Exploration of a Green Energy Source<br />

Thermoelectric technology is used to convert a temperature<br />

difference into electricity. This technology is based on the Seebeck<br />

effect where two metals are joined to form a closed loop, when a<br />

temperature difference exists between these two metals an electrical<br />

current is formed. A Caframo Ecofan that harnesses thermoelectric<br />

technology has been salvaged to use the generated electricity. The<br />

electrical output will be measured at various temperature differences<br />

to find the optimal electrical performance. Various applications for<br />

the use of the generated electricity are being explored. The most<br />

promising of these include lighting systems that incorporate LED<br />

technology due to their low power consumption. A simple design<br />

setup will be constructed to illustrate the use of the produced<br />

electricity in a lighting system. This technology can be used to<br />

harness wasted energy in the form of heat, making this a green<br />

energy source. Possible industries where the proposed lighting<br />

systems could be used include automotive, aerospace and building<br />

power systems.<br />

The Future of Technology Literacy<br />

Technology Literacy is an important issue to future US economic<br />

success. This thesis examines the validity of the Technology and<br />

Engineering Literacy Framework set forward by the National<br />

Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The research goal is<br />

to develop a deeper understanding of this influential doctrine on the<br />

future of Technology Education. One area of focus is to determine<br />

the extent to which the assessment of Technology Literacy will be<br />

linked to emerging teacher performance/appraisal methodologies.<br />

The paper will feature an in-depth review of the published NAEP<br />

Framework, and other key works that address Technology Literacy.<br />

A questionnaire will be administered to poll current Technology<br />

Education teachers regarding both their understanding of the<br />

NAEP framework and reaction to the proposed teacher assessment.<br />

This research project is expected to provide a critique of the NAEP<br />

Framework, as it currently exists, and to buttress the argument that<br />

assessment of every student’s Technology literacy is a much-needed<br />

component of educational improvement at the secondary school<br />

level. It is hoped that this study will provide meaningful feedback of<br />

NAEP-related guidelines slated for implementation in 2014.<br />

High Speed Web Development Using<br />

Django and South<br />

The field of Web Development has grown very rapidly over<br />

the last 10 years, with new technology being born every day.<br />

Newer frameworks boast high-speed development and my<br />

research examines those claims made by the authors of the<br />

Django framework. Django and South will be used to create a<br />

web application and to examine the speed of development. A web<br />

application would need to be created in order to immerse myself<br />

deeply into the framework. This web application would allow a<br />

user to manage their account, add vehicles to their garage, and<br />

post pictures/updates about progress on automotive projects. In<br />

order to mimic a full development stack I would use South to<br />

manage schema migrations and the Django ORM to utilize built in<br />

functionality like the administration panel and user classes. Celery<br />

would also be used to off load blocking IO from the webserver when<br />

images would need to be operated on. Unlike other frameworks, the<br />

documentation provided by the Django has been a vital asset during<br />

development process and due to this I was able to add features at a<br />

faster rate compared to other frameworks. Lower overhead, logical<br />

configuration, automatic administrative scaffolding and the power of<br />

Python aided in such improvements.<br />

Increasing Technology Education<br />

Enrollment Through Project Lead the Way<br />

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a widely accepted preengineering<br />

curriculum offered by school districts across the US.<br />

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of PLTW on<br />

enrollment in high school Technology Education classes. While<br />

PLTW is highly regard nationally, its impact on overall enrollment<br />

in Technology Education classes (in the schools that adopt the<br />

program) is not well understood. This study will compare data<br />

regarding the percentage of students who enroll in technology<br />

education classes in schools that do, and in schools that do not<br />

embrace PLTW. The study will use student participation data<br />

collected from a cohort of selected schools. The study aims to<br />

determine the degree of statistical correlation between implementing<br />

PLTW and increased pupil participation in high school Technology<br />

Education classes. It is expected that a strong statistical inference<br />

regarding the impact or PLTW on Technology Education enrollment<br />

may be enabled by the study findings.<br />
