------------------------------ Message from the Principal ------------------------------Dear Parents,Each day continues to be an exciting and productive day of learning and adventure at C. D. <strong>Hylton</strong> Senior <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>! I would liketo thank my committed staff, outstanding students, supportive parents, business partners, and community for their collaborative effortsin ensuring that our school is committed to excellence in all areas. It is evident that we all work hard daily to support our school’stheme, “We are Family – Working Together for Total Success.” This also holds true for our school’s focus, “Challenged toExcellence—Raising the Standards.” I am pleased to congratulate our English 11 teachers and students for their continued success onthe research paper. <strong>Hylton</strong>’s pass rate of 98% of submitted papers continues our tradition of excellence. Thank you toMrs. Weiler, administrator for the language arts department; Mrs. Davis, language arts department chairperson; the English 11 teachers;the librarians; and the parents of our eleventh graders for assisting our students to achieve success on this graduation requirement.This is just another example of the hard work and commitment of our staff, students, and parents. Additionally, I commend all ourstudents for adhering to our school’s high expectations for academic achievement, attendance, and appropriate behavior.Our <strong>Hylton</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> family is delighted to congratulate Mrs. Dory McAllister, department chairperson for our SpecialEducation department and also Major Shelia Allen, instructor, AFJROTC Program. Mrs. McAllister was selected as the DaleCity Teacher of the Year and Major Allen was selected as the VFW Post 7916 2009-10 Teacher of the Year. We congratulate them onreceiving these very prestigious awards.The school year is passing quickly. This time of the year means several things to all of us. As we return from spring break,underclassmen will have 52 school days left. Their last day of school is June 18. For seniors, Class of <strong>2010</strong>, there will be 46 schooldays left. We are all excited about celebrating graduation exercises on June 12. Additionally, we are diligently preparing for SAT/ACTTesting, SOL Testing, Advanced Placement Exams, Prom, and second semester examinations.I congratulate the coaches and players of our Winter Sports Teams on a great season. They displayed teamwork, good sportsmanship,and represented our school in an exemplary manner. Center for International Studies and Languages (CISL)“An integrated curriculum of learning’Foreign Exchange and TravelSpring is here and time for travel opportunities to become a reality for many <strong>Hylton</strong> students! After a successful first October visitwhen <strong>Hylton</strong> welcomed 20 Lycée Montchapet students from Dijon, France, we now have six <strong>Hylton</strong> students traveling to Dijonto stay with families and experience the French way of life. Eight students are also traveling to Verona, Italy, for an exchangeexperience with the Einaudi <strong>School</strong>. Bon voyage and Buon Viaggio to all our <strong>Hylton</strong> travelers! Special thanks to the chaperones andorganizers of these travel opportunities: Mrs. Meg Holt, Ms. Stacy Smith, Ms. Claudia Deferre and Mrs. Dory McAllister.In December we said Aufwiedersehen to four German exchange students from our sister school in Dorfen. They all had an amazingexperience and were sad to leave after seven weeks enrolled in classes at <strong>Hylton</strong>. <strong>Hylton</strong>’s German teacher, Frau Amy Anderton,will be accompanying the <strong>Prince</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>County</strong> group of students going to Dorfen this summer.Visitors from ChinaIn January and February, we welcomed first of all a group of school administrators and then a group of students with theirprincipal from Beijing, China. The students enjoyed their day at <strong>Hylton</strong>, going into classes and then talking about their countrywith CISL students at the February student meeting.CISL Conference: Connecting with the World – People, Places, Language and CultureThe major March event for CISL students, families and the community was CISL’s own annual conference on Saturday, March 6.We welcomed over 250 participants for a day filled with international awareness for everyone. Our keynote speaker was Dr. AlFuertes who is Assistant Professor at New Century College, George Mason University, and Faculty Director of the GMU GlobalEducation Program in the Philippines. Dr. Al Fuertes is a recipient of the 2008 GMU Teaching Excellence Award and the 2001AT&T Asia-Pacific Leadership Award. Dr. Fuertes specializes in community-based trauma healing as an integral component inpeace-building and conflict transformation. He travels extensively around the world, particularly in places affected by war, armedconflict, and natural disaster. We also welcomed Mocko Jumbie ‘stilts dancer’, Mr. Willard John. The audience was enthralled byhis appearance on stage in his full colorful attire and on 7ft stilts.Other sessions and presenters included <strong>Hylton</strong> faculty members, students and members of the community:An Ting An Ting – Ms. Janice Graham; Bolivia: Many Nations Within One Country – Mrs. Karen B. The nextBoosters meeting is Monday, <strong>April</strong> 12.CISL Celebration BanquetOn Thursday, May 27, at 6:45 p.m. in the enclosed cafeteria, we honor in particular our CISL graduates and foreign exchangestudents. ESOL NewsESOL staff, with the assistance and cooperation of <strong>Hylton</strong><strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> faculty, administered the ACCESS WIDAAssessment for ESOL students, a test for Englishproficiency, in <strong>April</strong>. All ESOL students at <strong>Hylton</strong>,including those on monitor status, were tested. The fourtests assessed progress in the reading, listening, writing andspeaking components. This massive effort included theadministration of 680 tests over a two-week period. Resultsare due in June.ESOL Summer <strong>School</strong> will provide free opportunities totake classes in the summertime. Usually courses includeEnglish 10, a science, two maths and two social studies. Thescholarship recipients will be students who have goodattendance, good grades and good conduct. The summer isa perfect time to take required courses for graduation.Ms. Millner’s class finished the English 11 Research paperand they are waiting for the results. They have also takenthe SOL Writing and SOL Reading tests. All of these arerequired for graduation. Most of the English 11 studentsalso take US/VA History with Mr. Fox and they went on afield trip to the Holocaust Museum in March.Another successful PEP program has come to an end.Parents learned about the customs and culture of theAmerican school system over a 20 class meetings. Somehighlights were the celebration of Dr. Seuss, computerliteracy for parents, Thanksgiving dinner at Saunders Middle<strong>School</strong>.Several students are on <strong>Hylton</strong> spring sports teams. Theyinclude:Varsity Soccer: Francisco Espinal Ferman, Oscar DiazSolis, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Bryan Miranda. JV Soccer:Julio Funes, Richmand Gyamfi, Andres Hernandez,Miguel Hernandez, Nate Ohemeng. The 1 st week of March was National ForeignLanguage Week. The department sponsored a number ofactivities. For the first time the department held a WorldLanguage Idol concert. Participants were required toperform in a foreign language. Madame Choi organized thisevent and the judges were Mr. Dambowic, Mr. DeWitt andMr. <strong>William</strong>s. The winners of the idol competition were:FIRST PRIZE: Lydia Mockabee SECOND PRIZE:Mimi Ong-Ante and THIRD PRIZE: Alex Caliga andTyler HalbersenAs in previous years, a poster contest was held to celebrateForeign Language Week. Counselors then met individually in March with all of their students to finalize course selection.Students and parents will have access through Edulink to the final course selection in early <strong>April</strong>, and will have until thedeadline of May 21 to make any changes for next year by contacting their school counselor. Following this deadline, changeswill be made only for errors or for unsuccessful completion of pre-requisite courses. Mr. Booker wowed the crowd with a consistent theme—a throwback to the earlypart of the 20th century. His piano and vocal rendition of Summer Time impressed the crowd. The first Runner-up wasConnor Smith whose talent was a stand-up comedy act and the 2nd Runner-up was Sam Harmon who sang Fly Me to theMoon. The members of the NHS thank you for your support for the Mr. <strong>Hylton</strong> Show. A major part of the proceeds will goto Oxfam to support Haitian earthquake relief.NHS Seniors will receive a letter in early May indicating their standing as we prepare for graduation.
