Since the mid-1990s, traditionally used felttechniques to produce floor coverings (Radi) and blankets (Pakhi) were transferred to the production andexport of fashion wear and accessories. 79 Annually, Nepal imports about 4,000 MT of wool valued at aboutUS$11 million from New Zealand, China, and Australia. 80 About 1,200 to 1,500 MT of wool is used in theproduction of knitted and felt products and the remainder for carpet weaving. Paradoxically, locally producedsheep wool of 500 to 600 MT 81 is not being utilized in such products due to lack of quality wool and appropriatewool processing technology.Index 1: Export PerformanceTable 2.41Export Value of Wool Products, 2005-2009 (US$1,000)2005 2006 2007 2008 2009Exports 12,292 12,915 13,656 16,491 n/aNet exports 9,219 9,686 10,242 12,368 n/a77Knitted products include sweaters, pullover, cardigans, mufflers, caps, gloves, mittens, socks, and bags and felt products are shoes, bags, caps, hats, scarves, wrist warmers, and other accessories.78Trade and Export Promotion Centre, Nepal Foreign Trade Data - 2008/09.79Felt making out of Yak wool originated in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Nepal.
