====================R5041 : page 184SOME INTERESTING QUESTIONSAPPLIES TO THE BEGOTTEN ONESQuestion.--To whom do the words in Heb. 6:4-6 apply--"It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakersof the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Wordof God, and the powers of the world [Age] to come, ifthey shall fall away, to renew them again untorepentance"?Answer.--The conditions mentioned in the passageabove quoted are all more or less intertwined. That is tosay, the one who has been made partaker of the heavenlygift of justification is sanctified, begotten of the HolySpirit; for only in that way can he get God's evidencerespecting his justification. No one is justified by merelybelieving that Jesus lived or that Jesus died. In order tocome to the point of justification and have the merit ofChrist imputed, he must previously have presented hisbody a living sacrifice; and faith in the Lord Jesus mustaccompany this presentation.Anyone having done all in his power--having turnedfrom sin, having believed in Jesus as the Redeemer, andhaving presented his body a living sacrifice--must nextreceive the imputation of Jesus' merit to make up hisshortcomings, to cover his blemishes, in order that theHeavenly Father may be able to accept the sacrifice; forno imperfect thing can come upon the altar of the Lord.It requires the merit of Christ to make good what islacking in the one who presents himself in sacrifice; andonly those who thus believe and present their bodies insacrifice are the recipients of Christ's merit by imputation;and only such are begotten of the Holy Spirit.God's arrangement is that no one can be justified unlesshe has made a full consecration, after having alreadyturned from sin. Christ would not impute His merit toany except such as make this full consecration; and theFather would not accept by begetting with the Holy Spiritany others than those who have done so.Those who have received justification have at theR5041 : page 185same time received the begetting of the Holy Spirit, whichis "the power of the Age to come." The falling away ofsuch, the Apostle says, would mean that they could neverbe renewed again. Why? Because they have had theirshare of the blessing of Christ. Christ's death was tobring a blessing--and only one--to every member ofAdam's race--one full blessing, a complete blessing, such
