I thought that was very clever and in fact spoke to the boys about it at the last assembly.Lent is often associated with sacrifice and giving up. I’m sure lots of families have spoken aboutwhat they as a whole or what individuals will give up for Lent. As well as giving up, taking upis just as important and maybe a bit more challenging for people. Taking up actions includebeing more prayerful, doing good works, putting the needs of others before our own and soon. Regardless of whether we give up or take up this lent our focus is about becoming betterChristians, better people.Well done and thanks to Year 9 and Year 11 boys on last week’s Bungarra Challenge andRetreats. I’m happy to write that the feedback from both experiences was very positive, despitethe rain at the end of the week. My sincere thanks to the many staff who attended these eventsand to the staff back at school who had to take replacement classes. We can’t hold events likeBungarra or the retreats without the generous involvement of staff.Happy Canberra Day to all for Monday. I trust you all have the chance to enjoy a relaxing longweekend.May St Marcellin continue to watch over our boys and their families.Enews DocumentsRichard and Roma Flynn Music BursaryApplication FormYours sincerelyMr Richard SidorkoHeadmasterGolf Day InformationCareers NewsFollow us on Facebookand Twitter!Together,in explorationSubmissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au

Marist college enews - MARCH 6, 2013Bungarra ChallengeFootsteps 2013 has started off with great success with the studentstaking on the challenges presented to them with great resilience. Theyear 9 students took on several different experiences from raft building, abseiling and rock climbing, walking to the top of Kosciuszko and forsome the first time on a mountain bike or river sled. The Bungarra program allows students to engage in a variety of activitiesthat are adventure based, they were expected to make their own lunchand cook most of their meals by themselves, with supervision. Theexperience has given students a great chance to learn how far they canpush themselves and recognise their strengths and weaknesses.Though the weather wasn’t the best all the time, the students took it intheir stride and made the camp one of the most successful Bungarra tooccur in its 5 year history. The students thrived in the wet conditionsand completed all activities required. The final day saw the skies start to clear and with great teamworkand communication Othmar won the Footsteps trophy for Bungarra!Congratulations boys!Thank you to the staff on camp for their efforts and support to thestudents. The success of the camp relied heavily on teacherscommitmentduring the week: Mr. Nasca, Mr Sullivan, Mr Moran, Mr McDonald, Mrvan de Waterbeemd, Ms Weijers, Mr Cooper, Mr Gavran and Mr Boyton.Simon RugalaSubmissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au

So muchwork has already been given, for example our ‘iBelieve’ placemats (iBelieve is the Collegetheme for this year) and we have been challenged in Maths, English, Religion and manytests! We have also been working on the symbols that make up the Australian flag: TheUnion Jack, Southern Cross and the Federation Star. We’re also designing posters aboutthe beautiful Australian flag. This term we have been learning the basics of aboriginalartwork, it is really interesting. It is like a language using pictures really - just amazing! Our new classroom was originally the computer lab so we’ve been trying to work with afew renovations going on around us. This term we have had some rather exciting thingshappen. We got our Term One class captains; Alex Haseler and Liam Howard. They havebeen great. We have also had our Marist Junior school swimming carnival. Everyone hada great time and had lots of fun. Hartigan won the swimming carnival at the end of theday. 6S hopes to look forward to a great rest of the year!By Thomas Gellatly 6SSubmissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au

The annual doorknockis one of their most important fundraisers, so a group ofboys led by Ryan Dix (12CO) got together to help out. Itwas a mix of grey and blue shirts, and after afternoon tea at the College, theyset out in the Marist minibus, driven by Mr Stinziani, to pound the footpathsand knock on doors. They all got back on the bus with stories to laugh aboutof residents hiding behind doors, ignoring the doorbell, and barking dogs. Butthey also had many stories of being welcomed, of generosity and of the feelingthat comes from doing good deeds. As well as this group, there were otherboys who volunteered in their own parishes. The St Vincent de Paul Societywere very grateful for the help the boys gave, and we hope this will be the startof a tradition of Marist organising to help with the doorknock. The boys involved were:Ryan Dix (12CO)Sajana Abeygunawardena (12OT)Jeremy Rooke (12OT)Campbell Hall (12PA)Shae Darcy (12PA)Ben Vanzwol (12DA)Jonathan Leyton (12CO)Byron Miller (12PA)Sam Byrne (12OT)Connor Luck-Cameron (12OT)Jack Horton (12MA)Jack Radulovich (9OT)Jordie Stuart (8OT)Patrick Ellis (8OT)Henry Cooney (8OT)SOLIDARITY IN ACTIONOLD BOY LLYWELLYN O’BRIENWe have received a letter from Llywellyn O’Brien, whograduated from Marist College Canberra in 2012.He was the Haydon Service Captain, MJ&S and HumanRights Group President, and continues to be a wonderfulambassador for Marist in the wider world. Please click here to read Llywellyn’s letterCLICK HERE TO READ VANNAK’s StorySubmissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au

Marist college enews - MARCH 6, 2013FaithFormationSolidarity PrayerLet us stop for 2 minutes, drop whatever we have in our hands, and think for one momentof the luxuries we actually do have. A home we can go to, a school with books and pencilsand pens, a car , maybe 2. Sport, music the list goes on. Now think about someone on theother side of the world who is the same age as you, with the same dreams and aspirations,to become a doctor, builder or teacher, the same passions, of sport and music. The onlydifference from you is he lives in a house as big as your bedroom with his 6 brothers andsisters, he can’t go to school because he is forced into working and he only eats once a day, simply a bowl of rice. Now as we go into this week, think again of how powerful it is to give that dollar to seesome teachers getting rolled in dodge ball or slammed in Table tennis.O God,Our creator and sustainer,We pray to you:We want to celebrate life.We cry out against all that kills life:Hunger, poverty, unemployment, sickness,Debt, repression, individualism,Abuse of the earth, injustice,And all other forms of slavery. We want to announce fullness of life:Work education, health, housing,Safe environment, bread for all.We want communion, solidarity,A world renewed. We hope against hope. With the God of history,WE want to make things new again.YOU can do something to help that boy on the other side of the world.Submissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au
