NEW PRODUCT BULLETINIntegrated Amplifier• High performance amplifier that takes full advantage of the sound qualitybenefits of balanced amplification• Floating Balanced Power Amplifier• Triple parallel electronic volume and tone controlsHiFi Began with YamahaYamaha’s involvement with and passion for music goes back more than a century, to when we built our first reed organ in1887. Now we are the world’s leading producer of pianos and other musical instruments, and are involved with music inmany other ways as well. We manufacture professional recording equipment, we design concert halls and we assist artists atconcerts with set up and sound tuning. This knowledge and experience benefits our production of audio components inmany ways. We introduced our first HiFi (High Fidelity) turntable in 1954, becoming the first company to actually use theterm “HiFi.” Thereafter we were one of the first to offer mass-produced, high quality audio equipment, and introducedmany legendary stereo components. We hope you enjoy the genuine HiFi experience of Yamaha Natural Sound.1/4

NEW PRODUCT BULLETINIntegrated AmplifierThe brilliantly expressive capabilities of Yamaha’s floating and balanced design— now available to a wider range of music lovers.Yamaha’s All-New Approach toAchieving Superior PerformanceThe development of the modern audio amplifierbegan in the 1960s with the introduction offull-transistor amplifiers. In the 1970s, purecomplementary configured power ampsappeared, made possible by high output PNP-NPN transistors, and became the dominant typeof analogue amplifier. Now digital amps havebecome popular for their high conversionefficiency and superior operating precision, aswell as for their lower weight, size and heatproduction as compared to analogue amps. Some manufacturers of audiophile-quality ampsare working to improve the traditional purecomplementary analogue amplifier, while othersare seeking to achieve higher sound qualityfrom digital amplifiers. But Yamaha has developed a third approachthat we believe is superior to the other two. TheFloating Balanced Power Amplifier usespatented technologies featuring powertransistors with the same polarity at the outputstage to achieve completely symmetricaloperation.First introduced in the A-S2000, thismethod is also used to good effect in theA-S1000, which combines a floating balancedpower amp section with a high quality preampsection. Simpler in configuration yet with manyof the same sound quality features as the ultrahigh-end A-S2000, it will deliver excellentperformance with the CD-S1000 Super AudioCD Player and other high quality components.High Performance Amplifier thatBrings Out the Best of OtherComponentsThe power amp, power supply, and phono EQcircuits that contribute to the A-S1000’s highsound quality are identical to those of theA-S2000, while the line amp section andvolume and tone circuits are nearly the same.Designed to take full advantage of the excellentsonic qualities of the matching CD-S1000, theA-S1000 will also bring out the best of otherhigh performance components.Floating Balanced Power AmplifierWith the A-S2000 and now the A-S1000,Yamaha has taken the bold step of using afloating balanced configuration to update thepower amplifier for serious music fans. Thismethod, which is completely different from thepure complementary circuit that has been themain type used for the past four decades, features identical polarity on the plus and minusside of the output stage. By completely isolatingthe plus and minus sides of the left and rightchannels of both the NFB and power supplies, itachieves perfectly symmetrical operation in theoutput stage. The use of four sets of floatingpower supply units (not connected to earth),provides further operating precision. The resultis very low levels of noise and distortion forexceptionally pure and transparent soundquality.Conventional Power AmplifierPower amp and signal input and output are connected to ground+BNoiseGround wiringFeed backNoise enters power amp through groundSpeakerA-S1000 Floating Balanced Power AmpFloating power supplyFeedbackSymmetrical+ –SpeakerFeedbackS Signal + S Signal –Ground wiringPower SupplyGroundwiringPower Supply–BFloating power supply2/4

NEW PRODUCT BULLETINIntegrated AmplifierTriple Parallel Electronic Volumeand Tone ControlsConventional audio amps have the volumeand tone control circuits arranged in series(in line); when the tone controls are used, thesignal route becomes more complicated, which can lower sound quality. Many highquality amps therefore have a default circuitthat can be selected to bypass the tonecontrols, but this forces you to choosebetween tone control and optimum quality. The A-S2000 and A-S1000 are the firstamplifiers to avoid this problem by employingtriple parallel electronic volume and tonecontrols, providing maximum sound qualityeven when the tone controls are used (signalgoes through fewer ICs, so there is lessnoise). When the tone controls are set to thecenter position, the passive element used fortone control is bypassed, so the three volumeelements connected in parallel operate solelyto drive and control the volume, for moreefficient use of the power output. Eachvolume element is an ultra-high qualitydevice and an analogue potentiometer isused to provide a very smooth operating feel.Fully Discrete Phono Equaliserand MC Head AmpCompletely symmetrical left-right construction.MC Head Amp and Equaliser Amp Block DiagramLch InMMMC++MC Head AmpRelay for SelectingMC Head Amp++MMMC+EQ Amp+Large heat sink, huge powertransformer, custom-made blockcapacitors (18,000µF) and preampboard.++MC Head Amp +BEQ Amp +BPhono OutThe A-S1000 uses a fully discrete phonoequaliser circuit, whose quality is comparableto those in high-end control amps. If you enjoylistening to records via high performancecartridges, the A-S1000 is an ideal choice.Power SupplyPower is provided by four large capacitypower supplies that are completely isolatedfrom earth. In the preamp stage, thecombination of a low-current circuit thatprevents the occurrence of noise due tocurrent fluctuation and 12 shunt regulatorssupply all stages with clean and stable power. The extra-large power transformer, thecarbon sheath block capacitors and otherparts that directly affect sound quality werechosen only after extensive testing.Symmetrical ConstructionAlthough it is an integrated amplifier, theA-S1000 has a completely left-rightsymmetrical construction that makes itvirtually the equal of separate amps.A central reinforcing bar ensures that thechassis is totally rigid.Specially Designed FeetThe base is equipped with height adjustable, solid steel feet that maximise stability andthoroughly dampen any external vibration.3/4
