THE PROPHET 3PAC MANIA!Arielle GonzalezUC TECH CONTINUESTHE UNION CATHOLIC PERFORMING ARTS Company (PAC) was busy this TO IMPRESSAlexa Feeyear tackling the ever present challenge of bringing art to the masses. Thefall comedy, Incorruptible; the spring musical, Into the Woods; PAC Awards;the upcoming summer plays, Love Awkwardly; and An Evening of One Acts, allbring the “art of life” to the UC stage. The fall comedy, directed by English teacher Mrs. Addison, centeredon the lives of monks who must save their monastery from financial collapsewith the help of a jester, his girlfriend, and her mother. Laughter echoedthrough the auditorium, as it does every year at the fall play, and the show leftno one disappointed. (For more information on the fall play check out TheProphet article: “Incorruptible was an Indescribable Success” in our Novemberissue.)This year’s spring musical, Into the Woods, provided audience memberswith laughs, tears, and a prophetic message they will be digesting formonths to come. The original story of a childless baker and his wife who havebeen put under a curse by a witch and must travel “into the woods” to breakthe spell blends with the classic stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood,Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and many other characters who are all tryingto get their individual wishes to create this new, slightly twisted, fairytalethat teaches people that what you wish is not always what you want. The show, directed by English teacher Mrs. Carolan, started rehearsalsin October to prepare for opening night in March. The reason for the fivemonth practice period was because of the difficulty of the show in both actingand singing. The set also provided a challenge for technical director and Englishteacher Mr. Addison who, along with the technical crew of students, builta fantastic set that extended from floor to ceiling. Another challenge this showproduced was the required use of prosthetic facial pieces and extensivemakeup for the Witch and the Wolf (photos can be seen in this issue of TheProphet)! However, none of these challenges proved too great for this talentedcast and crew, and they pulled off the show beautifully.PAC Awards were held May 8 in the UC auditorium to honor thegreat achievements of the students this year and to announce next year’s productions.33 students, both cast and crew, received some form of recognitionfor their hard work and dedication to PAC 2008-2009 season. Some notablehonors included the Outstanding New Member Award: Justine Mujica ’10 andMaeve Lynskey ’12; the Into the Woods Director’s Award: Kelly Dyckman ’09and Bobby Dyckman ’12; and the Incorruptible Director’s Award: Jenna Lloyd’09. Also, the new PAC Executive Board was installed: Jordan Morrisey ‘10,President; Greg Gedman ‘10, Vice President; Colleen Cassidy ’11, Secretary;Florianne Jalac ’10, Treasurer; and Conor McDonough ’10, Historian. The most exciting part of the night was the announcement of nextyear’s shows. ButUCPAC would not be able to function without theefforts of the UC tech crew; this year’s productionof Into the Woods is one example.“[Into the Woods] was definitely the mostchallenging show I’ve ever done,” said JennaLloyd ’09, a tech member of four years.Four-year veteran Greg Cassidy ’09agreed. “The set for [the show] was my favoriteof all the spring shows. This show was a ton ofwork, but it all paid off in the end.”Tech crew is notorious for its demandingschedule. “Tons of hours were spent designingand building the set, plus figuring out lights andsounds,” said Greg Gedman ’10. Moreover, Costumecrew is responsible for designing and findingcostumes for the entire cast in the basementof the school, where there are dozens of containersfilled with costumes of UCPAC’s past. Whatcannot be found by the crew must be made.“Making costumes was a lot more challengingthat I actually thought, but it was a lot offun!” said Caroline Nucatola ’11.What is unique about UCPAC tech crewis that everything is made by the students.“When it comes to getting things done, leadershipis a must,” said Gedman. “Without leadership, nothing would get done, and that would bea disaster.”Tech is not all about work, however.“Spending so much time with the same group ofpeople, working together, makes us all cometogether as some sort of dysfunctional family,”said Lloyd. THE PROPHET 4IS JSA FOR YOU? Aaron PinkardDO YOU FIND YOURSELF SITTING home alone after schoolwishing you had someone to discuss political and world problemswith? Are you tired of talking about foreign affairs andgovernment with your goldfish? Then, the Junior Statesmen ofAmerica (JSA) is the club for you! And a chapter will be formingthis fall at UC.JSA is a 75-year-old organization that is run mostly bystudents. On high school campuses across the world, there arestudents concerned with what is happening around themstudentswho are interested in politics and government, foreignaffairs, the law, and education.JSA is so unique because students organize everyaspect of the organization, all the way from chapter level tostate and national administration. The organization is composedof ten territories that together form the national organization. The territories of Arizona, Pacific Northwest, NorthernCalifornia, Southern California, Texas, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast,Mideast, Ohio River Valley and Florida Territory are separateentities with separate governments, each with its own constitution.New Jersey is in the Mid-Atlantic. (continued on page 7)THINGS TO LIKE ABOUTOBAMAJamie CioconNOW THAT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA has the most importantseat in the oval office for the next four years, we ought toget used to him and learn to like him. Aside from his take onpolitical issues that put us to sleep, here are four things thatwe, as American teenagers, should appreciate about PresidentObama: He is a family man. The president frequently joins his family— wife Michelle and daughters Malia, ten, and Sasha, eight — to walk their Portuguese water dog, Bo, on theWhite House lawns. He also takes time out of his scheduleas the leader of the free world to eat and spend time withhis family and put his daughters to bed every night. He believes in democracy. He sets out for a “more civiltone in our politics” by offering the public a sense of “howI’m thinking about a problem, how I’m making decisions… and a sense that they’ve been heard,” Obama said in arecent interview with Newsweek. By making the publicfeel part of politics, he practices the true meaning of democracy. His goal for the war in the Middle East remains clear.“President Obama knows that troops should be deployedfor a reason,” said Jordan Morrisey ’10. “The troops arenecessary to stop the terrorism at its source so that anotherevent like 9/11 could be prevented.” He stays grounded despite his rise to fame. He likes StarTrek (and can do the Vulcan symbol with his hand). Hestops at Five Guys for a cheeseburger at lunchtime. He letthe country in on his picks for the NCAA Men’s BasketballChampionship (and was wrong). He pokes fun at hisstatus as president, noting that “dating will be an issue[for his daughters] because I have men with guns surroundingthem at all times.” He is still a regular person, just like the rest of us; therefore, everyone should givehim a chance.SWINE FLU: DEADLY ORAlexa FeeOVEREXPOSED?SINCE IT WAS FIRST DETECTED in April, there have been newstories running in the special reports about the novel influenzaA, also known as H1N1 virus or swine flu. The question iswhether or not the swine flu is “novel” enough for special reports. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, orCDC, published a press release on its website on May 15. DeputyDirector of Media Relations Dave Daigle and Doctor DanJernigan both address the swine flu pandemic. According toDaigle and Jernigan, the H1N1 virus continues to circulate in theUnited States, as well as other countries. As of May, 22 U.S. statesreported hospitalizations because of influenza, and roughly 34countries around the world have reported cases as well. However, according to the CDC, it is uncertain how severe this outbreakwill be in terms of illnessand death compared to the otherinfluenza viruses. While the numbers arefrightening, the fact is that theswine flu itself is not much differentfrom seasonal flu. It spreadsthe same way as seasonal flu butdoes not have the same infectionrates. In the press release,Jernigan explained that“between seven percent and tenpercent of the U.S. populationeach year gets influenza, whichis maybe 21 million to thirty millionpeople a year,” while thenumber of people with swine fluThe swine are taking toomuch unnecessary heat forthe H1N1 virus.are “upwards of one hundred thousand.” In addition, FluView, aweekly routine influenza surveillance system reporter, showsthat there has been an increase in multiple types of flu, as well asswine flu. Jernigan agrees that the numbers of people with swineflu could have been affected by this spike in cases of otherstrands of flu, seasonal flu among them.Scientists agree that swine flu is not more “threatening”than seasonal flu. The difference is that swine flu has becomesensationalized in a way that seasonal flu is not. It is uncertainwhat the outcome of the “pandemic” will be, but as of now, it canbe said that the flu will continue to spread. But by following theproper health precautions, and staying calm, doctors also agreethat the swine flu will pass. As comedian Jim Carrey said, “Wewouldn't have swine flu if we had been nice to the pigs.”The reason why swine flu has gotten special attention isits rapid infection rate. By the time people had first heard of thenewest strand of influenza, there had been hundreds of cases, mostly reported in Mexico. By the middle of May, the CDC wasreporting 4,714 cases in 47 states, and at least four deaths. Thisincreased outbreak is due to the fact that people have not builtup any immunity to this strand of flu. Since there is currently novaccine either, people fear being infected. However, the CDC continues to explain that to preventcontraction of the swine flu, follow the same simple precautionsfollowed during seasonal flu season: wash hands, avoid contactwith people who show flu-like symptoms, and continue to takevitamins and other things that will promote good health.

On the Union Catholic website, Assistant Principleof Academics Noreen Andrews writes that "UnionCatholic High School strives to…foster the students'…standards of excellence within a value-centered education."But it is not just standards of excellence that are developed.UC also focuses on developing leadership withinthe students themselves. The best way to learn about leadership is to beplaced in a leadership role. “Being in roles of leadershiphelps students develop their potential,” said Mrs. Schurtz.Mrs. Schurtz is the director of the Peer Ministry program, areligious-based organization that promotes faith and interactionbetween students at UC. “They [learn to] work withteachers and other students to reach their goals for theyear.”Throughout high school, students are encouragedto join organizations and contribute in whatever ways theycan. For example, the Peer Coordinators (the leaders of theBig Brother/Big Sister mentoring program) are the oneswho run the programs offered to the incoming freshmen.During their meetings, junior and senior Coordinators areencouraged to speak up and offer ideas or give insight ondifferent things, and there is emphasis on the ideas comingfrom the students themselves. “[As directors] we ask, ‘whatdo you want to do?’” says Mrs. Schurtz. “There a differenttypes of leaders. Some are vocal, and are the ones who talkat every meeting and basically control the group. Thenthere are the quiet leaders, the ones who may only say oneor two things but provide insight or a good suggestion. We,as a group, need both of those types of leaders.”It is easy to become a leader in UC. Students canget involved in different programs for the school, like PeerMinistry, Big Brother/Big Sister, and the UC Ambassadors, who are the students who are sent to different grammarschools to talk about UC. Leadership opportunities are alsoavailable through clubs, like becoming the executiveboard of SMAC (Student’s Movement Against Cancer), oran executive officers of the Performing Arts Company. But in UC, leadership means setting a standard for theschool. “Setting an example in the school is important,”said Director of Recruitment Mr. Luciano. “Being put in aleadership role means [these students] have to set the examplefor their peers, especially the underclassmen.”The American Idol season eight finalewas full of surprises for everyone, especially for winner Kris Allen.

There is no age limit to the TVseries; moms and dads could even join in on the fun. Just sit backwith the family or chill with friends and have fun.

THE PROPHET 77 WAYS TO GO GREENArielle GonzalezSAVING THE ENVIRONMENT BY “GOING green” seems to be the new trend nowadays, and some may feel that turning a shadeof green may require too much effort. Fear not! Your friendly neighborhood Prophet is here to offer a helping hand! Light It Up! Change your incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (the ones in the shape of swirls). Notonly do they cut down on energy intake, but they also reduce electricity bills! Air Out! Instead of sticking wet clothes in an energy sucking dryer, why not hang dry them? This will not only cut down onthe electricity bills and the noise coming from obnoxious dryers, but air drying will keep clothes looking more like new andwill prevent shrinking! Reduce the Flow! Cutting down on shower time conserves precious water, uses less energy, AND cuts down on water andheating bills. Try to reduce time in the show to two minutes and remember to take showers and not baths! Hit the Streets! Whenever possible, avoid driving. Cars are a HUGE cause of excess carbon emission; they also waste fossilfuels – a nonrenewable resource – just to power themselves. Instead run, walk, bike, skate, or even unicycle everywhere. This will not only help save the planet, but will promote good personal health! Toss the Bottle! Put the bottled water down and no one, including the Earth, will get hurt! Plastic water bottles are NOT biodegradableand take up tons of space in landfills. Instead of buying the 24-pack from Costco, try buying one large reusablewater bottle and fill it up with filtered tap water – same great taste without the guilt! Go O’Natural! In terms of food that is. Pesticides are used on fruits, vegetables, eggs, and meats all the time, and they causeissues with the environment and may even harm people. Try to eat organic food whenever possible. Most foods are availablein some organic form so eat up and enjoy! Don’t Trash It! Avoid the garbage can at all cost. All of those garbage bags end up in a landfill that are now getting to thepoint where there is no more room for anymore trash. Reduce, reuse, and recycle anything and everything possible. Insteadof throwing that apple away, why not add it to a compost pile to help grow a personal garden? Remember to recycle plastic, paper, and aluminum always.JSA (continued from page 4)JSA allows for an exchange of ideas through studentdebates, talks, problem solving, and various governmentand leadership simulations. By participating in theactivities, each member gains a more intelligent and informedviewpoint. JSA also provides a wonderful chance tomeet and make friends with scores of other intelligent studentswho have similar interests.JSA is a national organization that is at the localchapter level. Collectively, the chapters form regionswhich coordinate communication with other chapters. Theregions form states which run three overnight conventionsa year. Conventions are major events that give students theopportunity to learn about the issues and exchange viewpointsin an open environment. Fall and Spring State conventionsoffer a wide range of topics and activities to engageand inform students. Activities that fill the days andafternoons conventions are debates, political speakers, thought talks, recent speakers, political fairs, simulations, and relaxing evening activities.JSA chapters serve as centers of political awarenessand activity on high school campuses around the nation.Students come to weekly meetings to discuss currentevents, debate controversial issues, and educate and involvethemselves in politics and government. A Junior StateChapter allows students to express their opinions in a comfortableenvironment and develop leadership skills. With all this to offer who would not want to join theJSA? This club helps educate students and provides studentsa medium to express their ideas. (continued from page 3)fall show for next year at the actual awards ceremony, but severalweeks later she declared Moon Over Buffalo as next year’s fall comedy!Mrs. Carolan commented on how this year’s cast had a level ofprofessionalism and talent that truly impressed her and that herchoice for the next musical reflected that. Next year’s show wasannounced to be Les Miserables, a famous show about the FrenchRevolution, love, and finding one’s place in the world; it recentlyfinished a successful revival run on Broadway. This show will proveto be a challenge, once again, because of the difficulty in vocal selections, but everyone cannot wait to see what next year will bring. Also announced at PAC Awards were the summer productions. The first is an original show written by alumnus John Rotondo’07 and Mrs. Carolan entitled Love Awkwardly. The show deals withdating, love, and friendship in high school and is based on the reallife stories of UC students. Carolan and Rotondo wanted to give arealistic view of teenage relationships and decided the best way todo that was to ask the students themselves to contribute their ideasand experiences, many of which are in the play either as cast membersor technical crew. The show centers on the lives of eightfriends who are all in their respective relationships and experiencethe trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The cast – consistingof Taziana Molinaro ’09, Greg Gedman ’10, Arielle Gonzalez ’10,Samantha Mellina ’10, Justine Mujica ’10,Conor McDonough ’10,Jordan Morrisey ’10, and Bobby Dyckman ’12 – will be working forseveral weeks to prepare the show that will run June 25, 26, and 27at 8:00 PM.PAC will also be hosting An Evening of One Acts, which willconsists of: Wanda’s Visit, All In the Timing, and Actor’s Nightmare. They will be directed by three UC alumni and will star several UCsophomores and juniors. The shows will take place the first weekendin August. For more information on the One Acts, contact Mrs.Carolan.

If you answered the 2009 Bamboozle Music Festival, you arecorrect. The two-day, rain or shine, annual event that occurs every first weekendin May has brought music lovers together since 2003. Despite the factthat the location has changed from the Asbury Park Convention Hall in AsburyPark, NJ to the Giants’ Stadium parking lot in East Rutherford, NJ, the people, the music, and the fun have all remained the same. This year, the headlinersincluded No Doubt and Fall Out Boy, along with numerous other supportingbands including Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, Third Eye Blind, DemiLovato, Silverstein, and a surprise performance by Journey. “Bamboozle is sochaotic that it becomes fun,” said Gina DeFalco ’10, who has attended Bamboozlefor the past three years. “The adrenaline you feel when you’re watchingthe bands you love perform with thousands of other people that feel thesame way is amazing.”If you are like most people, you go to Bamboozle prepared for twodays of seeing your favorite bands perform back-to-back. I, however, waslucky enough to not only enjoy two days of pure music, but to meet and interviewan up and coming band called Honor Society. The band, hailing fromthe Tri-State Area, is made up of lead singer Michael Bruno, bassist AndrewLee, keyboardist/guitarist/back-up vocalist Jason Rosen, and drummer AlexanderNoyes. About three hours after their 45 minute set on the Wonka Stage, the same stage where No Doubt would be playing later in the evening, theboys were kind enough to sit down with me for about twenty minutes. Theytalked about everything from how they met, to touring, to the defining question:East Coast or West Coast? The boys ofHonor Society(L to R): drummerAlex Noyes,guitarist/leadvocalist MichaelBruno, bassistAndrew Lee, andkeyboardist/guitaristJasonRosen“Jason and Igrew up together,”saidBruno. “We metone day in art class, and we decided that we wanted to make a band.Through a circle of friends we met Andrew and Jason, and then about twoyears ago, we met Alex and asked him to join the band.”Noyes, the former drummer of the Jonas Brothers, added onto thestory. “Mike actually called me one day while I was at the beach. He told meabout the band and asked me if I was interested. The rest is history, I guess.”It seems that Noyes joining the band was the turning point for themas a group. “When Alex joined the band,” continued Lee, “we made a commitmentto put all of our energy into making fans. We started posting videoson YouTube, getting in touch with people through MySpace, and just reallymade an effort to connect to fans.” So, Honor Society fans, send your thankyousto Alex Noyes the next time you see him.Honor Society takes pride in the fact that all of their songs were eitherwritten or co-written by members of the band. Some bands take inspirationfrom past relationships, friends, families, and other muses. Honor Societyis no different. “We write our songs based on our real lives,” said Noyes.“We live for life, you know? Good or bad. When we write our songs, we takepersonal experiences and amplify them. The Yankees and RedSox also do not have to worry toomuch about the defending AmericanLeague East champs, the Tampa BayRays, as they are struggling and are six games back. The season is looking good for Yankees fans becausethere really is no clear weakness on this team. They certainlyhave the caliber of talent worthy of competing for a world title;it is a matter of the team wanting it enough. THE PROPHET 10MISSION: TOWRITE LOVE ONHER ARMSAlexa FeeTHE PROPHET’S CHARITY SPOTLIGHT OF the issueis To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA). To WriteLove on Her Arms is a non-profit movement“dedicated to presenting hope and finding help forpeople struggling with depression, addiction, selfinjuryand suicide,” according to the TWLOHAwebsite (http://www.twloha.com). “TWLOHA existsto encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directlyinto treatment and recovery.”Founded in 2006, the organization beganas a group of friends trying to help their friendovercome her own depression. The founders wrotea story, titled “To Write Love on Her Arms,” about agirl who is suffering from depression and suicidalthoughts. She eventually seeks professional treatment,to overcome these thoughts. The movementitself raised money by selling tee shirts on theirMySpace websites;the moneyraised was contributedto thefriend’s treatment. It waswhen friends ofthe group andmembers of thebands Switchfootand Anberlinwore TWLOHAshirts and endorsingthegroup that thegroup gained widespread recognition. Since then, members of the bands Paramore, The Blackout,Mayday Parade and Panic at the Disco have endorsedthe organization, raising money and awarenessfor the charity.TWLOHA is the charity of the month becauseof their continued work with bands and otherorganizations to give hope to many in need. Accordingto the World Health Organization, about121 million people suffer from depression. Depressionoftentimes leads to substance abuse, a NationalInstitute of Mental Health (NIMH) study found, andstudies have shown that depression can also lead toacts of self injury and suicide. Since the NIMH hadfound that 18 million cases of depression are occurringin the United States, TWLOHA has become animportant part of many American teenagers’ lives. They continue to raise money and awareness, which all goes towards encouraging people to getprofessional help for their depression. For more information about TWLOHA, depression, suicide, or where to find help, visit theirwebsite (above).HONOR SOCIETY (continued frompage 8) we wrote the song ‘Don’t Close the Book’ when we weremovng out to [Los Angeles]. It’s saying that one chapter of our lives maybe closing, but we have to move on. We’ll never forget the previous chapter, though.” A successful song, according to Rosen, is one that has “lyricsthat another person can hear and then relate to in their own way. If a songmeans one thing to me,” he said, “it may mean something totally differentto someone else, and that’s exactly what we hope for.”Honor Society is currently recording their first studio album underthe management of the Jonas Brothers and their producers located inCalifornia. The boys officially moved to the West Coast late last year, butthey are still East-Coasters at heart. Bruno said he misses his friends andfamily, and especially their great fans on the East Coast. “They’ve beenwith us from the very beginning,” he said, “so we miss them when we’reaway.”Always the jokester, Noyes quickly broke the sentimental feeland said that he doesn’t really miss his family or friends; he misses hisdog, Willis. “It’s pretty easy to video chat with my friends and family,” hesaid. “But my dog can’t do that.”The inevitable question that followed was expected and preparedfor. “East Coast or West Coast?” Iasked. Glancing around at each other, the boys cleverly responded withsmirks, “Weast Coast.”Fame throws a regular personinto to a world of big egos, pressures, and other factors that can make hatperson a celebrity- and may alsochange his attitude. Honor Society isvery aware of the fact that the mostimportant thing is to stay humble andto be appreciative of everything theyhave. The most important advice theycan give to bands that are just startingout “is to keep in mind why youchoose to play music. If you reallywant to be in a band, do it becauseyou love music, not because you hopeyou get famous. It shouldn’t make youany happier to play in front of onethousand people than it would to playin front of ten people.” Bruno addedDo you want to listen to somemusic by Honor Society? Ontheir MySpace page(myspace.com / honorsociety)you will find songs such as“See U in the Dark,” which isRosen’s favorite to performlive, and “Nobody Has toKnow,” which Bruno loves.Lee told me to look out for asong called “Full Moon Crazy”which, he said, “has a veryupbeat dance vibe which is funto perform in front of acrowd.” For touring information, check out the Jonas Brothers’dates under SummerTours, page 11.that “the most important thing is to cater to your fans. No matter how bigyou get, you have to remember that fans give you everything.” So fans,Honor Society truly appreciates where you’ve gotten them today and willnever forget any of you, no matter how big they get. This summer, Honor Society will be joining the Jonas Brothers andJordin Sparks on their first world tour. The tour, starting June 20 in Dallas,Texas, will continue on throughout the summer and into the fall. The boys’faces lit up with excitement as they talked about the tour. Andrew told methat “it’s going to be extraordinarily entertaining. It’s Honor Society,Jordin Sparks, and the Jonas Brothers traveling across the country. Therewon’t be a dull moment.” Noyes reminded me that “Honor Society, Jordin, and the Jonas Brothers are all coming out with brand new albums this summer, too. So everyone can look forward to new music all around.”After talking for about twenty minutes, I asked if there were anylast words they wanted to say to their fans. A collective, “Thank you foreverything; we love you so much,” was reiterated among the four. Finallysaying goodbye, the boys hugged and thanked me for taking time out tosit down and talk to them. It was clear that they are appreciative of everythingthat they have and everything that is coming their way. Watch outfor Honor Society, everybody; this is just the beginning.

Two of these creatures werethe Wolf and the Witch, played by Angelo Cerimele ’09 andTaziana Molinaro ’09 respectively, two characters whoseevil natures must expressed in their costume and makeup. The trick was that these characters changed once again; theactor who plays the Wolf must also play Cinderella’s Prince, and the Witch must become gorgeous! How is it possible toturn two high school actors into a big bad wolf, and a spellcasting witch, and then to a handsome prince and stunningsorceress? The answer was latex prosthetics, and professionalquality makeup that could be removed and addedwhen needed.
