Upper Secondary Teacher Guide11.5 Response to StimuliThis unit is to be taught for 6–8 weeks.Suggested activitiesA range of activities can be used to support students to learn the content ofthis unit. Some are identified and elaborated below.• conduct experiments to investigate responses of plants to light, gravityand water stimuli in the environment• set up controlled experiments to investigate the effect of:− thyroxin on the metamorphosis of tadpoles− gibberelic acid on the growth of dwarf plants• conduct simple experiments to show that stimuli are received byreceptors and that responses are made by effectors• research the composition and function of nervous systems• demonstrate through simple exercises voluntary and involuntary reflexes• research the composition and function of the endocrine system• compare the differences between the nervous and endocrine systemsElaboration of contentThe following table gives elaboration of some activities from the list above.ActivityCarry out experiments toinvestigate tropism inplantsResearch the compositionand function of nervoussystemElaborationStudents are provided with various materials and equipment.
