JustynskiDebbie KaczkaMadeline KentJanet KnightGertrude KocalPeter KlobucharAnn KrizmisHelen KrullJulia KuktaJerome KulaLois KusJanice LeuserMaria LovellGregory MahoneyKathryn McBrideFaye MenySandi MerloOlga MihaloClarence MillerVernon MillerWilliam ModrockRobert MudroncikRay MuellerEmily MysliwyJean NarvidJohn NarvidSteven NowaczykMarcella PaluchKathy ParkerMarciala PerezGertrude PetersJohanna PetruchElizabeth PilonesSylvester PorrasWilliam RetseckBernice RybickiTony SaklaczynskiAnn SardellaMary SarnowskiBetty SchwoeglerMary Ann SejdaGrace SheridanWallace SkiergeJoseph M. THE PASTOR’S PAGE January 11, 2004What a great plan God has in storefor us!On this feast of the Baptism of theLord, we are reminded — as Jesussaid to John the Baptist in responseto John’s statement that it was Jesuswho should be baptizing John and notthe other way around — it is best todo what God wills. What is God’s will? That question has been asked sincethe beginning of recorded time.God expects much from His people. He wants us to loveHim and to love each other as much as He loves us. Hewants us to go out of our way to help one another, rather thanto use one another to get our own way. He wants us to beproponents of peace and justice in a world that is moreaccustomed to pressure and violence. In short, God wants us to be like His Son.That is a rather tall order. And yet, with God’s help, nothingis ever impossible. On this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we recall our ownbaptisms. By being baptized in the name of Jesus, our soulswere cleansed from the stain of original sin and we wereplaced on the way to the Kingdom. Each day becomes a struggle to live up to the call of ourbaptism. My prayer for you is that, by renewing yourbaptismal promises at Mass this weekend, you may be filledwith grace and peace so that you may embrace and achieveGod’s will for your life.As for me, I will be celebrating the Baptism of the Lord, literally, on the water. I am beginning the second week of myvacation by taking a Disney cruise on the Disney Magic. Thisis the first time I have had the opportunity to take their cruiseto the Caribbean. As I pray with the faithful aboard the ship (if they do nothave Mass scheduled, I will offer to celebrate Mass for thoseon board), I will remember my parish family at St. ThomasMore in my prayers. Please keep me in your prayers and restassured that I will keep you in mine. I will see you again atMasses next Sunday, January 18th.God bless you and yours!WHAT DO YOU WANT, OUR BLOOD?Of course!Donating blood is a noble thing. Not only is it one of the more self-less things that we cando, but it also gives life to others in many ways. The gift of our blood does not take an incredible amountof time. There is not an incredible amount of pain involved. We are not going to be crippled for days. And yet, in that little bit of time that we take, we can givehope, if not life itself, to many people. This time of the year is always the worst for blood banks. With the snows of winter and the icy driving conditions, there are often more accidents in which the victims needblood.Sadly, while this time of year often sees an increase inthe need for blood, we often do not see an increase in thegift of blood. You can change all ofthat by donating blood inthe Blood of the MartyrsBlood Drive taking placehere on Sunday, January18th.ON THE LIGHTER SIDEThe little son of a Baptist minister was in church onemorning when he saw for the first time the rite of baptismby immersion. He was greatly interested in it, and the nextmorning proceeded to baptize his three cats in the bathtub. The first kitten bore it very well, and so did the young cat,but the old family cat rebelled. It struggled, clawed and toreat him, and got away. With considerable effort he caught it again andproceeded with the ceremony. But she acted worse thanever, clawed at him, spit, and scratched his hands andface. Finally, after barely getting her splattered with water, hedropped her on the floor in disgust and said: "Fine, be anAtheist."Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for anumber of years now. Others have served in the territory thatis now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men whohave been called to God and whose anniversaries of deathare this week:January 11: Rev. Ambrose E. Switzer (1967)Rev. George A. Masley (1969)January 12: Rev. Henry J. Ameling (1970)Rev. Joseph A. Buczyna (1976)January 14: Rev. George J. Naudzius (1963)Msgr. Alvin J. Jasinski (1969)Page 5

Maybe it was in school, maybe itwas with a close friend or your brotheror sister. Do you remember runningas fast as you could with somebodygaining on you? We are asking you for a “little bit” on your part that wouldmean a great deal to the parish. If you want a record of your 2003 contributions to the parish for tax purposes, kindly place a self-addressed, stamped envelope in the collection basket and we will get one out to youimmediately. The cost of an envelope and stamp may not seem like a lot, but it certainly adds up on our end.If you would rather not put a stamped, self-addressed envelope in the collection basket, you may call theparish office and request that a statement be sent out to you.As always, thank you for your help!Page 6
