R5027 : page 162taught that they had mistaken the Divine intention--hadmistranslated the Law of the Sabbath. On several occasionsHe healed the sick on the Sabbath Day. Indeed,the majority of His healings were done on that day,greatly to the disgust of the Pharisees, who claimed thatHe was a law-breaker in so doing. We cannot supposethat Jesus performed these miracles to aggravate thePharisees; rather we are to understand that their SabbathDay typified the great Sabbath of blessing and healing--the antitypical Sabbath which is in the future--theperiod of the Messianic reign and the healing of allearth's sorrows.Jesus clearly pointed out to the Scribes and Phariseesthat they were misinterpreting the meaning of theDivine arrangement, that God did not make man merelyto keep a Sabbath, but that He had made the Sabbathfor, in the interest of, mankind. Hence everythingnecessary for man's assistance would be lawful on theSabbath Day, however laborious it might be. Indeed,Jesus carried the thought still farther and pointed out toHis hearers the absurdity of their position--for, he said,if any of you should have an ox or an ass fall into the piton a Sabbath Day, would you leave him to die and thussuffer loss, as well as allow the animal to be in pain?Assuredly they would not, and assuredly they would bejustified in helping any creature out of trouble on thatday. Then said Jesus, If so much might be done for adumb creature, might not a good work of mercy and helpfor mankind be properly enough done on the SabbathDay?THE SEVENTH DAY STILL A SABBATHA mistake made by many Christians is the suppositionthat the Law Covenant which God made with Israelceased, passed away. On the contrary, as the Apostledeclares, "The Law hath dominion over a man so longas he liveth." The Jewish Law is as obligatory upon theJew today as it was upon his fathers in the days of Moses.Only death could set the Jew free from that Law Covenantuntil, in God's due time, it shall be enlarged andmade what God, through the Prophet, styles a New Covenant--a New Law Covenant. That will take place justas soon as the Mediator of the New Covenant shall havebeen raised up from amongst the people. That Prophetwill be like unto Moses, but greater--the antitype. ThatProphet will be the glorified Christ--Jesus the Head andthe completed Church, who are frequently spoken of asmembers of His Body, and sometimes styled the Bride,the Lamb's Wife. This antitypical Mediator (Acts 3:22,23),under the New Law Covenant which He willthen establish, will assist the Jews (and all who comeinto harmony with God through Him) back to that humanperfection in which they will be able to keep the Divine
