16 AUGUST 2012UTARHORIZONCommunity at HeartWecareWeactThe We-Care-We-Act (WCWA) community service campaign was initiated by the Department of Soft Skills and Competency(DCCS) as a meaningful way to celebrate the UTAR 10th Anniversary. Launched at the beginning of the year, the campaignaimed to engage UTAR students to participate in community service in new villages in Perak including Banir Estate, Tapah Road,Kampung Pahang, Pekan Getah, Temoh, Chenderiang, Bidor Station, Sungkai, Air Kuning, Sungai Kroh, Tanah Mas, Chendrong,Lawan Kuda, Simpang Pulai, Chui Chak, Kuala Bikam, Sungai Durian, Coldstream, and Batu 12. This issue of UTAR Horizonreports the WCWA activities carried out in Air Kuning, Chendrong, Sungai Kroh, Sungai Siput and Bidor.Air Kuning – recycle for charityA group of 30 WCWA volunteers helped in recycling waste items ofthe residents in Air Kuning New Village on 9 June 2012.Divided into 10 groups and accompanied by some villagers, thestudents, equipped with gloves and plastic bags were assigned tocollect recyclable items such as of paper, plastic, metal and glassfrom door to door. They also cleaned up the rubbish along theway.At about noon, they loaded their ‘harvest’ onto a collector’s truck.The money raised from the sales of the recyclable items wasdonated to charity.Chendrong –recycling and health checkupsA recycling campaign was held by 42 WCWA volunteersat Chendrong on 30 June 2012. The campaigngenerated great interest among the villagers onrecycling.Dr Yang Zao (picture, first from left) from theDepartment of Chinese Medicine of the Faculty ofMedicine and Health Sciences, who accompaniedthe group, provided health checkups to the villagers.He was aided by four student volunteers from hisfaculty.Sungai Kroh –English and IT trainingOn 16 June 2012, a group of 22 WCWA volunteers, led byDSSC staff, spent their Saturday teaching Chinese primaryschoolchildren English and IT with computer teaching aids inSungai Kroh New Village.The volunteers brought along a laptop and LCD projector toconduct the three-hour training workshop. They started theworkshop with an icebreaking session to get closer to thechildren before teaching them the basics of English grammar,listening and speaking skills.
