These fac<strong>to</strong>rs need <strong>to</strong> be taken in<strong>to</strong> account when considering data from thesesubstances. Many polymers behave like complex substances, however, having a significant low molecularmass fraction that can leach from the bulk polymer. This is considered further below.Complex substancesComplex substances are characterised by a range of chemical structures, frequently in a homologous series,but covering a wide range of water solubilities <strong>and</strong> other physico-chemical characteristics. On addition <strong>to</strong>water, equilibrium will be reached between the dissolved <strong>and</strong> undissolved fractions that will be characteristicof the loading of the substance. For this reason, such complex substances are usually tested as a WSF orWAF, <strong>and</strong> the L(E)C 50 recorded based on the loading or nominal concentrations. Analytical support data arenot normally available since the dissolved fraction will itself be a complex mixture of components. The <strong>to</strong>xicityparameter is sometimes referred <strong>to</strong> as LL 50 , related <strong>to</strong> the lethal loading level. This loading level from theWSF or WAF may be used directly in the classification criteria.Polymers represent a special kind of complex substance, requiring consideration of the polymer type <strong>and</strong>their dissolution/dispersal behaviour. Polymers may dissolve as such without change, (true solubility related<strong>to</strong> particle size), be dispersible, or portions consisting of low molecular weight fractions may go in<strong>to</strong> solution.In the latter case, in effect, the testing of a polymer is a test of the ability of low molecular mass material <strong>to</strong>leach from the bulk polymer, <strong>and</strong> whether this leachate is <strong>to</strong>xic.
