ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011 - UPDATE 2013 DRAFT VERSION• Acquisition related – “scanning resolution”, “native scanning resolution”• Image related – “nominal resolution”, “transmitting resolution”• Either acquisition or image related – “class resolution”, “tolerance”Most of the complexity related to resolution pertains to the friction ridge (particularlyfingerprints) as described in the following subclauses.7.7.6.1 Fingerprint resolution requirementFor Appendix F 32 certified devices, resolution accuracy shall not vary more than 1% fromthe class resolution. A class resolution of 19.69 ppmm (500 ppi) has a lower bound of 19.49ppmm (495ppi) and an upper bound of 19.89 ppmm (505ppi). See Table 14. For PersonalIdentity Verification (PIV) 33 certified devices with fingerprint subject application profile(FAP) 34 Levels 10 to 40 only (see Section 7.7.5.2), resolution accuracy shall not vary morethan 2% from the class resolution (see Table 14). For example, a class resolution of 19.69ppmm (500 ppi) has a lower bound of 19.30 ppmm (490ppi) and an upper bound of 20.08ppmm (510ppi). The 2% tolerance for class resolution applies only to verification /authentication applications – not to identification applications. FAP 10 is a minimumrequirement and any FAP level below 10 is not covered by this standard. See Table 12 fora description of the FAP levels.Table 14 Class resolution with defined toleranceClass ResolutionCertification Maximum Tolerance 500 1000Appendix F ±1% ±5 ppi ±10 ppiPIV (FAP Level 10 or above) ±2% ±10 ppi Not ApplicableTolerance requirements shall apply to the class and nominal resolution requirementsthroughout this standard.7.7.6.2 Friction ridge scanner resolution requirementThe following clauses address the scanner or acquisition process requirements for frictionridge acquisition devices.7.7.6.2.1 Exemplar scanner resolution requirementExemplar images shall have a minimum scanning resolution of the 500 ppi class. If Type-4records are included in the transaction, Field 1.011 Native scanning resolution / NSRcontains five characters specifying the native scanning resolution in pixels per millimeter. Itis expressed as two numeric characters followed by a decimal point and two more numericcharacters (e.g. 19.69). This field is set to “00.00” if no Type-4 records are present in the32IAFIS-DOC-01078-9.1 Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Electronic Biometric TransmissionSpecification (EBTS) May 25, 2010 – Appendix F - CJIS Image Quality Specifications33Personal Identity Verification (PIV): Image Quality Specifications For Single Finger Capture Devices.34NIST Special Publication 500-280, Mobile ID Device Best Practice Recommendation Version 1.0May, 2013 DRAFT VERSION UPDATE 2013 Page 79
