2General InformationSzeged – a University Townby the River TiszaSzeged – a traditional university town with 30,000students – is located 175 km south of Budapest.Szeged is conveniently accessible from Budapestby a 2.5-hour Intercity train journey. The secondbiggest river in Hungary, the Tisza provides abeautiful setting for the Hungarian “City of Sunshine”.The University of Szeged is 430 years old1581–2011Before the 12 th century, intellectual and scholarlylife concentrated in the monasteries. With thegrowing professionalisation of society in the 12 thand 13 th centuries, the demand increased for educatedprofessionals. Universities appeared in Europefrom the 11 th –12 th century. The end of theMiddle Ages signalled the arrival of modern universitieswhere teaching and research met.In 1581, following the establishment of universitiesin other regions of Central and Eastern Europe,István Báthory, the Prince of Transylvania, issued the founding document for a higher educationalinstitute in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca). TheJesuit Academy (Societatis Jesu Academia Claudiopolitana)was organized with two faculties, theFaculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Theology. The academy was meant to have the rank of auniversity from the beginning. Prince Báthoryendowed the institute with the right to conferbaccalaureate and master’s degrees on its students. At that time the university held a uniqueplace in the intellectual life of Hungary; it was theonly institute for higher education in Hungary. The academy was soon closed due to religiousand political turmoil, but in the 17 th century theJesuits re-established it and the institute gainedmore stability and prestige. From 1753, according to a decree passed bythe Holy Roman Empress and Queen of Hungaryand Bohemia, Maria Theresia, the institute functionedas a university, where teaching was carriedout in German. The Empress was one of themost significant proponents of enlightened absolutism;her educational reforms were highly lauded. The year 1774 saw not only the introductionof mandatory education but also the start ofchanges for the University of Kolozsvár. After theSociety of Jesus had been abolished, Maria Theresiaentrusted the Piarists with the reorganizationof the institute. As a result of the restructuring– in addition to the Faculties of Theology andArts – two new faculties were established, theFaculty of Law (1774) and the Faculty of Medicine-Surgery(1775).Later on these faculties served as the basis forthe Hungarian Royal University of Kolozsvár,which was founded by King Francis Joseph I andthe Hungarian Parliament in 1872. In 1881, theuniversity was renamed after the king and borehis name until 1940.In 1919, the university had to leave its foundingplace and after a brief stay in Budapest, foundnew home in Szeged. From 1921 until 1940 theFerenc József Tudományegyetem (Francis JosephUniversity) gained more and more prestige. Whenin 1940 the university was divided and part of itmoved back to Kolozsvár, the remaining staff andstudents, the laboratories and the library werereorganized. The university took the name of MiklósHorthy, who was a former Governor of Hungary. The first rector of this institute was AlbertSzent-Györgyi, who received the most prestigiousaward of sciences in 1937, the Nobel Prize, for hisresearch conducted at the university.
