not do good to win applause for himself. Whatever hedoes in the way of charities, or in visiting the sick, etc.,he will prefer to do it in an unostentatious manner, makingas little show about his good deeds as possible. Consequently, the result will be beneficial to himself and toR4993 : page 97the person to whom he ministers, for he does these thingsfor the glory of God.HOW THE WORLD CAN GLORIFY GODThe latter part of the text says, "and glorify yourFather which is in heaven." It was not the Master'sexpectation that the little light which the disciples wouldlet shine would have a convincing effect upon the world, and that they would all fall down and bow before theFather. Even if the whole world knew about the narrowway, only a few would be willing to undertake to walkin it. Therefore the Lord hides these things from theworld, and reveals these secret things respecting the great"high calling" to the meek, to the humble, to thoseto whom the knowledge would be most advantageous. How do the world, then, glorify the Father whichis in heaven? How would men glorify our Father? Weanswer that there is a difference between vicious, worldlypeople and well-meaning worldly people. We are inclinedto believe that the majority of mankind, who are in alienationfrom God and who have no ear to hear the messageof the "narrow way," have, nevertheless, an appreciationof righteousness. And if without too much cost theycould be righteous, just, generous and all that would benoble, as represented in perfect humanity, they would liketo be so. Many of the world have an appreciation ofnobility in others. They would like to have it themselves. The difficulty is that the cost of righteousness is morethan they are willing to pay. This class say, "We approve the righteous way, but atthe present time it is too difficult. To walk in it wouldmean the blighting of all our hopes and prospects. Wewould have to consider whether we could make suchtransactions as would bring us prosperity. These thingsare too difficult now. If there was just as much rewardto do right as to do wrong, we would prefer it. We honorGod. We honor the principles of righteousness. We seesome of the principles of righteousness exemplified inthese peculiar people. They are of God. We appreciatethese things. Indeed, it is the ideal life. They glorifyGod. Evidently God is a righteous God; and we hope Hewill not do too much harm to us. But we cannot let goof the things of this world. Perhaps we may becomesaints before we die. Who knows?" So they have theidea that they will be neither too saintly, nor too bad!ST. PAUL'S LIGHT SHONE BEFORE RULERS
