Composer of the MonthWagnerWagner andHis Influence“One of the key figures in the historyof opera,” writes music critic andWagner scholar Barry Millington,“Wagner was largely responsible foraltering its orientation in the 19thcentury…[his work] accelerated thetrend toward organically conceived,through-composed structures, aswell as influencing the developmentof the orchestra, of a new breedof singer, and of various aspectsof theatrical practice.” Millingtonfurther comments: “Even duringWagner’s lifetime, appraisal of hisachievement was clouded by politicaland ideological considerations, professional jealousies, and extramusicalfactors of various kinds. Thus was the pattern set for thenext century and more, for rarely hasa composer excited such extremepassions among cognoscenti andlay listeners alike.” Specifically, inthe decades since World War II:“The association of Wagner’s workswith Hitler and the Third Reich wasto cast a long shadow that had stillnot been completely dissipatedby the end of the 20th century.”Another long shadow, as Millingtonand many others have pointed out,is the influence of Wagner on artistsin all disciplines, but especially thecomposers who followed him in thenext generation, including Mahler,Bruckner, Richard Strauss, Elgar,Schoenberg, and Berg. As we honorWagner as our May Composer of theMonth, we’ll reflect in various waysnot only on the music itself but onthe composer’s controversial legacy.Throughout the month2. In the SpotlightThomas HampsonThe Lyric Opera ofChicago Broadcasts:2012-13 RevisitedListeners in Chicago and around thecountry will experience the 2012-13season at Lyric Opera of Chicagobetween May 18 and July 13. Thebroadcasts begin with Verdi’s SimonBoccanegra. “In the latest revival,”wrote Chicago Tribune critic John VonRhein, “the vocal strengths are welldistributed from top to bottom of acast that includes American baritoneThomas Hampson as Boccanegra, the superb Italian bass FerruccioFurlanetto as his rival, JacopoFiesco, and the exciting Bulgariansoprano Krassimira Stoyanova ashis daughter, Amelia Grimaldi, inher Lyric debut.” Continuing theseason is Massenet’ Werther, starringMatthew Polenzani in the title roleand Sophie Koch as Charlotte. CriticAndrew Patner commented: “Eachof these characters moves throughthis new co-production (first seen inSan Francisco in 2010) by BarcelonabasedFrancisco Negrin as if in aset of interlocking and overlappingdreams….With [Sir Andrew] Davisand the ever-rejuvenating LyricOrchestra providing the musicalsupport and context…this twohours and 45 minutes in the theatrerehabilitates a work that turns out tobe too neglected and maligned.”Boccanegra:Saturday, May 18,1:30 pmWerther:Saturday, May 25,12:00 pm3221. In the SpotlightMember of Time For ThreeMusic in Chicago: TheElgin Symphony andTime for ThreeThe renowned American composerJennifer Higdon wrote her Concerto4-3 especially for the innovativegroup Time for Three, two violins anda double-bass. Says the composer:“Concerto 4-3 is a three-movementwork that uses the language ofclassical music, with dashes ofbluegrass technique, to highlightthe virtuosity and energy of thisinspiring group….Being aware of allof the types of music that they play(bluegrass, rock, Bach, Beatles) gaveme a starting point of inspiration forcreating a piece that would spotlighttheir joy in performing, soulfulmusicality, and prodigious skill….The movement titles refer to imagesfrom the Smoky Mountains whereI grew up in East Tennessee: TheShallows, Little River, and RoaringSmokies.” Elgin’s concert featuringthis concerto, recorded in March, alsocontains Tchaikovsky’s Symphony #5.Friday, May 24,8:00 pm2:00 Wagner Symphony in C –Tokyo Metropolitan Sym/Hiroshi Wakasugi.
