Article 34To see if the town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Warner</strong>, New Hampshire will vote to adopt thefollowing resolution and upon adoption have our Select Board membersnotify in writing our Congressional delegates <strong>of</strong> said resolutionand vote:RESOLUTION:Whereas, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitutionmakes it clear that no person may be owned by another person;Whereas, a corporation lacks the limitations <strong>of</strong> a person, cannot beheld accountable in the same fashion as a person and is commonlyowned by a person or persons, a corporation is therefore not a person;Whereas, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution wasdesigned to protect the free speech rights <strong>of</strong> people and not the ability<strong>of</strong> corporations to buy political influence;Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5:4 ruling in Citizens United v. theFederal Election Commission, equating financial influence on the electoralprocess by corporations with free speech by individuals, constitutesa serious and direct threat to our democracy in that it removesthe last legal limits on corporate influence in politics;Whereas, the people <strong>of</strong> the United States have previously used theconstitutional amendment process to correct those egregiously wrongdecisions <strong>of</strong> the United States Supreme Court that go to the heart <strong>of</strong>our democracy and self-government;NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Warner</strong>, NewHampshire does not recognize corporate personhood or that corporationsare entitled to the protections or “rights” <strong>of</strong> Natural Human Beingsand calls on our elected representatives, Republican and Democratalike, in both state and federal government to amend the UnitedStates and New Hampshire Constitutions to declare that corporationsare not entitled to protections or “rights” <strong>of</strong> human beings and to declarethat the expenditure <strong>of</strong> corporate money is not a form <strong>of</strong> constitutionallyprotected speech.BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Warner</strong> New Hampshirecalls on other communities and jurisdictions to join this effort by passingsimilar Resolutions, applauds actions consistent with this resolutionbeing taken in congress and elsewhere and stands in solidaritywith other individuals and communities across the nation currentlyengaged in this effort.
