53Lesson HIObjective:• Students will be able to define all musical terms in Dies Natalis for Band.Standards:• Reading and notating music.• Evaluating music and music performances.While students are developing their kinesthetic playing knowledge, it is important thatthey also learn the musical terminology within their repertoire for informed performanceand interpretation. This information may be presented to students as (1) a lecturediscussion,(2) individual homework, or (3) in-class small group work. In-class smallgroup work is recommended because it is more effective for student learning. Most of theterms may be found in music dictionaries, but some of the less common terms may needItalian translation. If students work individually or in groups to define the terms, theteacher should review the material to make sure students have the correct definitions.Additionally, the relevance of musical terms should be reinforced through use inrehearsal.
