Anentry of “MARK” shall be used <strong>for</strong> the pattern resulting from needle or trackmarks. For deliberately applied or drawn images, the first in<strong>for</strong>mation itemshall contain “TATTOO” to indicate a common tattoo or indelible imageresulting from the pricking of the skin with a coloring matter;“CHEMICAL” if the image was created by the use of chemicals to burn theimage into the skin; “BRANDED” if the image was burned into the skinusing a branding iron or other <strong>for</strong>m of heat; or “CUT” if the image wascaused by incision of the skin. The value <strong>for</strong> this in<strong>for</strong>mation item is selectedfrom the “<strong>Image</strong> sub-code” column of Table 59.• The second in<strong>for</strong>mation item (tattoo class / TAC) shall be the general classcode of tattoo chosen from the “Class Code” column of Table 68. Thisin<strong>for</strong>mation item does not apply to scars and marks.• The third in<strong>for</strong>mation item (tattoo subclass / TSC) shall be the appropriatesubclass code selected from Table 68. For each general class of tattoo, thereare several defined subclasses. This in<strong>for</strong>mation item does not apply to scarsand marks.• The fourth (optional) in<strong>for</strong>mation item (tattoo description / TDS) shall be atext string that provides additional qualifiers to describe the image or portionof the image. For example, to fully describe a tattoo, there may be a classdescription of “ANIMAL”, with a subclass description of “DOG”, andqualified by “golden retriever with an overbite”. This in<strong>for</strong>mation item doesnot apply to scars and marks.An SMT image consisting of several parts or sub-images shall use subfields to fullydescribe the various parts or features found in the total image. The first subfield shalldescribe the most predominant feature or sub-image contained in the SMT image.Subsequent repeating subfields shall describe additional portions of the image that are notpart of the main or central focal point of the image.
