Letters of Anton Chekhov to His Family and Friends with biographical sketchThe girl of the merchant class is admirably drawn. That is a goodpassage in the doctor’s speech in which he speaks of his lack of faithin medicine, but there is no need to make him drink after everysentence ….Then from the particular to the general! Let me warn you. This isnot a story and not a novel and not a work of art, but a long row ofheavy, gloomy barrack buildings. Where is your construction whichat first so enchanted your humble servant? Where is the lightness, the freshness, the grace? Read your story through: a description of adinner, then a description of passing ladies and girls, then a descriptionof a company, then a description of a dinner, … and so onendlessly. Descriptions and descriptions and no action at all. Youought to begin straight away with the merchant’s daughter, and keepto her, and chuck out Verotchka and the Greek girls and all the rest, except the doctor and the merchant family.Excuse this long letter.268
