Teaching Critical Communication SkillsHELP! I Can’t WAIT to Ask for a BREAK… and More!Learn how to teach the 9 skills that lead to increased independence and decreased inappropriatebehaviors for all learners regardless of communicative modality.Individuals with complex communication needs must master certain critical communication skillsif they are to function independently in the home, community, school and/or vocational setting. This training discusses how to teach critical expressive communication skills (requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, acceptance and rejection) and critical receptive communicationsskills (waiting, following directions, schedule following and transitions between activities). Criticalexpressive communication skills are skills individuals need to convey important messages to others. These skills are crucial because if a person cannot calmly and effectively communicate wants andneeds, contextually inappropriate behaviors may be demonstrated. Critical receptive communicationskills relate to a person’s ability to understand important messages from others. Failure to understandsuch messages may be distressing and/or dangerous for the individual. This one day training focuses on why these nine skills are the highest priority for teaching and how weteach them. Strategies covered are relevant for anyone with complex communication needs, regardlessof their communication modality (PECS, speech, sign, SGD). Teaching Critical Communication Skillsis a must for anyone working and/or living with people with complex communication needs.Registration time: 7:30 AM - 8:00 AMAgenda: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PMProfessional or Parent $195Register for both a PECS Level 1 Training and Teaching Critical Communication Skills and save onregistration fees! Do you need help selecting a deviceand/or preparing your learner for the transition? This training will help get your questions answered! With the current influx of communication devices and apps to the market, how do we ensure thatbasic functional communication skills are maintained and taught right from the beginning? SpeechGenerating Devices (SGDs) were first introduced for people with motor difficulties. The use of thesedevices have now expanded and are being introduced to learners with autism and other relatedcommunication difficulties. For these populations, language and cognition are often compromisedand basic social and communication skills have not always been mastered prior to the introductionof a device. Because of this, the way we teach the use of SGDs needs to be specifically tailored tofit the needs of each individual paying attention to devices capabilities vs. user capabilities. This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analyzing a learner’s current PECS skills todetermine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles ofcommunication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved.*Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) to the training for use during a variety of activitiesto receive the full experience.Registration time: 8:00 AM - 8:30 AMTopics Covered Include:• Review of the PECS Protocol• The unique challenges of learners withComplex Communication Needs• Procedures for analyzing current PECS skills• Determining candidacy for transitioningfrom PECS to an SGDTransitioning From PECS to SGDs dates and locationsCALIFORNIASacramento - March 15, 2014ILLINOISChicago - March 13, 2014MASSACHUSETTSBoston - March 11, 2014NEW for 2014!Agenda: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PMProfessional or Parent $150Register for multiple one day workshops and save!
