UTARHORIZON4 AUGUST 2012From Talks to ForumsBig Data-enabled innovation for New Business ValueProf Andy Koronios (picture) from University of South Australia, who is also the appointed externalexaminer for UTAR Information Systems (Hons) Business Information Systems programme gave a publiclecture on 8 August 2012 at UTAR Perak Campus.‘Big Data-enabled innovation for New Business Value’ was the title of the talk in which Prof Koroniosled the audience to discover the colossal amount of data collected by enterprises and discuss theopportunities for creating competitive advantage through new business model innovation. He said thatthe proliferation of social media, mobile devices and sensor technologies are exploding the amount ofdata that is generated and collected each day. However, those who are capable of managing and makingsense of the data can create important and enormous business value.“The way businesses make decisions has transformed from intuition and ‘gut-feel’ to evidence-based, auditable decisionmaking,” he said. He added that IT students can profit by becoming business analysts, information managers, data scientists,innovators, marketing sentiment analysts and so on, just as long as they are good at mathematics and statistics.“Prepare yourself for the 21 century jobs; don’t prepare yourself for only one job,” he advised the crowd.Data Challenges inMultimediaEnvironmental SettingProf Paul Roe (picture) fromQueensland University ofTechnology (QUT) was at UTARPerak Campus on 19 June 2012to speak on ‘Data Challengesin Multimedia EnvironmentalSensing’.The QUT Science and EngineeringFaculty professor said traditionalbiodiversity monitoring is labour intensive and expensive.He explained that multimedia sensors can provide asolution to this problem. However, unlike traditionalsensors, multimedia sensors’ data collection process andmanagement can be challenging due to the distributedand voluminous nature of the data.Prof Roe, who is an expert in distributed computing,presented ways in which he addressed the abovechallenges including dynamic and adaptive data movementand processing through his research findings.The Mitigations andRehabilitations of Some NaturalDisaster in Malaysia and Amendment tothe Engineers’ Act MalaysiaIr Dr Ooi Teck Aun (picture), a well-knownand experienced geotechnical engineerin the region delivered a professional talktitled ‘The Mitigations and Rehabilitationsof Some Natural Disaster in Malaysiaand Amendment to the Engineers’ ActMalaysia’ on 1 August 2012 at UTAR KualaLumpur Campus.Held in conjunction with UTAR 10th anniversary, the talk wasattended by more than 50 students, lecturers and delegates fromDaiwa House Industry, one of the largest developers in Japan.Dr Ooi spoke on ethics, professionalism, and responsibilities ofengineers. He cited numerous case studies of natural disasters inMalaysia such as flood, landslide, and tsunami which were linkedto the carelessness of design engineers. One of such exampleswas the Highland Tower landslide incident. 6UTARHORIZONAUGUST 2012From Talks to ForumsTo be Innovative, Don’t Start with CreativityIn conjunction with UTAR 10th anniversary, the University and Malaysia Mental LiteracyMovement jointly organised a public talk titled ‘To be Innovative, Don’t Start with Creativity’.The talk was delivered by Dr Yew Kam Keong, or better known as Dr YKK, (picture) on 7 July 2012 at UTARPetaling Jaya Campus.Dr YKK explained that creativity is getting new ideas and making connection while invention is creatingsomething with our ideas whereas innovation is all about producing benefits and profits from our ideas.He also cited the three primary techniques of creativity, which are fantasy and imagination, breaking rulesand forcing connection. Application of these three techniques will lead a person to be creative. In orderto be innovative, an individual should be curious, frequently ask broad questions and hunt for the keycomponent.Quoting the late American entrepreneur Steve Jobs, the speaker said “good artist copy; great artist steal”. He continued, “Whereinnovation brings new things to the world, imitation spreads them; where innovators break the old mould, imitations perfect the newone; while innovators can win big, imitators often win bigger. Othervisitors were auditor HoongSeng Hong, committeemember Jimmy Thong KarCheong and Captain ChanWeng Kwai.A short talk by Hoong (picture)during the visit gave studentsinsight into the field ofchemistry and its various jobfunctions in other industriessuch as analytical chemistry, agricultural chemistry, biochemistry,chemical engineering, food and flavor chemistry, forensic science,geochemistry, green chemistry and semiconductor chemistry.Besides explaining the benefits of being a member of IKM, Hoongalso briefly discussed the role of chemists in helping to overcomeglobal issues such as global warming.“Let me take you to space,” Dr Mamoru Mohri (picture) told about 100 students and staff who came for his talktitled “Challenging the Unknown”, which was organised by the Astronomy Club at UTAR Kuala Lumpur Campuson 13 July 2012.By that he meant sharing his experience and some still images and videos that were captured when he was inspace in his NASA space shuttle mission as the first Japanese scientist to go into space.Dr Mohri said everything floated and he could swim in air as he presented videos of the aerobic and spinningroutines he executed in mid air in the space shuttle.He also showed videos of some of the experiments that he had carried out in the zero-gravity condition in thespacecraft he was in, which included blowing water bubbles, examining the properties of water, colliding water bubbles with metalball and investigating the changing size of human body parts in space.“The most interesting part of the talk is that before he showed us the outcome of the experiments, he would walk around and askedthe audiences what result they expected, forcing everyone’s brain into high gear,” said Teoh Hui Chieh, a lecturer at UTAR Faculty ofScience and Engineering, who was also the emcee of the talk.Dr Mohri concluded his talk by taking the audience around the Earth as viewed from space through his videos, and finally the Earthas seen from the Moon through Kaguya, a Japanese spacecraft.

He even received his secondary education at a privateindependent Chinese secondary school. As a result, this young manspeaks fluent Mandarin, English, and Bahasa Malaysia.When it comes to tertiary education, Awang rejected all other offersincluding one from a foreign university to join UTAR in May 2005 andenrolled in the Computer Engineering programme. Being a cross-culturalperson, neither cultural background nor language was a barrier for him tobe active in various campus activities. He was an appointed courserepresentative for all three years of study. He was an activemember and had served as secretary and treasurerof the Student Representative Committee.“My three years at UTAR werefruitful and filled me withunforgettable memories. BesidesCFS staff and students, some activities even involved the students’ parents.Among the highlights was a sharing session by entrepreneur Shaun Lee, cofounderof Milk-A-Deal – an e-business budget deal portal.Another highlight was Choong Jian Han and Nevins Chan’s jaw-droppingperformance, in which the duo blindfoldedly solved the Rubik cube puzzlewithin three minutes.The exhibition was a fun-filled platform for CFS students to showcase theknowledge that they have learnt. Launched at the beginning of the year, the campaignaimed to engage UTAR students to participate in community service in new villages in Perak including Banir Estate, Tapah Road,Kampung Pahang, Pekan Getah, Temoh, Chenderiang, Bidor Station, Sungkai, Air Kuning, Sungai Kroh, Tanah Mas, Chendrong,Lawan Kuda, Simpang Pulai, Chui Chak, Kuala Bikam, Sungai Durian, Coldstream, and Batu 12. This issue of UTAR Horizonreports the WCWA activities carried out in Air Kuning, Chendrong, Sungai Kroh, Sungai Siput and Bidor.Air Kuning – recycle for charityA group of 30 WCWA volunteers helped in recycling waste items ofthe residents in Air Kuning New Village on 9 June 2012.Divided into 10 groups and accompanied by some villagers, thestudents, equipped with gloves and plastic bags were assigned tocollect recyclable items such as of paper, plastic, metal and glassfrom door to door. They also cleaned up the rubbish along theway.At about noon, they loaded their ‘harvest’ onto a collector’s truck.The money raised from the sales of the recyclable items wasdonated to charity.Chendrong –recycling and health checkupsA recycling campaign was held by 42 WCWA volunteersat Chendrong on 30 June 2012. The workshop started with an icebreakingsession for the volunteers to get to know the children betterbefore guiding them on their study.DIY composting sitein Bali New VillageHousing and Local Government Minister Dato’ Seri Chor CheeHeung mixed the composting material (picture) as he launchedthe do-it-yourself composting site at Bali New Village near Ipoh,Perak on 23 June 2012. Also present was Perak State ExecutiveCouncillor Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon.The DIY composting setup in Bali New Village was initiated by theMinistry of Housing and Local Government to help manage both dryand wet wastes disposed by the villagers. The ministry collaboratedwith Technological Association of Malaysia, UTAR, Universiti TeknologiPetronas and Maxwell College to set up the composting site. Last year,the students from the universities and college involved had a dialoguesession with the villagers on proper waste management including theimportance of waste separation for recycling purpose.

UTARHORIZONAUGUST 2012 19中 医 药 研 究 中 心 人 员参 观 柔 佛 兴 德 草 药 园 “ 关 爱 自 己 , 感 受 中 医 ”健 康 讲 座 和 义 诊 活 动6 月 2 日 , 拉 曼 大 学 中 医 药 研 究 中 心 的 研 究 人 员 驱 车 横 穿 马 来 半岛 , 来 到 柔 佛 兴 德 (Endau,Johor) 的 草 药 园 , 参 观 了 其 中 的 药用 植 物 。马 来 西 亚 地 处 热 带 , 自 然 条 件 优 越 , 森 林 资 源 非 常 丰 富 , 植 物 品种 极 其 繁 多 , 文 献 记 载 有 8000 多 种 植 物 , 其 中 乔 木 2500 种 , 兰 科植 物 800 多 种 ; 药 用 植 物 包 括 香 料 植 物 和 芳 香 植 物 等 广 泛 应 用 在各 类 型 的 产 品 中 , 如 草 药 、 保 健 添 加 物 、 饮 料 、 香 精 、 香 料 、 化妆 品 等 等 。大 马 本 土 的 植 物 , 因 具 有 丰 富 的 生 物 和 化 学 多 样 性 , 而 拥 有 巨 大的 产 品 潜 力 。 有 鉴 于 此 , 拉 曼 大 学 中 医 药 研 究 中 心 拟 考 虑 在 金 宝校 区 引 进 部 分 品 种 , 人 工 栽 培 , 以 供 今 后 研 发 之 用 。柔 佛 兴 德 (Endau,Johor) 的 德 教 会 紫 茹 阁 百 草 圃 里 栽 种 了 数 百种 当 地 草 药 , 其 中 有 长 春 花 、 忧 遁 草 、 虎 杖 、 两 面 针 、 竹 节 蓼 、黄 花 母 、 半 边 莲 、 穿 心 莲 、 车 前 草 、 黑 面 将 军 、 天 文 草 、 火 殃簕 、 大 驳 骨 丹 、 扶 桑 大 红 花 等 治 疗 疮 疡 热 毒 、 风 湿 痹 症 、 癌 症 等常 见 热 带 病 、 多 发 病 的 民 间 用 药 。12 年 7 月 27 日 , 应 关 丹 有 关 团 体 邀 请 , 由 大 马 华 人 文化 协 会 彭 亨 分 会 气 功 组 、 关 丹 狮 子 会 与 拉 曼 大 学 中 医系 联 办 的 “ 关 爱 自 己 、 感 受 中 医 ” 大 型 健 康 讲 座 及 义诊 活 动 在 关 丹 举 行 。 当 晚 的 健 康 讲 座 获 得 近 700 名 市民 踊 跃 出 席 、 聆 听 , 反 应 热 烈 。 我 校 中 医 系 教 授 翟 亚春 就 “ 前 列 腺 疾 病 ”、 杨 早 助 理 教 授 就 “ 如 何 预 防 癌症 ”、 客 座 教 授 华 浩 明 就 “ 家 庭 常 用 中 药 补 品 ” 等 专题 发 表 了 演 讲 。7 月 28 日 从 上 午 八 点 半 至 下 午 二 点 , 中 医 系 八 名 医 师为 关 丹 民 众 提 供 的 免 费 中 医 医 疗 服 务 , 受 惠 民 众 达 四百 人 之 众 。 参 加 义 诊 的 医 师 还 有 客 座 教 授 杨 亚 平 、 李益 生 和 甘 君 学 , 郑 建 强 博 士 、 黄 凤 菱 也 提 供 了 传 统 的针 灸 及 推 拿 治 疗 。此 次 健 康 讲 座 及 义 诊 活 动 是 关 丹 同 类 活 动 中 参 加 民 众最 多 、 反 应 最 佳 、 影 响 最 大 的 一 次 活 动 , 中 医 系 职 员也 借 此 机 会 向 关 丹 地 区 民 众 介 绍 了 拉 曼 大 学 及 开 办 近二 年 的 中 医 课 程 。 本 次 活 动 并 得 到 媒 体 的 关 注 及 广 泛报 道 。当 地 德 教 会 志 工 经 常 用 这 些 药 草 免 费 治 疗 民 众 的 疾 患 , 疗 效 颇佳 。 研 究 中 心 人 员 兴 致 勃 勃 的 参 观 了 药 物 园 中 的 这 些 热 带 植 物 ,进 行 了 仔 细 考 察 , 收 获不 少 , 已 决 定 在 其 中 选定 数 十 种 药 用 植 物 引 进栽 种 , 准 备 在 霹 雳 的 金宝 校 区 建 立 大 学 草 药 园地 , 进 一 步 深 入 马 来 西亚 本 地 草 药 的 研 究 。《 颈 椎 病 之 中 医 预 防及 患 者 自 治 方 略 》什 么 是 颈 椎 病 ? 颈 椎 病 是 颈 椎 骨 关 节 炎 、 增 生 性 颈 椎 炎 、 颈 神 经 根 综 合 征 、 颈 椎 间 盘 脱出 症 的 总 称 , 是 一 种 以 退 行 性 病 理 改 变 为 基 础 的 疾 患 。 颈 椎 病 是 颈 椎 退 行 性 变 引 起 颈 椎 管 或 椎 间孔 变 形 、 狭 窄 , 刺 激 、 压 迫 颈 部 脊 髓 、 神 经 根 , 并 引 起 相 应 临 床 症 状 的 疾 病 。此 病 多 见 于 40 岁 以 上 患 者 。 随 着 人 们 工 作 、 生 活 方 式 的 改 变 , 颈 椎 病 是 现 代 社 会 的 常 见 病 、 多 发病 , 其 病 发 率 明 显 上 升 且 患 者 日 趋 年 轻 化 。拉 曼 大 学 延 续 教 育 中 心 于 8 月 11 日 举 办 《 颈 椎 病 之 中 医 预 防 及 患 者 自 治 方 略 》 讲 座 , 邀 请 拉 曼 大学 与 保 健 科 学 学 院 中 医 系 讲 师 郑 建 强 博 士 主 讲 。 郑 博 士 说 , 造 成 颈 椎 病 的 病 因 包 括 慢 性 劳 损 、 外伤 、 不 良 姿 势 、 寒 冷 潮 湿 、 遗 传 因 素 和 其 他 原 因 , 如 咽 炎 等 。他 说 , 颈 椎 病 的 分 型 可 分 为 神 经 根 型 , 脊 椎 型 , 椎 动 脉 型 和 交 感 神 经 型 四 种 。 常 见 的 症 状 如 : 颈部 有 不 同 程 度 的 畸 形 及 僵 硬 现 象 , 常 伴 有 头 颈 肩 背 手 臂 酸 痛 , 一 侧 肩 背 部 沉 重 感 , 上 肢 无 力 , 手指 发 麻 , 肢 体 皮 肤 感 觉 减 退 , 手 握 物 无 力 , 有 时 不 自 觉 的 握 物 落 地 ; 头 痛 、 头 晕 、 偏 头 痛 、 头 沉 、 头 昏 , 枕 部 痛 或 颈 后痛 , 下 肢 无 力 , 行 走 不 稳 , 二 脚 麻 木 , 行 走 时 如 踏 棉 花 的 感 觉 , 排 尿 或 排 便 障碍 ; 心 跳 加 快 , 心 律 紊 乱 、 心 前 区 疼 痛 、 血 压 升 高 和 胸 部 紧 束 感 等 。人 们 可 通 过 体 格 检 查 , 颈 部 X 光 片 , 颈 部 CT 和 颈 部 MRI 等 方 法 诊 断 是 否 患 有 颈 椎病 。 此 外 , 人 们 若 保 有 良 好 正 确 的 姿 势 和 经 常 运 动 , 也 可 预 防 颈 椎 病 发 生 。这 场 讲 座 吸 引 了 近 百 人 出 席 聆 听 。 郑 博 士 还 在 会 上 亲 自 示 范 穴 位 按 摩 和 教 导 出席 者 简 单 易 学 的 保 健 运 动 。

Kempen dimulakan dengan majlis perasmianoleh Presiden UTAR Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teikserta disaksikan oleh Naib Presiden (Pembangunan Pelajar danHubungan Alumni) Dr Teh Chee Seng, Ketua Jabatan Hal-EwhalPelajar Tee Sock Sing dan Timbalan Dekan Fakulti Perubatandan Sains Kesihatan Prof Dr Yap Sook Fan. Kemudian, merekamengiringi Prof Chuah untuk melawat pameran kesihatan yangdikendalikan oleh pelajar UTAR.Kempen yang berlangsung selama tiga hari tersebut turutmempersembahkan peluang kepada para pengunjung untukmenjalani pemeriksaan kesihatan yang diadakan dengankerjasama Yayasan Buah Pinggang Kebangsaan. Pameran itu bertujuan untuk memupuk minat pelajardalam bidang sains dan penyelidikan.Acara yang berlangsung selama dua hari itu mempersembahkaneksperimen yang dikendali oleh pensyarah dari Pusat PengajianAsasi (CFS) UTAR. Selain itu, pameran poster, ceramah danpelbagai aktiviti interaktif turut diadakan.Pameran yang diselia of pensyarah CFS itu turut memberipeluang kepada para peserta untuk mencuba eksperimen yangberkaitan dengan bidang kimia.
