Calculation Of Calorific Value Of MSWThe first step in the processing of a waste is to determine its calorific content or heating value. This is a measureof the temperature and the oxygen requirements that the specific waste will be placed on the system [8]. The calorific valueof a fuel can be determined either from their chemical analysis or in the laboratory [9]. In the laboratory Bomb Calorimeteris used. The analysis of some sample of wastes from the Energy Centre, UNN using Bomb Calorimeter are shown inTable 5Table 5 Calculation of Calorific value of the fuel using Bomb CalorimeterPaper product Wood waste Plastics waste Textile wasteSample wt.,m,=1.060g Sample wt.,m,=0.974g Sample wt.,m,=1.023g Sample wt.,m,=1.065gInitial Temp.= 29 .9860 CFinal Temp.= 31 .0090 CInitial Temp.= 29 .9330 CFinal Temp.= 30 .9810 CInitial Temp.= 28 .7430 CFinal Temp.= 30 .4570 CInitial Temp.= 29 .0150 CFinal Temp. =030 .695 CT1.0230CT 1 .0480 CT 1 .7140 CT 1 .680 CCUnburnt= 2.5+3.0=5.5Burnt= 10 - 5.5 = 4.5Unburnt= 1.3+2.2=3.5Burnt= 10 - 3.5 = 6.5Unburnt= 1.6+2.7=4.3Burnt= 10 - 4.3 = 5.7Unburnt= 2.5+0.8=3.3Burnt= 10 - 3.3 = 6.7 4.5*2.310.35 6.5*2.314.95 5.7*2.313.11 6.7*2.315.41V 2.3V 2. 5V 3. 9V 3. 8E 13039.308 E 13039. 308 E 13039. 308 E 13039. 308CV p ( ET V)/ m CV w ( ET V)/ m CV p ( ET V)/ m CV p ( ET V)/ mCV P 12572.22J/ g CV w 14012.05J/ g CV P 21833.26J/ g CV P 20551..01J/ g= 12572.22KJ/kg = 14012.05KJ/kg = 21833.26KJ/kg = 20551.01KJ/kg(SOURCE; National Centre For Energy Research & Developmen t (NCERD), UNN.)For chemical analysis, using Dulong’s formula, percentage by mass was considered and heat of combustion of Carbon,Oxygen and Hydrogen determined as shown in Table 6Table 6 Heat of combustion for C, S and HCombustionC+O 2 →CO 2S + O 2 → SO 2H 2 + 1 2 O 2 → H 2 OHeat of Combustion8075kcal/kg2220kcal/kg34500kcal/kg(Source: P.Chattopadhyay, 2006)Issn 2250-3005(online) November| 2012 Page 14
