16 Fundamentalsmeasure them, application of this knowledge to system design cannot proceed without themore detailed examination of the various aspects, as outlined in the chapters whichfollow. This brief reÂsume of the fundamentals may thus be best summarised by referenceto Tables 1.8 and 1.9 which provide, respectively, proposed values of dry resultanttemperature (t res ) for most common applications and outdoor air supply rates for sedentaryoccupation. The temperatures proposed are for the basis of design and relate to normal clothing forthe listed enclosures. Summer temperatures apply to air conditioned or comfort cooledapplications; higher temperatures may be acceptable where such conditioning is notprovided. For naturally ventilated spaces, typically, a dry resultant temperature of25 C may be acceptable if this is not exceeded for more than about 5% of the occupiedperiod. In a year-round controlled environment, there is no merit for normal comfortapplications in controlling temperatures within close tolerances.
