if possible; all partisanship should be ignored. Since theyare not condemning any one to eternal torment, nor judginghim in any way, their advice must not carry with itany penalty whatever. They are merely advising thebrother that his conduct is contrary to the Scriptures;and that if he does not change his course, they cannotlonger treat him as one of the Lord's people.In disfellowshipping him, they are not to ill-treat him;for we do not act so with publicans and sinners. But wewould not ask a publican or a sinner to take part in theservice, either as an Elder or as a Deacon or in anyother capacity; so the offending brother is not to beasked to offer prayer, or to do anything that an outsiderwould not be asked to do. Thus the congregation wouldwithdraw their fellowship. He is a brother still, but notin the best of standing; for he has neglected to hear thevoice of the brethren in the way that the Lord hasdirected.It might be possible, however, for a whole class togo astray in its judgment in a matter, and to decideagainst a brother who was in the right. This brothermight then say, "My dear brethren, I appreciate yourview in this matter; and I am sorry that anything in mycourse should seem to be worthy of condemnation. Ipromise you that I will modify the matter as best I amable.
