tyre safety:It’s easy to take your tyres for granted. Out of sight formuch of the time, they can also slip out of mind. But tyresare crucial to your driving safety – they’re the sole pointof contact between your car and the road surface – so itdoesn’t pay to take chances with them.Just like your car’s oil and water, you should check your tyreson a regular basis, at least once a fortnight. And not just tosee if they’ve worn through to the canvas yet! You need tocheck if the pressures are right, that there are no obvioussigns of damage to the sidewalls or tread, and that the valvesand valve caps are in good condition.We’ve compiled this brief but vital guide to looking after thehealth of your tyres. There may seem to be a lot to checkover, but in reality it shouldn’t take you more than a fewminutes. And what’s a few minutes when your life, and that ofyour family, could be at stake.Tyre pressures...A tyre doesn’t have to look flat to be under-inflated, socheck its pressure at least once every couple of weeks. Ifyou can, buy a digital pressure gauge from your local caraccessories store. You’ll find what pressures your car needsin its handbook – if in doubt, ask your local Toyo stockist forhelp. Pressures will vary depending on how fast you driveand what sort of load you carry in your car, for instance extraluggage load when you’re setting off on a family holiday.Remember that pressures should only be checked when yourtyres are cold – give them an hour or so to cool down.Tread depthThe deeper the tread your tyres have, the more grip they’llgive, especially in the wet. So although the government’sminimum legal tread depth limit is 1.6mm (in the maingrooves in the central three-quarters of the tyre), it makessense to replace your tyres before they get that low.If you’re uncertain how to measure the tread depth, have aword with your friendly local Toyo stockist. Another way tocheck how your tyres are wearing is to look for the TreadWear Indicators.These are the lateral raised rubber strips in the bottom of thetread grooves – when the main tread is atthe same level as these, then you’ve reached thelegal minimum.Not only is it daft to ignore the minimum tyre tread depth, it’sillegal; you can be fined up to £2500 for each defective tyreand receive three penalty points for each of them, too. Don’tgamble with your life or your bank balance.Uneven tyre wear and its causesLook at the tread on your tyre. Is it evenly worn right acrossits width? If not, it could be due to under-inflation or overinflation,which we’ve already covered. However, if it’s wornonly around one edge, particularly on the front tyres, it maybe because of poor wheel alignment or other mechanicalproblems.Have a professional garage check out your car’s wheelalignment and suspension; if there’s a problem with either ofthese you should have them fixed immediately.Wheel balancingAn unbalanced wheel can literally shake your car to bits andcause serious mechanical damage, not to mention beingextremely annoying. Reputable tyre dealers will balance yourwheels as a matter of course when they replace your tyres,but it never hurts to ask if they’ve done it. Also make surethey replace the tyre valves and refit the protective dust caps.Don’t forget your spare!You may never use it, but always ensure your spareis properly inflated and in good condition. A problem is betterdiscovered in the safety and comfort of your driveway, ratherthan by the side of a rain-lashed motorway....and why they need to be rightDriving with under-inflated or over-inflated tyres will affectthe way your car rides, steers, handles and brakes; it couldbecome very unstable and difficult to drive.
