COMMON RASH MAY AFFECT THE STUTTGART MILITARY COMMUNITYWHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS RASH?The Oak Processionary Caterpillar is a common insect found in the Stuttgart community. This particular caterpillarlives in oak trees in the caterpillar stage from May through July. The hairs on the caterpillar contain an irritant tohuman skin.WILL I ONLY GET THIS RASH IF I TOUCH THE CATERPILLAR?Unfortunately, many present with this rash without even knowing caterpillars were in the area. The caterpillarcontinually sheds fine hairs that contain an irritant and the hairs become airborne. In most cases, these fine hairs landon your skin which causes the rash. In fewer cases, the hairs may land in your mouth or eyes and you will experiencesymptoms other than a rash (see below).WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE IF I HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THESE CATERPILLAR HAIRS?The most common symptoms are the itchy rash and dermatitis (inflammatory condition of the skin). This rash mayconsist of flat discolorations or raised bumps on the skin. If the caterpillar hairs come in contact with your eyes ormouth, you may also experience conjunctivitis (red eyes, sticky discharge, inflammation of the eye) and/or irritationto the throat/airway. Itching typically begins 2-12 hours after exposure and the rash may be widely spread over theentire body.HOW CAN I PREVENT MYSELF FROM COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE IRRITATING HAIRS OFTHIS CATERPILLAR?These caterpillar hairs will be present in the environment May through July. Restricting outdoor activities near oaktrees will reduce the concentration of the caterpillar hairs that you are exposed to. When participating in outdooractivities, use personal protective measures to reduce your contact with the hairs, such as wearing long clothing and ahat. Frequent laundering of clothing worn outdoors will also reduce your repeated exposure to the hairs that may beon your clothing. These hairs are very fine and you likely will not notice them simply by inspecting your clothing. In the past our local Fire Department physically removed large amounts of these caterpillars from the oak trees. Priorto removal, they are blocking off areas identified with red and white tape. If you see the red and white tape, pleaseavoid the area.OAK PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLAR RASH
