PresidentRay Hom; VP/Secretary Angela Rennie;Laina Sullivan, Marilyn Donan, DianaPearson, Judi Hartwick, Gary Goodman,Randy Heaviside, Robert Prendergast,Wayne Bayliss,Al FullerFITNESS with NICOLAN e w t o n ' s S e c o n d L a w o fAcceleration and why understandingit can prevent injuries! When I trainclients, I am constantly repeating theimportance on isolation exercises tonot use momentum. The goal is to slowlyisolate a specific muscle and not engagethe surrounding muscles. It is very important that youknow what muscle you are supposed to be workingand how to engage it; however, not “cheating” is alsovery important for injury protection. From more of ascientific view, I am talking about Newton's second lawof acceleration that states that the force acting on abody moving in a given direction is equal to the body'smass multiplied by the body's acceleration. So why isthis “law” important for injury prevention. Well, if you“cheat” by initiating a movement with momentum froma body part other than the one you are focusing on, themomentum of the moving weight may be greater thanthe muscle's ability to decelerate and stop it. The“stopping muscles” may not be strong enough tomatch the force involved and this exposes ligaments, muscles, and the joints to over-stress and injury. Forexample, if you do a bicep curl and use your back tohelp get the weight up, the bicep may not be strongenough to control the motion to lower your armtherefore damaging the bicep. I know this a little moretechnical than my usual articles, but over the years, Ihave learned that sometimes different instructors canmean the same thing but just have a different way ofdescribing the method. Sometimes just that smalldifference creates an “ah-ha” moment ofunderstanding. So this description may work for you.Moral of the story: use good form and not momentum.I look forward to seeing you in the gym! 310 210 7052."You Either Worked Out Today ...
