EXPENDABLE PROFILING SYSTEMSXBT / XSVEXPENDABLE BATHYTHERMOGRAPH / EXPENDABLE SOUND VELOCIMETERSippican expendableprofiling systems offer antisubmarinewarfare (ASW) specialists andoceanographers a fast, accurate, costeffective means of collectingenvironmental data without restricting ship operation.GENERAL SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONA standard XBT/XSV system consists of anexpendable probe, a data processing/recording system, and a launcher. An electrical connection between theprobe and the processor/recorder is made when thecanister containing the probe is placed within thelauncher and the launcher breech door is closed.Following launch, wire dereels from the probe as itdescends vertically through the water. Simultaneously, wire dereels from a spool within the probe canister, compensating for any movement of the ship andallowing theprobe tofreefall fromthe seasurface unaffected by ship motion or sea state. The XBT/XSV system uses a sea water ground. Assoon as an electrode within the nose of theexpendable probe makes contact with the water, thecircuit is complete and temperature or sound velocitydata can be telemetered to the ship-board dataprocessing equipment. Data are recorded anddisplayed in real time as the probe falls. The nose of each expendable probe is precisionweightedand the unit spin-stabilized to assure apredictable rate of descent. From this rate of descent, probe depth is determined to an accuracy of ±2%.When the probe reaches its rated depth (a functionof ship speed and the quantity of wire containedwithin the shipboard spool) the profile is completedand the system is ready for another launch.

EXPENDABLE BATHYTHERMOGRAPH (XBT)Temperature profiles and computed sound velocity dataobtained by the Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) areused by ASW operators to identify the impactof temperature on sonar propagation andacoustic range prediction. The XBT alsoprovides a quick and inexpensive means ofcollecting temperature data for oceanographicand geophysical studies. The XBT contains a precision thermistorlocated in the nose of the probe. Changes inwater temperature are recorded by changesin the resistance of the thermistor as theXBT falls through the water. The XBT iscapable of temperature accuracies of ±0.1ºC.The XBT has proved to be reliable in over 30years of use. During this time, Sippican has developedseveral variations of the standard probe to meet therequirements of a wide range of applications.EXPENDABLE SOUND VELOCIMETER (XSV)Sippican also offers an Expendable Sound Velocimeter(XSV) for the direct measurement of sound velocity. The XSV obtains accurate sound velocity profiles forthe support of ASW operations, mine counter-measureoperations and oceanographic research. The XSV measures the speed of sound in water usinga sing around sound velocity sensor. The XSV obtainsreal time sound velocity data accurate to ±0.25meters/second at depths up to 2000 meters. The XSV can significantly increase the accuracy ofsonar propagation and acoustic range predictions, improve the accuracy of acoustic positioning systemsand provide data for the study of acoustic propagationin the world's oceans. The XSV is most useful in such areasas Arctic, Mediterranean and coastal waters where highsalinity variability may cause computed sound velocity data, based upon temperature profiles and assumed salinity data,to be inaccurate. Both the XBT and XSV are available in air-launched andsub-launched configurations.EXPENDABLE BATHYTHERMOGRAPH (XBT)APPLICATIONS MAXIMUM RATED SHIP VERTICALDEPTH SPEED* RESOLUTIONT-4 Standard probe used by the 460 m 30 knots 65 cmUS Navy for ASW operations1500 ftT-5 Deep ocean scientific 1830 m 6 knots 65 cmand military applications6000 ftFast Deep Provides maximum depth capabilities at 1000 m 20 knots 65 cmthe highest possible ship speed of any XBT 3280 ftT-6 Oceanographic 460 m 15 knots 65 cmapplications1500 ftT-7 Increased depth for improved sonar prediction 760 m 15 knots 65 cmin ASW and other military applications 2500 ftDeep Blue Increased launch speed for 760 m 20 knots 65 cmoceanographic and naval applications 2500 ftT-10 Commercial fisheries 200 m 10 knots 65 cmapplications660 ftT-11 High resolution for US Navy 460 m 6 knots 18 cm(Fine Structure) mine countermeasures and 1500 ftphysical oceanographic applicationsEXPENDABLE SOUND VELOCIMETER (XSV)APPLICATIONS MAXIMUM RATED SHIP VERTICALDEPTH SPEED* RESOLUTIONXSV-01 ASW application where salinity varies; Naval and 850 m 15 knots 32 cmcivilian oceanographic and acoustic applications 2790 ftXSV-02 Increased depth for improved ASW operation 2000 m 8 knots 32 cmwhere salinity varies; Naval and civilian 6560 ftoceanographic and acoustic applicationsXSV-03 High resolution data for improved mine 850 m 5 knots 10 cmcounter-measures and ASW operations in 2790 ftshallow water; geophysical survey work;commercial oil industry supportLAUNCHERSSippican launchers are available in threemodels. Each is compatible with all XBTs,XSVs and shipboard data processing systems.LM-2A DECK-MOUNTEDThe LM-2A is easilyinstalled on the deckof any vessel.LM-3A HAND-HELDProvides portability, allows more flexibilityin selecting launcherposition and reducesinterference with otherequipment.LM-4A THRU-HULLThe standard launcherfor all military vessels.Employs the samebasic assembly as theLM-2A, however, theLM-4A is installedbelow deck forimproved safety and increased convenienceunder heavy weather conditions.System depth accuracy: 4.6 meters or 2% of depth; whichever is larger (for XSV).*All probes may be used at speeds above rated maximum, however there will be a proportional reduction in depth capability. All probes are shipped 12 to a case which is constructed of weather-resistant biodegradable material. Shipping weight varies from 25 lbs. to43 lbs. depending on probe type. Dimensions of the case vary from 17" X 14" X 18" (2.3 cu. ft.) to 17" X 14" X 19" (2.6 cu. ft.).SEA-AIR SYSTEMS DIVISION7 Barnabas Road, Marion, MA 02738 TEL (508) 748-1160 FAX (508) 748-3626 EMAIL sea_air@sippican.com www.sippican.com1719SI 10 02
