lqchamber.com November 2006 La Quinta Chamber of CommerceThe Gem 5PLEASE DON’T CALL IT LA KWINTABy Leslie LafayetteThis, That, andA RoundaboutSo there I was in a nail salon in Old Town, and Ladies, did you ever think whenyou were a young girl struggling to raise the kids or finish your education thatone day you’d be casually saying, “I must drop by for my manicure and pedicure?”Even today it is hard for me to find time for this personal little indulgence, and by the way, I have noticed more and more of our husbands, sons and malecolleagues with their feet lathered up, requesting the “Sea Scrub” pedicure. Wow,metrosexuality is alive and well in LQ, eh?So anyway, while waiting for the nail polish to dry – which takes longer thanWaiting for Godot - I got to talking with a charming woman as young and asbeautiful as I am (just checking to see if you are still reading). Before long we discoveredthat we not only grew up in the San Fernando Valley, but we attended thesame grammar school, junior high and high school! The report from here is, it isstill a small world! It made me think about how little La Quinta once was but how many newbiesare joining our ranks each season. And I thought our new residents and visitors(and some of our older codgers, too) might appreciate a few Helpful Hints aboutnegotiating their way around our town and what to watch out for.( I never haveany problem telling people how to behave; I was, after all, a high school teacherfor too many years.)For starters, let’s tackle that Roundabout again. If you are from the east, youknow what these are. And if you have traveled in Europe, and especially thoseparts of Europe which favor driving on the WRONG (no, not the left, the WRONG)side of the road, you are used to roundabouts, although I do not recommendnegotiating a roundabout in Scotland while learning how to downshift in yourrental car and arguing with your traveling companion about what is on the map. This can lead to not one but two blown-out tires which are not covered by yourinsurance. But that’s another story for another time.At this time of the year, the Roundabout, located at Jefferson and 52nd , adjacentto Silver Rock, reminds me of those spinning things we kids used to jump onat the playground. Remember? It was going full tilt and you had to take a real runat it, leap up, grab the handle, and hope you could maneuver onto the spinningcircle and not drag your little feet in the sand pit.Shall we review the Rules of the Roundabout one more time? Okay, here goes. The most important one: HE WHO IS IN THE ROUNDABOUT HAS THE RIGHT OFWAY. This does not mean “sometimes.” It means always. The only way you haveto look when you get to the Roundabout is to your LEFT. When you determine itto be a reasonable time to enter the circle (“reasonable” does not mean 10 feetahead of the car speeding your way) , do so.Even though you now have the “right of way” because you are in theRoundabout, beware of drivers entering from your right. Some of them don’tknow that you have the right of way. Some of them don’t care. Some of them aretalking on cell phones and haven’t seen you. So maneuver your way through cautiously.Going around the Roundabout at 60 mph is frowned upon. Drivingthrough the center island of the Roundabout is not considered good form.Stopping cold and freezing from fear as you reach the Roundabout is not appreciatedand will result in a lot of disgruntled drivers behind you on Jefferson whomay shake their fists and share a few phrases with you that you’d rather not hear.In my next column we’ll talk about why you shouldn’t drive on Monroe to getanywhere, how Madison disappears halfway south of 111, why all the big beautifulTamarisks that once marked Avenue 54, providing shade and respite in thesummer, have been sawed in half by an apparently bad magician, how to avoiddoing the Wal Mart U-Turn Boogie, ten hobbies you can take up while waiting forthe light to change at Washington and 111, and who makes the absolute bestestdanged Drive-Thru Burger in LQ (your mileage may vary.)RESTAURANT REVIEW: A TASTE OF LA QUINTABlendSophisticated dining in La QuintaBy Felice ChiapperiniNestled on a quiet block, there isn’tmuch to advertise the restaurant’s presenceuntil your round the corner and seethe multicolor sign and warm, inviting glow of the entry canopy. Inside, the décor aptlyreflects the establishment’s name by artfully blending bright swatches of primary colorswith tasteful furnishings and subtle lighting to create a comfortable dining ambiance. My friends and I were seated at a table that had a good view of the main room. Thereis also a lively bar area and several smaller dining nooks. Michael, our friend, Susanand I all ordered Mojitos. We knew we were in for a treat when the bartender sent thewaiter out to the herb garden to pick the fresh mint for our drinks! Our other friend,Nicolaas, enjoyed a glass of Merlot. For starters Nicolaas ordered the steamed mussels in green Thai curry and coconutlobster broth. Susan tried the Dungeness crab cake with spring vegetable salad andcitrus vinaigrette. Michael selected the grilled prawns with arugula, avocado, jicamaand pico de gallo, and I enjoyed the Caesar salad, complete with Spanish whiteanchovies. The menu is quite extensive with entrée offerings ranging from beef, chicken andpasta to venison, rabbit and even skate wing. The intriguing Chef’s Tasting Menu offers afive-course dinner created by the chefs each evening and served as a surprise; you onlyget to specify any ingredients you don’t want included. Now for our entrees. Susan got the grilled mahi-mahi with cauliflower, braisedromaine and saffron tomato broth. Nicolaas ordered the maple brined pork prime ribwith polenta, bacon and Brussels sprouts. Michael tried the red wine braised beef withhorseradish mashed potatoes and I ordered the wild salmon with miso sake marinadeand broccolini.Michael and Nicolaas opted to skip dessert. Susan ordered the trio of fresh sorbetsand I tried the passion fruit panna cotta with fresh blueberry sauce, along with a veryample glass of Italian Grappa. With creative, first rate cuisine, professional and friendly service, Blend easilyascends to the ranks of the Desert’s top restaurants. Next time you’re celebrating, or justwant a special treat, take a drive out to beautiful La Quinta and enjoy a meal at Blend. You won’t be disappointed.78073 Calle Barcelona • La Quinta, CA 92253 • (760) 564-4771, fax (760) 564-3202Leslie Lafayette, MA, is a Chamber member and owner-broker of Lafayetteroperties, a full service real estate brokerage. 6 The Gem La Quinta Chamber of Commerce November 2006 lqchamber.comLEGISLATIVE COMMITTEEMEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEBy John PeñaThis year, as in virtually every year since the 1950s,California’s population is projected to grow by more than500,000 people, driving the state population to almost 37million. More than 80 percent of Californians live in cities, requiring the cities to respond with more housing, schools, improved transportation systems, upgraded sewers anddrinking water systems, flood control, parks, libraries and other facilities. These factors make it easy to see why increased funding for infrastructure isso crucial for California cities. On the November ballot, there is a package ofinfrastructure funding measures. The following summarizes these measures, andwhy they are so important for cities. For more information go to the VoterInformation Guide at: http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_vig.htmProposition 1A - Transportation Funding Protection. Legislative ConstitutionalAmendment. (Prop. 42 Reform)This measure is not a bond, but a constitutional amendment designed to “fix”Proposition 42 - the 2002 ballot measures that funded transportation - bypermanently dedicating the sales tax on gasoline to transportation purposes.Proposition 1B - Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality, and Port SecurityBond Act of 2006.$2 billion for the Local Street and Road Improvement, Congestion Relief, and TrafficSafety Account, allocated directly to cities and counties for traffic congestion relief, traffic safety, transit, storm damage, maintenance, construction and other projectsto improve the local street and road system. $1 billion will go directly to cities(minimum $400,000 allocation), and $1 billion will go directly to counties. Otherallocations apply as well.Proposition 1C - Housing and Emergency Shelter Trust Fund Act of 2006.Prop. 1C contains $2.85 billion in funding to address a range of housing needs, including $1.35 billion that helps cities address housing-related infrastructureissues:Proposition 1D - Kindergarten - University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of2006.This measure would provide $10.4 billion in bonds to be deposited into the 2006State School Facilities fund, which will be used to meet capital outlay needs ofhigher educational facilities, and finance grants for construction and renovation ofschools, including charter schools and facilities for career technical educationprograms, and to relieve overcrowded schools. This also includes $29 million tofund joint-use projects for construction of K-12 school facilities.Proposition 1E - Disaster Preparedness and Flood Prevention Bond Act of 2006.This bond would provide a total of $4.09 billion to prevent flooding by repairinglevees and other flood control infrastructure in the Sacramento-San Joaquin RiverDelta and elsewhere.Robert F. lqchamber.com November 2006 La Quinta Chamber of CommerceThe Gem 7GEM OF THE MONTHNovember:Topaz or CitrineIn colors of autumn leaves, topaz is the traditional birthstonefor the month of November. Ancient Greeks associated topazwith strength, perhaps in recognition of the gem’s hardnessand exceptional clarity. Across the world, topaz has been linkedin legend and lore with more curative powers than any othergemstone. A long held belief in India maintains that a topazworn above the heart assures not only a long life but also beauty and intelligence.Topaz occurs in a wide range of colors, from colorless to golden tones and sherrybrowns. Most pretty pink and soothing blue colors seen today have been permanentlyinduced by heating topaz, thus making these popular hues more affordable andreadily available. A harder gem than quartz, topaz can still break when struck in itsweak plane. Shield topaz with protective settings in rings or bracelets and the stonewill show lasting beauty in a variety of cuts and shapes.November’s alternative birthstone is citrine, a variety of quartz. This sun jewel takesits name from the Latin citrus for its warm shades of yellow to orange. Brazil is amajor source for this lemony gem as well as topaz, where both can occur as massivecrystals weighing dozens of pounds. Citrine is sometimes confused with topaz but ismore abundant in nature and thus, less costly. Lapidaries use large and lovely citrinefor gem carvings ranging from decorative perfume bottles to soaring crystal sculptures.Citrine can be scratched by harder stones such as topaz and sapphires. Large crystalsare ideal for unusual cuts and shapes, especially in pendants. While citrine dressesup well with diamonds, its sunny tones can provide contrast in combination settingswith cooler red, blue and purple gemstones.Happy Birthday, November babies!© Matilde Parente, LIBERTINE Fine Jewelry Salon at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort& Spa. Or maybeyou're 65 and are buying your retirementhome. In either case, you know you're notmoving for at least a decade. What you want: No doubt about it. Inthe current environment, you want a fixedratemortgage. Rates on a 30-year fixed-rateloan are incredibly low, and though a fixedrate still costs more than an adjustable-ratemortgage, the difference between the two isnot that great.THE RELOCATORYou're never going to spend more than afew years in this house. Maybe your spousehas a thing about moving. Maybe youknow you'll eventually need space to workfrom home. In any case, you're certain thisisn't where you'll grow old. What you want: You're a candidate foran adjustable mortgage or maybe a“delayed adjustable.” Also known as 3-1s, 5-1s and 7-1s, these loans are fixed for theirfirst three, five or seven years, then convertto a one-year adjustable.THE CREDIT DELINQUENTYou've got a couple of 30-day late paymentson your Visa card, and once you forgotto pay the phone bill. Will you be ableto get a loan? What you want: Alt A, or Sub Primeloan. Lenders have finally figured out thatmost people with 20% to 30% equity in ahome aren't going to walk away from it, evenif their credit is bad.Of course each case is different, but withcareful planning and research you can findthe right mortgage to keep you “financiallyhealthy”.Owen Croomes is a mortgage professionalwith over 25 years experience in the real estate /insurance industry. 22 The Gem La Quinta Chamber of Commerce November 2006 lqchamber.comPART 1VIDEO MARKETING: IT’S NOT JUST FORLARGE CORPORATIONS ANYMORE!It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousandwords. If so, a video is equivalent to winningthe Mega Millions Lottery. Video entertains, explains and endorses by combining picture, sound and motion. In as little as 30 secondsyour client is able to experience yourproduct or service, not just read the words onyour brochure. From the cozy surroundings ofhis or her home your client is emotionallyattached to your marketing message like neverTRENDS & IDEAS inVIDEO MARKETINGA FOUR PART SERIESby Mike Britton, Executive Producer,Britton HD Video Productionsbefore. However in the past, video marketinghas been the medium for only the very rich.Production crews, studios, film and all of theassociated time and expenses of editing havekept most businesses tied to print, my formerbusiness being one of them. But technology, innovation and the drive to change an industryhave brought Hollywood capabilities to thelocal businessperson right here in La Quinta. After 20 years in the publishing and printmarket I decided to focus my efforts onredefining the way video marketing wasaccomplished. After watching some of thevery best examples (SuperBowl commercials)and some of the worst (local cable commercials)I was determined to develop a processthat would allow the average business to producean effective video message and deliver itin multiple formats to their market withoutspending their yearly budget on just one campaign.Oh, and be proud of the end result.Admittedly advances in the Internet, DVDduplication equipment, video recording hardwareand non-linear editing software facilitatedmy mission. However the workflow, personneland methodology required for a videoshoot had to change or the cost of producingand distributing would remain out of reachfor most. But the biggest hurdle was overcomingthe mindset of the small to medium businessperson-- that you had to be on the NewYork Stock Exchange to be able to afford videomarketing. Well, nothing could be furtherfrom the truth. What if I told you that you could place avideo infomercial DVD in the hands of yourclients for the cost of a printed brochure? Isthat something that would interest you? Whatif you could show the benefits of your productto the world with a streaming web video? Isthat something that could boost your business? What if you could grab the attention ofa potential client at your next tradeshow witha large screen exhibit video instead of havingthem simply walk by your booth? Is thatsomething that could take your business tothe next level?Over the next three months we’ll explorethe Technology, the Creative Process and theOutlets for video marketing. We’ll attach somereal cost figures to video productions andshow you how to maximize your marketingdollars and place your message in front ofclients down the street and around the world.Remember, video marketing isn’t just forlarge New York corporations anymore, it’s aviable medium for your business as well.Mike Britton is creator of Adobe Press andcurrent owner of Britton HD Video Productionsin La Quinta.
