Before the TestGrades 7 – 8Next steps for families of CTY Talent Search students2012 - 2013cty.jhu.edu/talent/testing

Before the TestAbove-grade-level testing: What is it?By Carol Mills, Ph.D.Above-grade-level testing is what makes CTY’s Talent Search and testing different from the testing that studentsusually encounter. Typically, students will take a test designed for a student his or her age or grade. This is true even for admission into a school’s gifted and talented program.I. Above-grade-level testing is useful for thefollowing reasons—1. Very bright students often perform at the top percentiles*on grade-level tests. When student score at thetop percentiles, the tests may be imprecise measures oftrue ability. Why? Because students with these scoreshave “hit the ceiling” of the test. The test can’t discernif the student has reached his or her level of ability, orif he/she could correctly answer even more difficultquestions.2. When students at the top percentiles take an abovegrade-leveltest, the resulting scores spread out into an(approximately) normal distribution. In other words, acurve develops, with most students performing at themiddle, and fewer at the low and high ends. This resulthighlights that students who originally scored at thetop percentiles on grade-level tests were not all the samewith respect to their abilities (or their academic needs).3. The higher ceiling of an above-grade-level test allowsus to “test the limits” of a student’s ability. For manyhighly able students, this is the first time that they cansee and appreciate the full extent of their own abilities.4. Above-grade-level testing identifies students with thehighest level of academic ability who have the greatestneed for advanced-level and fast-paced course work.II. More ways the tests are useful—Good standardized test scores are objective measures ofa child’s ability. They are not influenced by a teacher’sindividual perception of a student, the “good student”bias, or parental aspirations for their child. With respect to above-grade-level tests, research doneby the Center shows that strong scores on such testsare highly predictive of a student’s ability to succeed inadvanced-level courses. The SAT ® , in particular, is a highly reliable, valid indicatorof a student’s current level of academic ability. The SATassesses reasoning skills and all the more so for CTY’sstudents because most of our students take the SATbefore they have been exposed to the level of content onthe exam. Research studies conducted by CTY and theEducational Testing Service (ETS) confirm the reliability, validity, and appropriateness of the SAT for the studentsin our Talent Search.Similar research supports the validity and appropriatenessof the ACT and the School and College Ability Test(SCAT) for the students in CTY’s Talent Search.*CTY conducted its original research with students at the 97 th percentileor higher, and our Talent Search now includes students at the 95 thpercentile and higher.2

In May 1996, CTY purchased allrights to the SCAT from ETS and entered into an agreementwith Prometric to computerize the SCAT and make the testavailable at computer test centers.Because this is an above-grade-level test, after the test, you’ll receive information that shows how your child’s scorescompare to that of students in his or her grade as well asstudents in the higher grades for whom the test questionswere originally designed.TEST SECTIONS AND QUESTIONSThe SCAT test has two sections, verbal and quantitative. Each section contains 55 questions, including five unidentifiedexperimental items that do not count toward thestudent’s score. The verbal section measures a student’s understanding ofthe meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability. Verbalquestions are multiple-choice analogies, which require astudent to choose the best pair of words to complete ananalogy. Often, there may appear to be more than oneanswer that fits the analogy, but the correct answer is theone that best completes the analogy. The quantitative section measures a student’s understandingof fundamental number operations. The quantitativequestions are multiple-choice mathematicalcomparisons, which require a student to compare twomathematical quantities and determine which is greater.Problems are intended to measure mathematical reasoningability and thus often do not require computation.TEST TIMINGThe two sections are each 22 minutes long, with additionaltime for tutorials. They are separated by an optional,student-directed 10-minute break. “Student-directed”means that the test center administrator will not start andend the break. It is the student’s responsibility to return tothe test on time. If students take any other breaks during thetest, timing will continue. Your appointment time will be for90 minutes, but testing will usually take less than one hour. The maximum time for the test is 54 minutes, including theoptional break.Note: Parents must remain at the test center during testing.SCORINGThe SCAT scaled scores range from 400 to 516 dependingon the level the student takes. For more details on scoreranges, please visit cty.jhu.edu/talent/testing. The scaledscores are based on the number of questions the studentanswers correctly out of 50.12

Spatial ability is the ability to understand andremember the spatial relationships among objects, manipulateimages in space, and visualize how separate parts ofcomplex physical systems interrelate. This ability can beviewed as a unique type of intelligence, distinguishable fromverbal, mathematical, and other forms of intellectual talent. This test is designed primarily for students who have aninterest in, or demonstrated talents in, mathematical, computer, and scientific studies. However, it may also be ofinterest to students who excel in the arts and humanities, asit may reveal unrecognized talents.Along with an assessment of verbal, mathematical, andother forms of ability, the recognition of spatial abilityprovides a more comprehensive profile of talents that canbe used for academic and career planning.TEST SECTIONS AND QUESTIONS Visual Memory – Learning Phase (22 shapes):8 minutes Surface Development (30 questions): 12 minutes Block Rotation (20 questions): 9 minutes Visual Memory – Recall Phase (20 questions):8 minutes Perspectives (22 questions): 19 minutesTEST TIMINGEach subtest will be timed separately. Within the subtests, easy tasks will come first and more difficult ones later. Allitems are multiple choice, and each task will have onlyone correct solution. Students will have a timer indicatingthe time remaining in the subtest and should pace themselvesaccordingly, remembering that later questions aremore difficult. Students may also skip tasks in the subtestand return to them later. Students who wish to change ananswer to a question already completed may go back anddo so (only within the subtest). However, you may not movebetween different subtests—you may work on only onesubtest at a time.An appointment time at the test center will be for 2 hours;however, some students manage to take the test in under30 minutes. Testing times of more than 90 minutes are theexception.Note: Parents must remain at the test center during testing.SCORINGEach subtest is scored separately. Students will receive apercentile rank for each subtest. Students will also receivea scaled score from 200 – 800, which represents a totalor overall score for the test.
