Coach Favret and crew will look for the program’s16th championship and sixth ODAC championship, continuingthe tradition of excellence. In the Favret era, Hampden-Sydney is 5-4on opening day, yet is 7-2 in the home openers. The Tigers, however, are currently 0-1 in season openers in Everett Stadium as they fell toJohns Hopkins 17-16 in the inaugural game. Hampden-Sydney willlook to even the score in Everett Stadium season openers with a winon Saturday.THE GUN-SLINGER’S QUESTSenior quarterback Corey Sedlar has emerged as one of the best in thebusiness. Last season, the Richmond, Virginia native threw for 3,601yards which not only led the ODAC but was second in the nation inyards-per-game (360.1). In his two years as the starting play caller,Sedlar has amassed 7,027 and stands just 1,607 yards from beingHampden-Sydney’s all-time leading passer. He is also on the cusp ofanother record - career completions. Former ODAC Offensive Playerof the Year J.D. Ricca currently stands atop the charts with 585, butSedlar is right on his heels with 544 going into his final campaign. Ifthe senior can rack up 3,000 yards this season - he is averaging 3,513.5a year - he will become the first-ever Tiger quarterback to throw for10,000 yards.THE REPLACEMENTSWith the departure of Josh Simpson, the Tigers need to fill the voidof 432 career points, 59 career rushing touchdowns, and 3,278 careeryards. Currently Head Coach Marty Favret has eight running backs onthe roster all trying to patch the hole left by Simpson. The back withthe most experience is sophomore Kirk Rohle, who had 20 carries lastseason while tallying 38 yards and one touchdown. With nearly the entirestarting offensive line and receiving core from a season ago, expectgaps to open up for Rohle and company to account for a solid runninggame. The likely backup for Rohle will be touted freshman Evan King.A 6-4, 205 pound running back, King has the size and speed to surprisesome opposing defenses in his collegiate debut.THE OFFENSIVE PUSHThe 2008 offensive line had a solid season, helping the Tigers accountfor the best total offense in the conference with 470.5 yards per game. The good news for Sedlar and company: nearly that entire offensiveline returns in 2009. They will be anchored by the young, but talented2008 First Team All-ODAC center Ben Rogers. Joining Rogers areseniors Scott Anderson, Peter Caldwell and Henry Skiba, and juniorClay Parker. All five saw significant playing time last season and gaveSedlar ample protection while only allowing 15 sacks on the year.Look for the veteran group to continue their strong play and allow theTiger offense to pick opponents apart.

Last season, the Tigerswere second in the ODAC in rushing defense, allowing just 106.9yards-per-game, and third in total defense, giving up 346.3 ypg. The346.3 ypg allowed was over 50 yards less than 2007, and with nearlythe entire starting lineup returning, Dodson’s group could further improveon those numbers. Nine starters are returning from a year agoincluding First Team All-ODAC linebacker Josh Miller, Second TeamAll-ODAC safety Bill Doody, Honorable Mention All-ODAC linebackerAndrew Sellers, and the ODAC’s leading pass defender MichaelWare. Of the team’s top ten defensive leaders of 2008, eight returnfor the 2009 campaign along with the team’s leading sacker, WillRiggenbach (5.0).MARTY BALLThe Tiger offense, better known as “Marty Ball,” has produced astonishingnumbers over the past few years, including the highest totaloffense in the nation 2005 with 525.2 yards-per-game. That same year, the Tigers were second in the nation in points-per-game averaging 45.0points. In 2003, the Favret-led offense led the nation in points-pergamewith 47.2 per outing, while the 521.4 ypg were good for secondin the country. Over his nine year span, Favret has led his high-octaneoffense to average 431.3 ypg, 34.75 points-per-game and put up atleast 50 points on 17 occasions. Also since 2000, 41 Hampden-Sydneyoffensive records have been broken and four Tigers have been namedthe ODAC Offensive Player of the Year. 2009 should be no differentwith the bulk of the offense returning including key receivers AdamGillette, Anthony Mancini, E.K. Smock, Sean Cavanaugh and KyleVance.BISHOPS PICKED SECOND IN USA SOUTH; #18 IN LINDY’SIn the 2009 USA South Coaches Poll, the Battling Bishops, led bysecond year head coach Mark Henninger, were picked to finish secondin the conference behind 2008 champion Christopher Newport University. The Bishops received one first place vote and 42 total points, while the Captains of Christopher Newport received the other sevenfirst place nods and tallied 49 total points. North Carolina Wesleyanwas also tabbed #18 nationally by Lindy’s 2009 College Football Preview.Last season North Carolina Wesleyan went 6-4 overall and 5-2in the USA South while putting eight players on the All-USA SouthFirst Team. Of those eight, seven return for the 2009 season includingpreseason All-American offensive lineman Anthony Moore. Mooreis joined by a duo of 2008 All-Region defensive selections LeeRonBoykin and Quentin Pope. The offense will again be led by seniorquarterback Bo Jordan along with senior receiver Orlando Webb. Lastseason, Jordan set six passing records while earning First Team All-USA South honors. On the ground, the Bishops will look to the 2006USA South Offensive Rookie of the Year Teron Bush and sophomoreTyreck McFadden.Tiger Game Notes • 5
