Forms I-151 <strong>and</strong> I-551 are issued <strong>to</strong> aliens who have been grantedpermanent resident status in the United States. They retain this statuswhile in this country. The bearer is required <strong>to</strong> have this card in his/her possession at all times.The first ALIEN REGISTRATION RECEIPT CARD, Form I-151,was introduced in 1946. Through 18 years of various revisions, itremained primarily green in color, causing it <strong>to</strong> become knownas a “Green Card.” This term is still used commonly, although thecards have not been green since 1959. The I-151 cards containedno expiration date <strong>and</strong> were only required <strong>to</strong> be renewed if therecipient was under the age of 14 at the time of issuance or if thecard was lost or s<strong>to</strong>len. As of March 20, 1996, the Form I-151 is nolonger acceptable as evidence of permanent residence.8Form I-151
