sympathetic. We should remember that all of the Lord'speople are fallen according to the flesh, but are NewCreatures in Christ; and, if they be New Creaturesin Christ, they must have the mind of the Lord anddesire to glorify Him. Any of the brethren givinga reproof from this point of view would recognizethat the person reproved had not bad intentions, andwould explain as gently and kindly as possible what arethe real facts. A reproof of this kind should not begiven suddenly; and the person reproving should judgeof the punishment to be given and of the proper time, etc., as of the Lord. Thus should any one that isrighteous do in administering reproof to another. Itshould be done only after careful consideration andprayer, and after having arrived at the conclusion thatthis is the best possible way to help the brother or thesister. If all reproof were given under such conditionswe may readily suppose that it would be much more helpfulthan is the usual reproof.CRUSHING REPROOF IS UNRIGHTEOUSThe expression, it "shall not break my head," wouldmean that a reproof should not be disastrous, not becrushing, but it should be an anointing or blessing. And only those should be chosen as Elders whoare men of moderation, men of development, men whohave learned to control their own lives and their owntongues, so that they would not crush, but that their rebukewould be helpful and intended to draw the personnearer to the Lord, and to be encouraging and helpfulgenerally."REBUKE NOT AN ELDER"When St. Paul instructed Timothy not to rebuke anElder, but to entreat him as a father, the Apostle did notrefer to an Elder of the congregation, but a person olderthan one's self. Do not rebuke a person older than yourself.Treat him as a father; likewise the elder women asmothers; and the younger men as brothers, and theyounger women as sisters. In other words, an Elder isnot appointed in the Church to brow-beat or to trampledown the liberties of others. The spirit of kindness, gentleness, etc., is the Holy Spirit. If an Elder rebukes inanother spirit than this, he should remember that the person
