UTARHORIZONAUGUST 2012 17Sungai Siput – English and IT TrainingThe WCWA English and IT training workshop was conductedon 31 March 2012 in Sungai Siput New Village near Kampar,where 35 volunteers taught 23 schoolchildren of Sungai SiputSelatan Sin Min Chinese primary school English and IT with theircomputer training aids.“I enjoy helping the villagers through this community serviceproject because I learn about teamwork and leadership,” saidteam leader Tan Zhi Yun.Another volunteer Fong Woei Lunn said, “I have learnt to begrateful and appreciate what I have after seeing the conditionsof the village children.”Bidor – schoolchildren motivatedWCWA volunteers visited Choong Hua 2 Chinese primaryschool in Bidor on 7 April 2012 to motivate the schoolchildrento study hard.They conducted a half-day workshop, which was attended by30 schoolchildren. The workshop started with an icebreakingsession for the volunteers to get to know the children betterbefore guiding them on their study.DIY composting sitein Bali New VillageHousing and Local Government Minister Dato’ Seri Chor CheeHeung mixed the composting material (picture) as he launchedthe do-it-yourself composting site at Bali New Village near Ipoh,Perak on 23 June 2012. Also present was Perak State ExecutiveCouncillor Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon.The DIY composting setup in Bali New Village was initiated by theMinistry of Housing and Local Government to help manage both dryand wet wastes disposed by the villagers. The ministry collaboratedwith Technological Association of Malaysia, UTAR, <strong>Universiti</strong> TeknologiPetronas and Maxwell College to set up the composting site. Last year,the students from the universities and college involved had a dialoguesession with the villagers on proper waste management including theimportance of waste separation for recycling purpose.
