countrytalkVersatile lorries make lighter work of feed deliveryIn a bid to keep transport costs down andensure reliable delivery of bagged feed forlivestock, Countrywide Farmers (CWF)is introducing changes to the way it makesdeliveries to farms. From October, CWF bagged feed will betransported to a regular timetable, gettingdeliveries into specific geographic areas onset days of the week. Two days of the weekwill be allocated for each area, guaranteeingregular, staggered delivery dates. To achieve this improved, competitive serviceCWF will be working with its partner BOCMPauls in sharing transport resources andeffectively carrying out deliveries for eachother whenever it makes sense to do so.The new system will also see feed delivereddirectly from mill to farm – taking out the costsincurred by getting the product to a warehousebefore it can be sent on to the customer.“We see these changes as simply a sensibleway of delivering competitively priced feedswith a high level of service,” said CWF’sAlistair Folly.“Keeping costs down and service quality upis the key but with all lorries in both fleetscarrying nearer-to-capacity loads, we’ll alsosave on food miles and so help theenvironment,” he added.Frankly, a huge successBreeding to produce well-balanced animals Group for the Burke at the 2002 Royal Show.with top conformation selected for easy This year Balbithon heifers won two Breedcalving and temperament has proved a Championships and Reserve Interbreed atwinner at shows and in the commercial the Bath & West and Royal Cornwall Shows.market for a Dorset Charolais herd. Most of the herd’s top cattle are soldThe Balbithon pedigree Charolais herd is through Carlisle and Perth, regularlyowned by Mr and Mrs A White of Compact fetching more than £5,000 for both heifersFarm, Worth Maltravers, Swanage, Dorset. and young bulls. Fermentations lookgood with a pH of 4.0 and Ammonia of 4.5.Farmers having silage analysed thisseason will spot slight differences in themetabolisable energy (ME) values, afterchanges to the equation used to determinesilage energy values. The new equation reduces the energy ofhigh ME silage so the need to manuallycorrect rations by farmers and nutritionistshas disappeared. The effect only becomessignificant after an ME of 10.8. The newequation was developed to account forhigher dry matter silage being made inrecent years. It is important to have your forage analysedto be able to accurately ration your stockand predict milk and meat production.Contact your local CWF sales specialist orcall 01225 701335 to arrange for a sampleto be taken.TOP SELLER: Balbithon Vespasian4Serving the rural community

Poor herd healthcosts UK £millionsPraise for Pre CalverHigh Somatic Cell Counts and mastitis, poorfertility and lameness are the three maincauses of producers losing £millions every year.Countrywide Farmers (CWF) is offering ahelping hand this winter with the introductionof Safeguard, a unique blend of minerals andvitamins combined to ensure specific increasedsupplementation in dairy compounds.Dairy farmerDavid Phillips, fromTrebared, Cardiganwas so pleased withhis Pre Calver fromCountrywide Farmersthat he wantedto pass it on.“Calving down 180cows last Autumn, and calling the Vet ononly two occasions, our cows calvedeffortlessly with the calves up and sucklingwithin an hour. This made calf rearingmuch easier as they were always keenfor their feed.“The time and money we spent selectingand caring for the cows during the dryperiod was fully justified when the cowsand heifers came straight into milk andthen back in calf, with the conception ratefor cows being 63% at 1.57 straws perconception,” said David.Safeguard contains high levels of Vitamin Eand Selenium together with protected Zinc –all elements that have been shown to lowerSomatic Cell Counts and reduce mastitis levels. These elements, plus the protected Copper inSafeguard promotes improved fertility.Safeguard contains Biotin, which combines withthe protected Zinc to promote hoof hardness, improve foot condition and reduce lameness.Increasing the right minerals and vitaminsimproves the effectiveness of the immunesystem, which leads to healthier cows and thecalves growing inside. Speak to your CWF salesspecialist who will be able to discuss howSafeguard can benefit your cows and helpimprove profitability.Topcalf 17 pelletsCountrywide Farmers (CWF) has introduceda new high quality calf starter feed – Topcalf17 pellets replacing Calf Starter and CalfWeaner pellets.Topcalf 17 is designed to encourage earlyintakes in the very young calf whose digestivesystem is still immature. The digestible fibrestimulates rumen development and the highlevels of digestible, undegradeable proteinpromotes good growth in the young calfwhen microbial protein supply is limiting. Also included in Topcalf 17 pellets is Biomos,a yeast derivative to help prevent digestiveupsets by mopping up the bad bugs that causescours. Topcalf 17 pellets are flavour linkedto the CWF Milk powder range with a newstrawberry flavour to encourage feed intake.‘Top Totty’ triumphsIsn’t she lovely?
