The PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD, Form I-551, was introducedin December 1997. Noticeable differences on the front of the cardinclude a change of card title from RESIDENT ALIEN CARD toPERMANENT RESIDENT CARD, a three-line machine readable zoneand the addition of a hologram.Form I-551 (1997)ReverseThe optical memory stripe on the reverse contains encodedcardholder information as well as a personalized etching whichdepicts the bearer’s photo, name, signature, date of birth, alienregistration number, card expiration date and card number.11
The current version of the PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD, FormI-551, was introduced in November 2004. It retains many of thesame features of the previous version while updating the design.The card now shows the DHS seal and contains a more detailedhologram on the front of the card.Form I-551 (2004)ReverseThe optical memory stripe on the reverse retains the same featuresas the previous card version. The stripe contains encoded cardholderinformation on the card bearer.
