Medal Recipients for 2007
H. Lee Allen Jr., C.A. Schenck Distinguished Professor of Forestry and
Environmental Resources
Professor Lee Allen has served NC State University for
29 years. He assumed the directorship of the Forest
Fertilization Cooperative in 1981, which under his
leadership became the internationally recognized Forest
Nutrition Cooperative, a teaching, research and service
partnership between NC State, Virginia Tech, and the
University of Conception (Chile) and 38 commercial and
public forestry interests across the southern U.S. and in
Latin America with 24 million acres of forest plantations
under management. Professor Allen’s research on sustainable
production and silviculture, ecophysiology of trees, and genetic diff erences in
resource acquisition and use has yielded over 240 research publications and millions
of dollars in research funding. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. and 35 M.S. students
(including 26 international students), who now hold infl uential positions around the
world. He has delivered workshops to over 3,500 foresters and forest land owners. His
service to the Southern forestry industry has increased its competitiveness, resulting
in an estimated 15 million more tons of wood and $400 million in additional value
annually. He is a member of NC State’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers, a recipient
of an Outstanding Extension Service Award and Outstanding Teacher Award, and has
received a USDA Forest Service Certifi cate of Appreciation.
Ruben G. Carbonell, Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical
and Biomolecular Engineering
Professor Ruben Carbonell has devoted 23 years to
research, teaching, service, and administration at NC
State. Since 1999, he has been Director of the William R.
Kenan, Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology, and Science.
He established the highly successful Kenan
Fellows for Curriculum and Leadership Program, which
has become a national model for university K-12 outreach.
Also since 1999, he has co-directed the NSF Science and
Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible
Solvents and Processes, which was created by a National
Honors Baccalaureate 2007 9

Science Foundation grant that was the largest ever received by the UNC system at the
time of the award. He also served as Department Head of the Department of Chemical
and Biomolecular Engineering for fi ve years. Professor Carbonell’s research has
resulted in over 190 publications, 22 patents, and over $22 million in research funding.
He has advised over 70 M.S. and Ph.D. students and 33 postdoctoral students
and visiting faculty. His recent work in bioseparations led to the identifi cation of a
specifi c ligand for the prion protein responsible for mad cow disease in humans.
Th is ligand is being used to remove prion protein from blood products. He is a
Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a recipient of a number
of teaching and research awards, including NC State’s Alumni Distinguished
Graduate Professorship.
Todd R. Klaenhammer, Distinguished University Professor and William Neal
Reynolds Professor of Food Science
Professor Todd Klaenhammer has served NC State for
over 28 years. He has pioneered the industrial application
of molecular genetics to dairy lactic acid bacteria, research
that has led to 170 research articles, 32 book chapters,
201 abstracts, 12 patents, and over $16 million in research
funding. He has supervised 40 M.S. and Ph.D. students,
six of whom received the prestigious Kenneth R. Keller
Award for the outstanding Ph.D. dissertation of the year
in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He has
taught a number of courses in the areas of food, dairy
and fermentation microbiology, with special emphasis on the application of molecular
biology and genomics to practical issues facing the food and dairy industries. He has
presented 165 invited seminars, the majority to national and international audiences.
In 2006, he was recognized as a Distinguished Lecturer by Sigma Xi, Th e Scientifi c
Research Society, and speaks frequently on the topic of “Eat Bacteria-Get Cultured:
New Horizons in Bioprocessing and Health.” His novel and signifi cant scientifi c
contributions in the areas of food science and microbiology have resulted in his
receiving 18 research awards and teaching distinctions, including Alumni
Distinguished Graduate Professor and as a Fellow in the Institute of Food
Technologists, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the American Dairy
Science Association. In 2001, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal Recipients for 2007, continued
Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English
Professor Walt Wolfram has served NC State for 15 years.
He is an internationally recognized pioneer in
sociolinguistics and dialect study. Th e graduate program
in sociolinguistics that he developed at NC State
is now rated as one of the top programs in the world.
His research program in language variation studies has
been supported by 14 externally funded research grants,
including continuous funding from the National Science
Foundation for more than $1.5 million. He has developed
an outreach program on language diversity in North
Carolina that has become an international model for sociolinguistic engagement and
the dissemination of knowledge in the public sector, including the production of
several award-winning TV documentaries, museum exhibits, and dialect awareness
curricula. During his tenure at NC State, Professor Wolfram has authored or coauthored
nine books, edited or co-edited four books, and published more than 125
articles in professional journals and book collections. He has served as President of the
Linguistic Society of America, the American Dialect Society, and the Southeastern
Conference on Linguistics, and was inducted into the inaugural class of Fellows of
the Linguistic Society of America. University honors include an Alumni Association
Distinguished Graduate Professorship and the Alumni Association Outstanding
Research Award. He served on the National Advisory Panel for the Linguistics
Program at the National Science Foundation and the Council for the International
Exchange of Scholars for the Linguistics Program.

�Academic Costume�
Academic gowns represent a tradition handed down from the universities of the Middle
Ages. Th ese institutions were founded by the Church; the students, being clerics, were
obliged to wear the prescribed gowns at all times. Round caps later became square
mortarboards; the hoods, originally cowls attached to the gowns, could be slipped over
the head for warmth.
Many European universities have distinctive caps and gowns which are diff erent from
those commonly used in this country. Some of the gowns are of bright colors and some
are embellished with fur. A number of these may be noted in the procession.
Th e usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. Th e bachelor’s gown
is worn closed; the master’s and doctor’s may be worn open or closed. Th e shape of the
sleeve is the distinguishing mark of the gown: bachelor – long pointed sleeves; master
– oblong, square cut in the back with an arc cut away in front; doctor – bell shaped.
Caps are black. Th e tassels for the Ph.D. degree are gold and those for other graduate
and professional degrees may be of the color corresponding to the trimmings on the
hoods.
Of all the components of the academic costume, the hood bears the heaviest symbolic
burden. Th e hood must make clear the level of the degree, the faculty in which it was
given, and the institution which awarded it. Th e level of the degree is shown by the size
of the hood, the width of the velvet trimming, and in the case of doctors, by the shape.
Th e bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s hoods are three feet, three and one-half feet, and
four feet long, respectively. Th e velvet trimming in the same order is two, three, and
fi ve inches and extends all around the hood on the exposed edge. Th is same trimming
identifi es the faculty in which the degree was awarded. For each faculty there is a corresponding
color; so a glance at the trimming is all that is needed to identify the faculty.
A partial list of the colors follows: Agriculture, maize; Architecture and Art, brown;
Science, golden yellow; Economics, copper; Religion, scarlet; Speech, silver gray; Veterinary
Medicine, gray; Textiles, wine red. Th e following faculties have the same color
– dark blue: Anthropology, History, Languages, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science,
and Sociology.
