It was equallymanifest that by the time of the close of the meetingmost of this disposition had faded away; the faces wereearnest--many of them markedly sincere. They heardthe Bible defended and Christianity upheld with more ofan appeal than ever before to the Bible, as well as toreason. Nearly 200 requested literature, expressing a desireto study further the matter which they had heard--some of them expressing deep concern.Five other less important places were visited and meetingsheld ereWE REACHED MADRASIn Madras we had very interesting experiences also.Three meetings were held in different localities, all ofthem crowded. Nearly three hundred applications forliterature were handed in. It was while in this vicinitythat we visited the Mount of Saint Thomas, where, accordingto tradition, the Apostle Thomas, as before referred to,suffered martyrdom by a spear-thrust at the hands of aBrahmin.THE VIZAGAPATAM MISSIONWe had an interesting visit to Vizagapatam, whichhas a mission now under the control of the Canadian Baptists,having been transferred to them by the LondonMissionary Society. A public meeting was held in thechapel and we attended. The missionary and his wifewere present, and also two men and two women, nativeR5014 : page 135teachers or workers. It was Quarterly Meeting Day, andabout six boys and six girls repeated Scripture verses,committed to memory, in the presence of an audience ofabout forty adults. These missionaries and teachers--yea, and all missionaries--have the sympathy of the Committee,for we realized that they have a difficult proposition--an impossible one, so far as the conversion ofthe world is concerned.CALCUTTA--CITY OF PALACESSome of us journeyed from Madras to Calcutta, whileanother passed through the Mysore District to Bombay.All of our experiences were interesting. We were impressedwith the fact that while the natives respect thewhites as a superior race, they are perplexed with someof their religious teachings, and inclined to think thatmany professing Christianity are only partially sincere inprofessing such beliefs--for instance, Mohammedanscannot receive the "Doctrine of the Trinity."
