Leaving Care BrokerageBrokerage is flexible support funding for care leavers, both for those transitioning from state careand those young people up to 21 years who need financial support subsequent to <strong>the</strong>ir leaving statecare.Whilst brokerage is usually accessed via a young person’s leaving care worker or post care supportworker, all regions have given and undertaking to support any young person who may come <strong>the</strong>irway regardless of region of origin.Young people can use financial help for:• Accommodation costs associated with setting up or maintaining your accommodation• Education/training/employment - so that you can successfully complete training or education• Access to health and community services that are not supported by MedicareFor quick or emergency funding <strong>the</strong> limit is $500. For non urgent matters, <strong>the</strong>re is not a limit withinreason.The total brokerage budget is $1.7 million per annum. There is no cap on <strong>the</strong> number of times ayoung person may apply for brokerage ei<strong>the</strong>r duringtransition or post care, however it will depend on needand/or budget availability.Leaving Care Helpline - 1300 532 846A helpline for young people aged 16-21 years who areleaving, or have left out of home care in Victoria. TheLeaving Care Helpline is open from 10am-8pmweekdays, and 10am-6pm weekends and publicholidays; and can refer young people to services in <strong>the</strong>irarea and to specialist Leaving Care Support Programs.The leaving care hotline is for all 8 regions and is basedin <strong>the</strong> city of Melbourne.It is anticipated that 1200 contacts will be made peryear to <strong>the</strong> hotline.Things that matter ChecklistCREATE in partnership with DHS worked with young people to develop <strong>the</strong> Things That MatterChecklist for young people leaving care, covering <strong>the</strong> top 10 things young people in Victoria wantedto know about leaving care50
