Saxophonist Steve Eisen began: “I wasworking around town by 1972 and thedesire to play different styles of musicgot me working pretty quickly and isreally why I work so much now.“I played flute first and was a fluteperformance major in college. But Idecided I wanted to play saxophonewhile I was there _ just thought I wouldplay as many kinds of music as I wasable to and sat in with anyone andeveryone I could. Most people were verynice about that. I was lucky to get insome pretty high profile work situationsat a young age and built on that.“In 1974 I was playing at the Wise Foolsand (band leader) Dave Remingtonwalked in, heard me playing, thenremembered Sonny Seals could notwork the next night and thought, thisguy sounds pretty good. I’ll see if hewants to sub for Sonny. Well, Sonnyended up taking some kind of steadywithin three weeks and I had the job.I was 20 years old _ it was incredible!Through the connections I made there, Istarted getting calls for jingle work frompeople like (producer) Dick Reynolds.I started playing with Ears around thattime, too, and knowing those guys iswhat started my career and how I mademost of my income in the jingle businessfrom the time I was 22 until about 2001.I was just in the right place at the righttime.“I met more guys in the jazz community, then in folk, R & B, blues and Latinmusic, especially, ‘cause that was a lotof the first work I did when I was young– - playing in Latin bands. (HOW DIDYOU GET INTO LATIN BANDS?)I had friends at New Trier West, someCuban guys, Isidro Perez (still in town asa working drummer) and his cousin, AlCriado. Their family was a knownBy Ruth Marion Tobiasmusical entity in Cuba before therevolution. I learned a lot just hanging attheir house. They started forming bandswhen we were in school and peopleheard me when we opened for largerbands and thought my reading waspretty good. If your reading was goodand you were willing to work for really, really horrible pay, that’s what they werelooking for.(YOU DON’T PLAY CLARINET?) No,just saxophone and flute. I never tookup clarinet. I play horribly but I didactually get hired a few years ago. I gota session call from a jingle house to playclarinet and I said, I told you people amillion times I can’t really play clarinet,I’m horrible! And they said we know, that’s why we are calling you. Theywanted me to play the part of a 5thgrade clarinet player in a jingle. Theyhad already called a couple of CSOplayers, great players trying to soundbad; I didn’t _ just put a reed on, put itin my mouth and in 5 minutes they hadexactly what they were looking for. Onlyjob I ever had on clarinet and they hiredme specifically because I was horrible!(LAUGHTER HERE, A FUN INTERVIEW).After a discussion of the current demiseof the jingle business, Steve remarked,“I had it really good for a long, longtime. Now that I am older and the jingleindustry is gone, it’s back to the way itwas when I was 21, so I play in a lot ofbands.”The significant thing is that Stevewas immersed in music from earlychildhood. His mother was arecreational, classical musician whoplayed piano and classical guitar; hisfather an amateur singer. “They werehuge fans of music _ classical andbebop,” Steve said, “and there was tonsof jazz, but they were fans of folk music, too and my father was into Bob Dylanwhen he first came out, the Beatles,Aretha Franklin, too. When I was aboutsix, my mother told me I was going toplay an instrument.”(Here’s their Q &A period: So what doyou want to play? Drums. No, too loud.Trumpet? No, still too loud! I think you’llplay flute.)“So, on my seventh birthday I got myfirst flute. A year before that however,I took music theory and recorderlessons. My mom was very serious andwanted me to read music before I gotmy instrument, so I already knew howto read and sight sing. I just had toassociate pitches with fingerings. Thathad a lot to do with how I learned toimprovise.“When I would be practicing baroqueetudes and things, my mother would bein the kitchen and was a good enoughmusician to know when I made amistake and would yell at me to startover. After a while I just got boredplaying this stuff so I started making upmy own etudes in the same style and Iknew if she didn’t yell at me I had reallyfooled her. It was really fun and that wasmy first experience with improvisation, trying to fool my mom. (MORELAUGHTER). By eighth grade I wasenjoying music a lot. Besides orchestra,I was starting to play rock & roll and alot of instruments.”The next chapter began with New TrierWest High School. “With all the differentensembles and the facilities they had, ifyou liked to play there weren’t enoughhours in the day to do everythingbetween orchestra and symphonic bandand jazz band and all kinds of combothings, and rehearsing after school. Thenwhen I went to Indiana University as aflute performance major, I got a chanceto play jazz with a lot of young reallyexceptional guys. It turned me aroundto be a freelance saxophone player ofdifferent kinds of music rather than anorchestral flute player.”(SAXOPHONE PLAYER?) “Yeah, I gotmy first saxophone in the middle ofmy junior year in high school. I playedin the jazz band when they needed aflute, but I told the director I wanted toplay saxophone. Since the first tenor saxplayer’s family was moving after thatsemester, they took a chance with me.Another interest was drums, particularlyin Latin style _ conga drums and timbales, because about 60% of the time I amnot playing the horn on each tune andI thought it would be cool to be part ofthe rhythm section. Also knowing moreinstruments makes you a more valuableplayer.”These formative school years were thewellspring of his later career and thoseof his friends as well. “I still work witha lot of those close high school friends;Eric Hochberg (best friends since wewere thirteen), Arnie Roth, ChuckSchwartz, Scott Rosenthal, Issie Perez,Bill Pollack, Peter Ballin, Brian Ripp..The Paramount Theatre opened their Second Season with the musical Grease, running fromSeptember 12th through October 7th. The band included (in order from front seat to back, left to right) Kevin Kizer, Peter Ballin, Michael Keefe, Bob Lizik, Scott Reed,Scott Tipping and Tim Mulvenna.“A frequent employer is Jim Peterik _fantastic to work for, very productiveand efficient, never any guesswork. He’sbeen a rock star for years, the leader of“Ides of March”, still a very famous band(dating back to the ‘60s) that I play with.He has several bands. I play in three ofthem.“Another good friend is Orbert Davis.Playing with his unique ensemble,Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra,is another favorite thing. I play flutein the woodwinds section with anoccasional saxophone solo. I’m hiredon most all his recording projects andwhen he writes for PBS documentaries Iam included in that—such high qualitywork.”And his list of successes would notbe complete without mention ofhis prominence in the Latin jazzbands Chévere de Chicago andJames Sander’s Conjunto. That’swhere we discovered him.6 Intermezzo November/December 2012November/December 2012 Intermezzo 7
