Welcome to the biggest leap inrod component theory since theintroduction of the New Guide Conceptover 15 years ago.2012 marks the beginning of a new era in rod buildingwith Fuji's new ”KR CONCEPT”! It’s made possiblein part because of particular design featuresof Fuji’s K-Series guides and deals primarily withplacement and sizing of all new Micro K-Seriesproducts. New K-Series guides for the KR CON-CEPT are the result of extensive research to answercertain questions posed by the sudden popularityof micro guides.As in the developmentof the NewGuide Concept, Fuji®engineers posed ahypothesis concerningmicro guides andthen set about toprove or disprove thetheory with hard researchprovided byextensive experimentation.Though many hypotheses were tested, the followingpoints were proven in testing and form the coreprincipals of the KR CONCEPT.1) Many of the principals of the New Guide Concepthold true in the development of a new micro-basedconcept. Guide position based on the upsweepangle of a spinning rod is still very important. Runningtrain layout with respect to Static Loading followsNew Guide Concept parameters with onlyminor changes.2) Guide height becomes a critical factor in microguidereduction trains. KR CONCEPT uses newhigh-frame, small-ring K-Series guides to successfullycontrol line through much smaller rings providedthe ring is at a proper height to handle lineflow. This new information is counter to the longstandingidea that spool diameter is the key to determiningring size.3) Smaller ring sizes lead to better line control.Added control aids in moving the line down andnear the blank earlier, effectively moving the chokepoint closer to the reel. Moving the choke point towardthe reel eliminates the need for a forth reductionguide and instead requires an additionalrunning guide. The addition of a single runningguide improves sensitivity, power, recovery andcasting distance since the line is flowing smoothlyalong the blank earlier in the cast. Fuji® has namedthis process “Rapid Choke” and it has a notable impacton rod performance.4) The design of K-Series guides enhancesthe effect of“Rapid Choke” dueto the 30-degreeslope of the frameand ring. Fuji® engineersdo not claimthat the slope makesRapid Choke possible, only that the downward facingring enhances the effect and contributes tooverall performance. Because of this effect, Fuji®has chosen to expand the K-Series product line asthe guide frame of choice for KR CONCEPT layouts.5) Adding a running guide (and sometimes two)moves mid-rod stress from larger reduction guidesto smaller micro guides now positioned in the midsection of the rod. To handle these larger loads,Fuji® has developed the KB guide, a micro guidewith a larger, beveled foot specifically designed tohandle mid-section stress.6) Research by Fuji® indicates a point wheresmaller rings have no additional benefit and can actuallycreate problems. For that reason, Fuji’s smallestguide recommendation for any micro rod is asize 4, with sizes 5 and 5.5 recommended for heavierrods and saltwater applications. THE ANSWER TO MICRO SPINNINGROD LAYOUTSKL-H addresses the issue of high-frame, small-ring guides for micro spinningrod layouts. Until now, the reduction train of micro spinners has always had todeal with the fact that sufficient height on micro rods strippers and reductionguides resulted in large ”standard” sized rings, often negating the performancebenefits of lighter, more sensitive micro layouts. KBKB. THE KEY TO SUCCESSGuide Placement Software (GPS) is now available as aweb app at our website and it’s very easy to get excellentguide placement quickly and easily. Still, the results aredependent on good reel measurements. Please take a momentto review our suggestions and keep this informationnear your bench.STEP 1: Remove the spool from the reel. Draw a straightline all the way across a heavy poster board at the bottomto represent the rod blank. Use picture hanging putty tosecure the footof the reel EX-STEP 1ACTLY on theline representingthe blank(yes, we realizethe reel is upsidedown, butwe are onlylooking formeasurementsand somehowthis seems easierto eyeball).STEP 2: With the reel foot secure and straight on the rodblank line, use a wide ruler and pinch it gently up againstthe spool axle. This is the most important step in theprocess so take your time. Check the ruler and try to makeit perpendicular (90˚) to the surface of the paper. Whenyou are satisfied that the ruler is touching the spool axleall along its edgeand the ruler is90˚ to the paper,scribe a line alongthe bottom edgeof the ruler. Congratulations,youhave just capturedthe angle ofthe spool relativeSTEP 2 to the blank!STEP 3STEP 3: Mark theback edge of thereel. You can actuallyjust eyeballthis measurementsince dropwill always havean identical relationshipto distancefor anyprojected angle.STEP 4: Mark the tip of the spool axle on the spoolaxle line you drew instep 2. You can actuallyjust eyeball thismeasurement sincedrop will always havean identical relationshipto distance forany projected angle.STEP 5: Position the ruler precisely on the spoolangle line drawn in step 2 and project the line pastthe rear reelmark and thespool tip markas shownbelow.STEP 5STEP 4STEP 6: At the point where the projected spool axleline intersects with the “rear of reel” mark, use asquare or 90˚ triangle to draw a line (A) perpendicularto the rod blank line. Do the same (B) for thespool tip mark.Using calipers, measure the length of Lines A, B, &C. A & B are measured from the intersecting pointon the spool axle line to the top edge of the rodblank line.Note these numbers in millimeters and enter themin the boxes in the GPS interface. Label the measurementswith the name of the reel and establish areference file for the future. Choke point and reelupsweep are ALWAYS the same for a particular reel.STEP 663
