352<strong>User</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> for <strong>Thresholds</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Classification</strong>s<strong>Classification</strong> strategy for metalsWhere the L(E)C 50 for the metal ions of concern is > 100 mg/L, the metals need not be considered further inthe classification scheme.Where the L(E)C 50 for thavailable on the rate <strong>and</strong> extent <strong>to</strong> which these ions can be generated from the metal. Such data, <strong>to</strong> be valid<strong>and</strong> useable should have been generated using the Transformation/Dissolution Pro<strong>to</strong>col (Appendix 19G).Where such data are unavailable, that is, there is no clear data of sufficient validity <strong>to</strong> show that thetransformation <strong>to</strong> metal ions will not occur, the safety net classification (9.1D) should be applied since theknown classifiable <strong>to</strong>xicity of these soluble forms is considered <strong>to</strong> produce sufficient concern.Where data from dissolution pro<strong>to</strong>col are available, then, the results should be used <strong>to</strong> aid classificationaccording <strong>to</strong> the following rules.Seven-day transformation testIf the dissolved metal ion concentration after a period of 7 days (or earlier) exceeds that of the L(E)C 50 , thenthe default classification for the metals is replaced by the following classification.If the dissolved metal ion concentration at the low loading rate is greater than or equal <strong>to</strong> the L(E)C 50 ,then classify as 9.1A.If the dissolved metal ion concentration at the medium loading rate is greater than or equal <strong>to</strong> theL(E)C 50 , then classify 9.1B unless there is evidence of both rapid partitioning from the water column <strong>and</strong>no bioaccumulation, in which case classify as 9.1D.If the dissolved metal ion concentration at the high loading rate is greater than or equal <strong>to</strong> the L(E)C 50 ,then classify as 9.1C unless there is evidence of both rapid partitioning from the water column <strong>and</strong> nobioaccumulation, in which case classify as 9.1D.Twenty-eight-day transformation testIf the process described in for the first step of the 7-day transformation test results in the classification of9.1A, no further assessment is required, as the metal will be classified irrespective of any further information.In all other cases, further data may have been generated through the transformation test in order <strong>to</strong> showthat the classification may be amended. If for substances classified as 9.1B, 9.1C, or 9.1D the dissolvedmetal ion concentration at the low loading rate after a <strong>to</strong>tal period of 28 days is less than or equal <strong>to</strong> the ofthe long-term NOECs, then the classification is removed.<strong>Classification</strong> strategy for metal compoundsWhere the L(E)C 50 for the metal ions of concern is greater than 100 mg/L, the metal compounds need not beconsidered further in the classification scheme.January 2012 EPA0109
