which is sinful and unsatisfactory. There seemsto be in every man, naturally, without any education onthe subject, something which tells him that he is not perfect;that he is not in full accord with his own conscience, not in accord with his own highest ideals of theDivine mind. All religions, therefore, recognize this principle of sinand propose remedies therefor. We see the evidence ofthis as manifested in their disciples everywhere. Manyseek to crucify the flesh in one form or another--someby flagellations, some by restraints upon the various libertiesof life, some by holding their hands in the air fordays, seeking to become holy and thus appease their god.But none of these things, in the light of the Gospelof Christ, seem to be the highest and noblest ideals.Doubtless all have done some good and uplifted somemen out of the degradation in which they were. Mankindmight have been worse off if it had not been for thesereligions. But now, if we compare these with the religion ofJesus Christ, we believe everything is to be said in favorof the religion of Christ. In the first place, all thesereligions more or less resemble the Jewish religion, whichis of God, and hence all these religions are more or lessin harmony with God's proposition.God's proposition to the Jews was, "Do these thingsand ye shall live," have everlasting life. And they found also that the Law, insteadR4982 : page 76of perfecting, justifying them, and giving themeternal life, brought to them a greater realization of sinthan they ever had before. And this was the real blessingof the Law Covenant--it showed them their sinful conditionand their inability to lift themselves out of it.But the Jews do not recognize that great fact today, forif they did they would be crying to God for mercy insteadof hoping to keep the Law and thus justifythemselves. The same thing might be said to be true of all theheathen religions. All offer help by which mankind maymake themselves perfect, but none are able to make themselvesperfect, and they all realize that they are sinnersand imperfect to the last degree. There is, therefore,
