In referring to others, speak as sympatheticallyas possible, endeavoring to make apologiesand allowances rather than to condemn, which is not ourprovince. Avoid so far as possible all discussion of theimmortality of the soul, the Trinity and our Lord's presence.The time may yet come for wrangling over these things,but we believe it has not yet arrived. Take your cue,please, from the DAWNS, TOWERS and sermons, and besure to make your statements less rather than more pungentand specific. The people are prejudiced along theselines. Experience shows that they can be much betterreached otherwise, and after they come to understandother matters of the Truth--when these matters so difficultfor them become easy.(2) By precept, as well as by example, you can helpall of the dear friends along the lines mentioned andR5040 : page 184help the Cause much. The Truth has suffered more fromthe unwisdom of its friends than from anything its enemieshave said.(3) Continue to give my love to all the dear Classesand individuals in the Truth as you meet them. I loveto think of you all as in a measure representatives ofmyself as well as of the Lord, and I believe that thefriends get most good from the Pilgrim visits when theyview them from this standpoint. Usually, except on Sundays,you will have plenty of time aside from the meetingsto look after the lame, halt, blind and sick of the "sheep"--to carry them crumbs of comfort, to help bind up theirwounds, or to encourage them in the good way. I trustthat this opportunity for service is not neglected. It isone of the most important. Sometimes a dear "sheep"will become entangled and cease to attend the meetings.It is a part of your shepherding work to look after justsuch cases--to hunt them up and to help them back tofellowship if possible, or, failing in this, to encouragethem to remain loyal to the Lord whatever their outwardconditions.(4) As representatives of the Society, the friends willnaturally inquire of you respecting the Colporteur work,the Volunteer work, etc., or, if they fail to ask and you seeno activity along these lines, it would be your duty andprivilege to bring up the question and inquire to whatextent the service of the Lord is going forward. Makeinquiries about Classes where they have a surplus of talentand encourage the Class Extension work. Keep in memorythat you are not speaking for yourself merely norespecially, but that you are the Society's representativeand, above all, along this line in your present work, theLord's representative. Be careful, therefore, that yourcounsels shall be encouraging and helpful, being not carelesslygiven.(5) As you go to the various homes please give the
