At firstshe was very nervous and the robin himself wasindignantly watchful. Even Dickon did not gonear the close-grown corner in those days, butwaited until by the quiet working of some mysteriousspell he seemed to have conveyed to thesoul of the little pair that in the <strong>garden</strong> therewas nothing which was not quite like themselvesnothing which did not understand the wonderfulnessof what was happening to them theimmense, tender, terrible, heart-breaking beautyand solemnity of Eggs. If there had been oneperson in that <strong>garden</strong> who had not known throughall his or her innermost being that if an Egg weretaken away or hurt the whole world would whirlround and crash through space and come to an endifthere had been even one who did not feel it328
