Issue 1 Week 1A 3rd February 2012 For internal circulation onlyAISM NEWSLETTERThe Fortnightly Community Newsletter of the Australian International School MalaysiaMain Senior Middle Junior Performing Arts Sports Others Parent Assoc.Principals’ MessageDear ParentsWelcome back to the 2012 school year. We hopethat your journey with us this year is rewarding andsuccessful. After a session with home room teachers and a briefwhole school assembly on the first day of term, learning started in earnest. Walking around theschool this week we have found a sense of quietpurpose throughout the classrooms, which indicates astrong work ethic and a focused approach to teachingand learning.A major undertaking for AISM this year will be in thearea of curriculum development. Many parents wouldbe aware that Australia is in the process of developinga National Curriculum to replace the current individualstate approaches. Each state is in various stagesof development and implementation. While somestates are trialing the new curriculum, NSW haswisely decided to take more time to develop robustprograms and to use the learning from other states toensure that we implement the National Curriculum ina thoughtful and sustainable manner. Thus, the work we will do at the school this year willbe to review and develop our programs to incorporatethe more generic aspects of the National Curriculum. We will be mapping the current inclusion of theseaspects and will be gradually incorporating them intoour programs where they are not already evident. The areas of focus are Cross Curricular Priorities andGeneral Competencies:Under the banner of Cross Curricular Priorities thereare three themes, which are very much aligned withour direction as an International School in South EastAsia. These are Indigenous History and Culture,Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia andSustainability. As a school we have already made acommitment to enhancing the way we explore theconcept of Internationalism and Globalisation in ourcurriculum in order to live our vision of “educatingour students to take their productive places in theglobal community”. Thus the curriculum content willnaturally align well with the objectives of the NationalCurriculum.General Competencies cover such aspects as literacyand numeracy across all subjects, information andcommunication technology competence, critical andcreative thinking, ethical behaviour, personal andsocial competence and intercultural understanding.Whilst our curriculum currently includes all of theseaspects to a greater or lesser degree, we will beexamining our approach to teaching these conceptsin a very coherent and holistic manner. Studentsachieving these competencies will be in possessionof all the tools they need to explore, extend and excelin every area of their learning. The end result of our work will be a fully documented, streamlined curriculum that moves us close to theNational Curriculum Framework and has seamlesstransitions from one stage to the next, alongwith a clear set of learning outcomes that aremeasurable and included in our reporting process. This curriculum will be fully implemented in 2013,with some inclusions during 2012. It will also providethe groundwork for implementation of the NationalCurriculum in 2014.David Kilpatrick, PrincipalWendy Gardiner, Assistant PrincipalDiary(Note that sports events diary can be found on page 6of this newsletter and also on our webpage under SchoolCalendar & Events)Monday, 6th February 2012• Public Holiday Replacement, Prophet Muhammad’sBirthdayTuesday, 7th February 2012• Public Holiday, ThaipusamThursday, 9th February 2012• High Achievers Assembly, 2.10pm, AuditoriumWednesday, 15th February 2012• Team Building DayFriday, 17th February 2012• Parent Association Meeting, 9.15am, D2 classroom- New members welcomedSaturday, 18th February 2012• Junior School Choir CampAustralian International School Malaysia, No 22, Jalan Anggerik, The Mines Resort City, 43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.Phone: (603) 8943 0622, Fax: (603) 8948 4522, Email: admin@aism.edu.my, Website: www.aism.edu.my3rd February 2012 Page 1© 2011 Australian International School Malaysia

Main Senior Middle Junior Performing Arts Sports Others Parent Assoc.Senior School NewsWelcome BackSchool has started back in full swing with studentsgetting back in to their studies on day one. Of coursethe start of each year allows us to look at our goalsfor the year and, more importantly, what we aregoing to do to achieve those goals.HSC results and ATAR scoresAt the end of last year I reported briefly on ourexcellent HSC results. Since then our 2012 graduateshave received the Australian Tertiary AssessmentRanks (ATARS). These scores allow direct access intoAustralian Tertiary institutions but are also recognisedaround the world. As the name implies, the ranks compares students’results and places them on a 100 point scale. (Thehighest possible ATAR is actually 99.95). AISM2012 graduates’ average ATAR was 70.80 with thehighest score being 96.25. What this means is thatthe choices our graduates have for Tertiary courses isextensive. Whilst we are still trying to contact severalgraduates, we have heard of students heading toUSA, Canada, UK and of course most States andTerritories of Australia.Camps programmeMiddle and Senior Schools’ (and some Junior School)camps go away in Week 9 of term. (26th-30th April). The Camp programme is very much an integralpart of our offering here at AISM. Not only is it avehicle for strengthening and building inter-studentfriendships and relationships with teachers but alsothere are personal challenges and service learningactivities incorporated into the camps. This year the Senior School camps will go to Borneo(Year 9), Vietnam (Year 10), Phuket (Year 11). My name is ChrisBroadbent and I am originally from the UK. I have beenteaching at ASIM for six years and have been running thecareers’ program here for five years. My role at the school is fairly varied, but one of the mostimportant aspects of my job is to assist students andparents with careers’ pathways, university applicationsand planning for their next step after they have left AISM.Planning for the future can be very stressful and demandingfor families, and the range of choices available to studentscan be bewildering.I am a strong advocate of a quality of the Australianeducation system, and by choosing AISM, your child isassured of world-class qualifications that will enable theirentry to any major university or institution in the world. Lastyear we had students apply to wide range of universitiesin America, Europe, Asia and Australia. We support eachstudent as they make their plans for the future. Please watch this space for future information andinitiatives that will be occurring throughout the year. In themeantime, if you have any questions regarding careers, university applications and pathways, please email me atchrisbroadbent@aism.edu.my.Warm regards,Chris Broadbent,Careers and Pathways CoordinatorStudent Well-beingIt is with great excitement that my family and I have movedto Malaysia from Hobart, Tasmania for me to take up theposition of school psychologist with AISM this year.I have previously worked in schools and the health sectorin Tasmania and New South Wales for the past 21 years, with children, adolescents and their families. I particularlylove my work in schools due to its varied nature andthe opportunities it provides to meet, work and developmeaningful relationships with all ages.I see my role in schools primarily as one of support anddevelopment. Helping students to acquire and master skillsthat will assist them make decisions and enable them tomaximise their potential: personally, academically and asmembers of our global society; recognising the importanceof family and assisting parents to support their children asthey grow and develop into mature and responsible youngadults; working with staff to develop understanding ofindividual needs and how to best meet these needs in aschool setting.I use a number of approaches in my work to help achievethis end, including individual counselling, small group work, testing and assessment of cognitive and personality factorsas well as involvement in a broader educative approachacross the sub-schools.I look forward to working with the enthusiastic staff andstudents at AISM and welcome contact from students andtheir families.Mrs Annabelle Woods, School CounsellorPage 2 3rd February 2012

Main Senior Middle Junior Performing Arts Sports Others Parent Assoc.Junior School NewsThis week we have welcomed more than forty newstudents to the Junior School and I must say thatit has been a very smooth beginning of a new yearin a new school for these students. I hope that allof you had a rewarding and restful break and fromwhat I have observed everyone has been happyfor the resumption of the school year. Of course atthe beginning of the school year there is alway theprospect of some children having trouble settlinginto their new class and if this is the case in yourfamily, I would encourage you to make contactwith the class teacher to have a chat about whatmight be troubling your child.Everyone should have received a timetable and aterm overview by now outlining the term aheadand please contact the class teacher if you haveany questions about this. You will have noticed achange in our assembly time. The Junior Schoolassemblies will now take place on Friday period 6Week A. This change has happened as a result ofthe fantastic progress of the new building and ourmusic classes needing to use the auditorium as ateaching and learning space. At the end of last year the teachers in the JuniorSchool felt the ‘spot on’ system of acknowledgingpositive student behaviour in the school needed tobe reexamined. We are in the process of developinga new system and will have information to you inthe very near future. We are hoping to move to asystem that is more focussed on civic responsibilityand intrinsic motivation to do the right thing in theschool, rather than the previous extrinsic rewardsystem.I look forward to a positive year ahead and Iencourage you to keep up the great level ofcommunication and to contact the class teachersor myself if you have any questions or concernsabout your child’s progress in the Junior School.Damian Baynes, Head of Junior SchoolInformation Resource CentreNewsWelcome back to our library for 2012. Also make sure thatthey:• Get enough sleep (establish a reasonable bedtime so thatthey’ll be well-rested and ready to learn in the morning)• Eat a healthy breakfast (they’re more alert and do better inschool if they eat a good breakfast every day)• Make sure that they bring healthy snacks to school andnot sugar filled snacks that not only rot teeth but offer nonutritional value to the growing body.Although it’s normal to be anxious in any new situation, a fewkids develop real physical symptoms, such as headaches orstomachaches, associated with the start of school. If you’reconcerned that your child’s worries go beyond the normalback-to-school jitters, speak with your child’s doctor, schoolnurse, teacher, or school counselor. Is your child too sick for school? If your child has any of thesesymptoms please do not send your child to school .This isimportant in Kindergarten and Prep class where they arealways touching their face and mouth-thus spreading germswhich make other students sick in class, not forgetting theteacher.• High fever-above 37.4• Persistent cough with a runny nose• Lethargic, loss of appetite• Body ache with high feverAs there are some students at AISM who have a peanut/nut allergy we ask that you do not bring snacks or foodthat contains nuts to the school.Children with nutallergies can become very sick and in severe caseswill need to be hospitalized. Please make sure all yourhousehold members aware of this when they are makingup the packed food for school.Denise Miller, IRC CoordinatorDenise MacFarlane, School NursePage 4 3rd February 2012

This has resulted in a decision to organize our sports so that team training occurs inSemester long seasons. As such sports wont be continuous all year and will provide our students with variousopportunities to try different sports and compete in different carnivals. This approach over the next few years willcontinue to develop through the middle and junior schools in cooperation with the other international schools. In line with this we are starting in 2012 the Junior Saturday morning soccer program.Below is a table showing the seasons.TERM 1 TERM 2 TERM 3 TERM 4Junior School Soccer Junior School Soccer U12/U14 Rugby U12/U14 RugbySenior RugbyISAC RugbySenior TouchISAC TouchAthletics U14/U16/Open Netball U14/U16/Open Netball AthleticsISAC Softball Senior Volleyball ISAC Volleyball Senior SoftballISAC Badminton Senior Soccer ISAC Soccer Senior BadmintonMiddle School Basketball U13/15 Soccer U13/15 SoccerBarracudas Swimming Barracudas Swimming Barracudas Swimming Barracudas SwimmingTriathlon Triathlon Triathlon TriathlonSenior BasketballISAC & MS BasketballPhil Wilkins, Sports CoordinatorPage 8 3rd February 2012
