ANSI/<strong>NIST</strong>-ITL 1-<strong>2011</strong> - UPDATE 2013 DRAFT VERSIONThis field is mandatory. The first in<strong>for</strong>mation item is mandatory. This fieldcontains in<strong>for</strong>mation that would not typically be contained in Type-2 recordsbut are very important <strong>for</strong> identification of unknown deceased or personsunable to identify themselves. Here, the term ‘subject’ refers to the person(alive or dead) to whom the in<strong>for</strong>mation applies.• The first in<strong>for</strong>mation item is the subject status code / DSC. It is aninteger with one of the following values:0 Status of individual unknown1 Data obtained from a living person (<strong>for</strong> unknown deceased= antemortem)2 Data obtained from a decedent (<strong>for</strong> unknown deceased =postmortem)Note that separate records shall exist <strong>for</strong> prior and current in<strong>for</strong>mation,which may have the same or different DSC value, depending upon thecircumstances.• The second in<strong>for</strong>mation item, subject – last contact date / DLCD, isan optional in<strong>for</strong>mation item. This is particularly useful in missingpersons cases. See Section 7.7.2.3 <strong>for</strong> the <strong>for</strong>mat.• The third in<strong>for</strong>mation item, subject – range of last contact dateestimate / DRLC is entered in the <strong>for</strong>mat Y yy M mm D dd h hh m mm . Thebold letters are entered with Y indicating years, M indicating months,D indicating days, h indicating hours and m indicating minutes. Not alllevels of time need be entered – only the relevant one(s).• The fourth in<strong>for</strong>mation item, subject – person birth date / DPBD, isan optional in<strong>for</strong>mation item. This is particularly useful in missingpersons cases. See Section 7.7.2.3 <strong>for</strong> the <strong>for</strong>mat.• The fifth in<strong>for</strong>mation item, subject – range of birth date estimate /DRBD is entered in the <strong>for</strong>mat Y yy M mm D dd h hh m mm . The bold lettersare entered with Y indicating years, M indicating months, D indicatingdays, h indicating hours and m indicating minutes. Not all levels oftime need be entered – only the relevant one(s).• The sixth in<strong>for</strong>mation item, subject – person ethnicity text / DPET, isan optional string of 50 Unicode characters used to describe the ethnicgroup to which the subject belongs. This is not selected from a fixedlist, since terminology that is useful in one area may not be relevant inanother. For instance, in certain locations, if tribal membership (e.g.Zulu, Hopi) is known, it may be entered in this in<strong>for</strong>mation item. Inthe United States, ‘Hispanic’ is a common term that may assist inidentification, but that term would be meaningless (or simply cause278
