Wood Receives GoldenApple AwardTimothy Wood (’85) of Seattle, Wash., was named one of eightrecipients of the Golden Apple Award for teachers in Washington State.Wood was awarded the Golden Apple for his work as the program directorat Waskowitz Environmental Leadership & Service Programs in HighlineSchool District.Wood was originally hired by Highline School District to start a summeradventure-based education program for disenfranchised youth. Sincethen, he has created year-round experiential learning programs that havetransformed the lives of many students throughout the greater Seattlearea. Through the full-time Environmental Leadership Semester Program, high school students develop leadership skills and learn how to mentorelementary school students in learning about the environment. The full-time Community Service and Work Training Programemphasizes outdoor challenge, academic study, the exploration of careeroptions, and extensive work on environmental service projects in thecommunity. In the programs, choice, self-discovery and responsibilitybecome the ingredients for a dynamic and meaningful learning experiencewith lifelong significance. Students enrolled in the programs becomeexcited about learning, because each school day brings somethingdifferent, performing a play about the dynamics of forest ecology in anelementary school, building a nature trail in the woods, collecting researchdata on water quality, or typing an essay in a school computer lab.The Golden Apple Awards, sponsored by KCTS and PEMCOInsurance, honors outstanding individuals and programs making adramatic difference in Washington state education in grades pre-K through12. This year represents a significant milestone, as it marks the 10 thanniversary of the Golden Apple Awards.
